ps90 mags ?

Post by reads » 09 May 2009, 16:36

Is there any company other than f.n., producing mags, for the ps90?

I'm weary of aftermarket or will-fit replacement parts and accessories. I have had bad luck particularly with magazines. My local shop has PS-90 mags in stock for $84.99 and they are in poly bags, not the usual blue and white boxes. I should have checked the maker's mark to see if they were American Tactical.

My guess is these AT mags are being manufactured under a license agreement from FNH.

I think any patent on the mags would have ran out by now. Plus they are made overseas, and we all know how much they care about patent rights there.

Just ask Mark Larue how he feels about them. :lmao:

I would have assumed the patents would be expired, but I remember corresponding with Mag Parts about the unrealized 100 round mag they hinted about. He noted that there were design patents still in effect. I haven't researched it so I don't know if that is true or not.

You are right about the casual attitude toward patent rights with many overseas mfgs.

New PS90 Magazines (From Tactical Innovations)

Post by moreland281 » 10 May 2009, 10:37

Has anyone tried these?
I noticed they only run $30-$35 and if they work that is not a bad deal (still looking for a PS90, but might as well get the mags while I can as well)

I have bought a LOT of guns and accessories from Gordon Miller, and trust his opinion greatly.
If he says they are quality and identical to FN mags, I would say go ahead and try one.
I have 10 mags for my ps90 but just got an AR57 upper, so I might grab a few of these. I like to have 10 mags per weapon if possible, but with mag prices lately that hasnt been possible. If these work that would be great. I would love to see more quality after market mags being produced. I own a lot of HK's and those mags are sickly expensive right now and the only alternative (Promag) sucks!!

If anyone tries these please post your results!

I'm waiting for someone to post results as well. Colt223, HK mags are on the high side, I agree. Luckily I have quite a few with each gone other other than the mk23 and I only have 5 :cya:

I'm curious to hear of the results of these magazines. Now if someone would develop magazines for the FNAR...

I finally got someone on the phone at AT and here's the bad news they are only a wholesale company which will only sale to retailer's no individual. Also after talking to them about getting a buddy of mine that's an FFL to purchase these and sell them the suggested MSRP is 55.99. So why not spend the extra 10 dollars and get the FN name. But in my searches I did find this.

http://www.militarygunsupply.com/shop2/ ... cts_id=777" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I found it on ar15.com/forums they where promoted mainly for the ar57 but they also fit in ps-90 so I ordered two :p Hopefully they work.

Good tip Shaokhano, $29.95 is a good price if they work... but man seems everyone is using shipping to make up margin.. $15.02 to NC. Total $44.97 Will let you know how they work out...

Product description:
Brand new 5.7x28mm 50rd Magazines branded with the AR-57 Logo. Don't waste your time with others, these are the only aftermarket magazines guaranteed to work the the AR-57 upper. Will also work with the FN PS90

Copes also had them, and I think I remember them saying they were manufactured in Korea. They were 39.99 or something close with a fixed 7.95 shipping regardless how much you ordered. They don't have them listed now, and have FN 50 rounders for $64.99.

Military Gun Supply is on back order right now. When I tried to order from AT they told me they only sell to retailer's, and the gun shop I usually go to said that when he talked to the MSRP on the mags are 54.99. So we both agreed I could just spend the extra 10 bucks and get the FN name.

YES !

Just received my PS 90 Mags from AR Five & seven. I like it but , Price is right !!!!! Materials used to make the mag somewhat concerning, FNH mags are glass polymer and have a good feel for reliability and dropping it by accident.

AR five & seven the plastic used is the same as a replacement mag from Sig for the Mosquito and are questionable when it comes to the drop factor.

Would I buy another Mag from AR five & seven for my PS 90 ? Absolutely !!!! It saves me tearing up my good FNH mags and I can still enjoy shooting keeping in mind not to drop it with rounds in the mag....And at $29.00 bucks you can't go wrong..

My mag is the Solid Black, what AR five & seven did was left the raised lines traveling down the length of the mag clear so you have an idea on the number of rounds left. Good job AR.

I do wish they can beef them up a little and keep the price reasonable. I'd be buying all my mags from them at that point.

Anyone have any experience with dropping a fully loaded AR five & seven mag?

Stay safe

Received my two AR57 mags the other day, too. Like Shooter said, they don't appear quite as h/d as the FN factory mags but you can't complain at all for the price. My factory mags are similar in color and at first glance the AR57 mags could be passed off as FNs except for the logo on the bottom. I'll report back after I run them through a few times at the range and let you guys know if there are any problems. If they're gtg I'll be buying only these from now on.

I got an advertisement in the mail yesterday from a well known vendor and it looks like they are selling these same mags for $75.

I am tossing my aftermarket Mags out in the trash. I purchased 3, which were packaged in blue and black boxes that resembled FNH boxes, and found that they need to be filed to fit, and the 3 mags damaged a number of rounds due to faulty loading and or jammimg. I will from now on, only purchase Factory FNH mags. If anyone wants this junk, just let me know. Also, get this, once i had fired 50 rounds through each one, I went to reload them, and found that the internal spring had almost ZERO resistance for the first 2 or 3 rounds. Absoloute garbage in my opinion.

They are American Tactical. I hope this helps. They are identical in color, however, the 2 "Teeth" that are at the dispnsing end of the mag, are too thick to seat onto the upper. Once filed, they will fit with some effort, but if you get it seated, it will misfeed a number of rounds per 50. I actually had 1 round, that pushed the projectile into the unfired case. This could have been a very cataclismic event. I had at least 4-5 out of each 50 that would misfeed and "Bend" the projectile at about a 20 degree angle to the case.

I hope this helps.

Not sure what's going on over at Midway USA but their FNH PS-90 factory mags are going for $32.99.... just the other day they were going for $65-ish.

Maybe FNH realized how much business they were going to lose with the after market mags coming in at half the price so they dropped their price.

At this point, the 50 rd mags are cheaper than the 5.7 20 rd'ers... atleast at Midway.

Hopefully one of the forum sponsors just buys em all so they can make a margin and still provide us with a more sustained supply of cheap mags.

1 of 2 things will happen with this midway deal. You will receive the knockoff mags, or they will pull the pricing asap.

That would be false advertising if they ship the knockoffs. they have the AR57 mags listed already, and they list these with FN part #s, as factory originals. I ordered 3, guess I'll see what they look like when they get here.

Watch yourself. There are alot of knockoffs out there suddenly and they are not made as well as FNs.

The good news in all this mess is that FN is lowering their prices on their mags to compete now that the patents have apparently run out. We have over 200 for sale right now for $27.18 each plus shipping on our website.

To counter this, I've got some bad news. I was talking with one of the Federal Distributers. Expect cost of ammo to start creeping up. I've already seen this with the SS195 costing $23 a box now on our website. Federal did the same thing when they took over manufacturing of the .357 sig about 10 years ago. Don't be suprised if we see factory ammo hovering around the $30 a box price within the year. I hope I'm just being pessimistic....

I still have yet to buy any ss197 that is loaded by federal.. I wonder how much foichi(sp) loaded rounds are still out there? That would be a $12 increase over current prices. Not sure I could see that happening, but who knows. I take it if it becomes $30 a box the cheapest, Gander Mountain will want $100 a box...

I just built an AR57 and it came with one of the ATI 50 round mags. I had to file off a lip on the breech end of the mag to get it to fit and release. After 100 rounds, it now hangs up if I load more than three rounds into it. I've just ordered one from 57 Center so I hope that will be better.

Can these magazines be taken apart?

Thanks

you can take the follower and rollers and spring out of them if you remove the floorplate.

I'm new to the whole P90/AR57 concept. I'm assuming that the floorplate is the end of the magazine that latches into the front of the gun. I've been looking at that but can't figure ouut how to get it off. It slides a little side to side but that's about it. Any detailed instructions would be a great help.

At the back end of the magazine is a little button. Push in that little button and slide off the "plate" on the ass end of the magazine. This will let the rest follow.

Just drop both the rollers in first -- think of them as sort of fake rounds. Then, insert the follower. The part of the follower that the spring wraps around will be towards the top of the magazine (the part that has the round count numbers). The rest should be gravy.

Thanks, again!

The trouble is that when the 4th round goes in, the foirst inserted round looks like it gets a little sideways and then there is no more tension in the magazine. It sticks the follower. The three other rounds then just fall out of the mag. To get the 4th (the first loaded) out, I have to stick a screwdriver in there and move the round around until it pops free.

The thing is, when I first got the upper, I loaded about 20 into the mag with no trouble. It was only after the range sesion that I noticed this. At the range, they only allow 3 rounds in a rifle so I would not have noticed a 4th round glitch.

Ever seen this?

Thanks again.

Well I just bought 10 50 rounders from Botach for $161 shipped.
OK, I know, I know,,,, Botac/Botach I've heard all the horror stories.
Out of all the stuff I've bought form them, I've only had one problem.
Sometimes they're slow but so far they've been solid.
Anyhow, these are the "Victory" (Great Korena name, huh?) mags.

Just thought I'd pass this along. Be my luck somebody's bought these and they are crap. LOL

BTW, I've heard that ss197's work on in some of the after market mags but other rounds not so well.

I'll post how they work on 190,192,195,197 and 198 after I get the mags.

I just received the 50 rd mag from 57 Center. Dropped right in; easier to get on and off; all rounds load right up. This is the all-black magazine and it was $44 shipped. Seems perfect and I'll have it out for some work this weekend.

I just took a chance and got 6 of these:

http://palmettostatearmory.com/423.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am hoping they are not garbage. I didnt see anyone mention this site or its prices. If you look at the description then it eludes to the fact they are ar57 manufactured. I will recieve them in like 8 days from now.

Holy old thread batman.

Mag in the link above look neato.

I would still rather have FN mags just for piece of mind. To many bad experiences trying to find el cheapo mags for my mini14.... :wall:

Any "quality" and/or "range" reports to share yet?

I just bought 4 "genuine FSN" 50-rounders off of Gunbroker, but those do look interesting.

Are those slots actually "open to air" (and rain/mud) as they appear to be in the photo below?

The magazines are ar57 manufactured and are windowed. I dont have much info on them because I am having chambering issues with my rifle at the moment. See here: http://fivesevenforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=9379" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

AR57 is sending me some new parts. My upper was serial number below 25. I was shooting the rifle at 15 degrees in the snow, it fed each time but had chambering issues. Only 20 rounds tested before i gave up due to the chambering issue (not related to the magazine).

Sorry but i do not have more info on the magazine quality at this time.

We had them and at first we thought the would be great. Non of them made it past 2k before the feed lip section self destructed. No issues with our FN mags and they have well over 10k through them.

FN mags are the best choice. I have only one made in Korea one, and it went in the trash long ago.

I concur with Jay and Justin; I would definitely not count on a KOREAN magazine; I greatly dislike these made in Korea. A few matches ago I watched a glock Korean magazine shatter its contents everywhere. I honestly they have enough experience or testing to even compare with quality USA or Austrian magazines.

Stay away from the Korean generic knockoffs.

I don't know who jay or Justin are but I can assume you mean two people on this forum. That said are you guys eluding to the ar57 mags as being Korean made?

with the price of current FN 50 round magazines it makes really no sense to me to purchase aftermarket for a few dollars less unless they were proven to be just as good. I'd use them for the range, but that'd be about it.

If they cost you anything it's a "bad deal". I only had several because they were free. They just plain suck.

Botach has Korean Clones for $9.95 + free shipping. Required a little TLC with a fine file to get them to snap in and out like the factory FN - BUT for $9.95 - load fine - feed fine. My only problen with my AR57 is it goes thru ammo like a woman with money at a shoe sale

I've got 10 genuine FN mags I'm willing to sell. But being a new/junior member who's paid membership hasn't come through as of today it appears I'm not being allowed to discuss selling things yet. But anyone interested can try sending me a pm.
