HS6 or Longshot?

Post by kmiles » 26 Jan 2016, 16:24

I have been reloading for quite a while for the FsN using True Blue. I recently started loading for the PS90 and have found that True Blue does not work too well. Am using mostly the 40 gr. vmax to start with since I have a load that works well in the FsN (5.8 gr of true blue and a CCI 400 primer). I backed down to 5.3 gr based on some older postings here (mostly ifire's older threads), and worked up. I loaded 20 of each load going up .1 gr at a time up to 5.8. All of the loads worked, but everything above 5.5 seemed to be inconsistent in the feel and sound. Was at the indoor range, so could not use the chrono.

Looking through some of the older threads, it seems that people had ok results with both HS6 and Longshot. The local shop here has both in stock, so my question is for those loading for a stock PS90, what are you using? Not really looking for load info as that is covered in the older ifire threads (I am pretty sure he was using a 16" barrel, but not sure), but looking for input from people who have used one or both of those powders. Would like to eventually load some of the controlled chaos rounds for SD, but want to find a powder that works well before using the more expensive bullets.

I cannot speak much on HS6 but I do use Longshot alot in both my FSN and my 12"AR57. Also I load the controlled chaos for both platforms with Longshot.

I have loaded HS6. I didn't have issues with it other than my brass and chamber being a little dirty after firing, mostly due to light plinking loads. Sorry, I do not have velocity data. I used up what I had in HS6 on 9mm and didn't buy anymore. I personally am going with Long Shot now, as it is a great powder for 10mm and my LGS has a ton of it, so I can use for 5.7 also and have a few pounds of True Blue dedicated to 5.7. I sold my PS90 and one of my FsN's, so not going through 5.7x28 like I was and therefore not reloading it as much. I cannot keep up with 9mm since my wife got her HK.

I was able to pick up a pound of each over the weekend. Was glad to see both powders are large enough to go through my chargemaster without an issue. Have about 400 brass prepared and primed, so going to do some loading this week to test next weekend with the chrono.

The one thing that surprised me is that both Longshot and HS6 both appear on the speed charts to be faster burning than TrueBlue. I figured the issue with TrueBlue working well in the FsN but not the PS90 was that it was too fast for the longer barrel. Longshot appears close to Trueblue, but HS6 seems to be further up the speed list. Will start at the low end of loads listed elsewhere, and work up .1 at a time to see what happens. Going to load at least 10 at each charge level so that I should get good stats at each level to compare. Not sure I will get much for accuracy information as the place I can use my chrono does not have any benches, so I will have to be off hand in the standing position. Once I get some decent loads speed wise, I can fine tune it for accuracy at the range with the benches.

That is why I come to the forum. Even though the info is older, it at least gives me an idea about what powders other people have had success with. The burn charts I looked at were the ones at the front of the reloading manuals. They did not do anything but list the powders in order from fastest to slowest, but did not give any details. The 3 charts were all pretty similar, but there were some differences. Just use them to get an idea of where things fall. If I did not have the forum, I would have probably tried H110 because I use it in my .30 carbine with good results. Similar barrel length, and similar case size, but from info here I am not even going to bother trying the H110. Not sure who would have ever thought of trying longshot since it is listed as a shot shell powder. Other people seem to be using it with at least a bit of success, so I figured I would give it a shot.

I have switched from blue dot to full on long shot. Can do subsonics with it and supersonics. Someone was intrumental in this conversion ;)

I have only tried Longshot for my PS90 10" barrel. It worked very well for my firearm, as I got pretty consistent velocity reading from my chrono shooting the 40VMax bullets. I went with Longshot because out of all the info I could find on the web and this forum, it seems Longshot was a power that worked better than most others at working with both the FSN and PS90 (I dont have the FSN but might one day). Most other powders only work with 1 or the other. I would assume it will work great for the 16" barrel as well, just slightly lower powder loading than my 10" recipe most likely.

I do have to admit that my development of this round is very limited. I only did enough work to find a round that gave me consistent near max velocities and wrote the recipe down in my logbook for future mass production on a rainy day.

Have been able to do a first round of testing of Longshot and HS6.

Longshot
3rd time for this brass being fired
trimmed to 1.130
CCI 400 primer
40 grain vmax

5.4 grains - 2231 fps, SD 51
5.5 grains - 2277 fps, SD 15
5.6 grains - 2279 fps, SD 14
5.7 grains - 2345 fps, SD 36
5.8 grains - 2364 fps, SD 28 Primers were slightly flattened, but not at max.

Sample size was 10 for all loads, although on several occasions only 9 registered. Function was 100% as expected for all loads. Noticed that the brass was pretty dirty at all load levels with longshot. Performance was pretty close to the testing done by ifire 4 years ago, so will likely not push the ladder any further.

HS6
3rd time being fired for this brass
trimmed to 1.130
CCI 400 Primer
40 gr. vmax

6.4 grains - 2329, SD 47
6.5 grains - 2296, SD 87 (had 5 rounds that did not register on the chrono on this string for some reason)
6.6 grains - 2358, SD 43
6.7 grains - 2400, SD 39
6.8 grains - 2402, SD 40 (only 7 of 10 rounds registered, think the bright sun might have been throwing the chrono off)

Sample size was 10 rounds for each load. All functioned 100% as expected. Did not notice the primers flattening as much as with the Longshot, so think there is room to go a bit higher using HS6. Overall the velocity with HS6 was better than longshot, but the SD's were a lot higher. The HS6 did seem to be a bit cleaner burning as the cases were not as dirty as they were with Longshot.

My recent load data with W540 (HS-6) and the 42gr sinterfires went fine until a .1gr increase jumped my ES into the mid 200s, and that was just as I was approaching 197 velocities. Past experiments with loudshot didn't produce any odd results, seemed to work well, but was mad loud. Like 30-06 loud. Not terrible outside, but it surprised me. Probably stick with 9 and 40 for the W540 and if the two are your options, loudshot would be the better choice.

Best prices I see around Denver are at Sportsmans Warehouse. Buy a lot, and Powder Valley is mad cheap, but you gotta get enough to make up for the hazmat.

I have a few of them not too far from me. Definitely will take the better half of a day traveling. I will call first. :-)

My local shot carries it at a decent price, but they do not ship.

Just a side note to this ancient post. Kmiles observation that his loads were not registering on his chrono is likely due to muzzle flash. I have experienced the same phenomenon loading the 5.7 with slower powders, in my case 2400. I always check the chrono with some "control loads" in 5.7 before new load testing.
