Black Bear Hunting

Post by NWmissouriman » 30 Aug 2014, 07:08

There was a thread on this a while back (09 I think), but it's locked so I started a new one. I'm going bear hunting tomorrow for black bear and I'll be packing my FsN and my Super Redhawk. I'm taking the FsN in case a wolf jumps out, but I'd really like to shoot a bear with it since I've already shot one with my .44. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyways to see if any opinions have changed.....would you guys shoot a black bear (200-400lbs) with your FsN? Available ammo choices are Protector II, 198, and 197. Thoughts :ponder: ?

it better be a small bear under 250lbs. A wise choice would be protector then 198.

Uh, ... no! .44 good. Remember, you want to kill him cleanly. A wounded bear is a VERY angry bear.

I'm gonna say if your not gonna stuff or mount the head an SS198 to the head should work if your close enough. Not gonna be me to test that theory though. :ponder:

Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess I'll probably stick to the .44 unless a wolf jumps out.

it should take a wolf no problem. I have shot a few coyotes with ss197 with great results even though wolves are about 2 to 3 sizes bigger, at least up here in north idaho I am confident it would take a wolf fairly easy but shot placement is key!!!

I think a 5.7x28mm round would get the bear's attention & possibly make it mad, but not be of any real defense value.
I carried my 10mm this weekend, I debated between that & my Super Blackhawk.
I went with the 10mm just because it's quicker to reload if 8 rounds aren't enough.

Then again...
I am going to be shooting a bear with a bow & arrow next season (hopefully) so what do I know?

IMHO, Always carry a back-up weapon when hunting creatures with large fangs and claws with a bow. Even when hunting white tail deer, there was a concealed handgun inside my jacket (legal with a CC permit in the areas I hunted). Of course, it was there to ward off two-legged predators.
