I'd say start with the things that don't require reloading or are re-usable... compound bow/cross bow/machette; then work towards things which are readily available and common. .22lr/9mm/.45acp/5.56/.38spl/12ga

Re: What is your SHTF Pistol/Long Gun Combo?
5.7 pistol w/ 30 rd mags and a 12" AR57 w/ 50 rd mag upper on my sbr lower w/suppressor. I can carry alot of mags for both guns very easily.
Re: What is your SHTF Pistol/Long Gun Combo?
Full length AR57 equipped with a cheap BSA 1x Red Dot (this way I don't cry when I end up breaking it  ), vertical foregrip & spare battery in the pistol grip and FsN w/ 30rd mag. Ammo isn't a concern for me since I've got enough components to last a lifetime. I also like the idea of interchangeable ammunition... Only problem is I have to load the AR57 ammo a couple 1/10gr below the pistol max so the mags don't pop out (so far I've been too timid to add weight to the bolt or mess with the springs). This is typically ~8.2gr of HS7 w/ a 27gr SS195 bullet. The high velocity and good BC on the SS195 bullet allows it to reach out and touch those zombies at longer distances w/ the rifle. Do you guys think a doubler would be helpful for longer shots or does the corresponding increased MOA of the dot make that impractical? Maybe I'd be better off investing in some flip up iron sights since I cant count on having batteries forever...then again I plan on getting some nice solar panels, so theoretically I could recharge them as much as I need to. :ponder: Hard to beat a red dot in low-light, and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to leave both eyes open when sweeping rooms....
My only qualm about my AR57 is that its freakin' 9.5lbs w/ loaded mag! Any suggestions for lightening it up short of going through the whole SBR process? I've got a plumcrazy lower which is probably at least a pound or two lighter that I could swap, but I tend to hear a lot of negative feedback about that brand. Damn if it doesnt have a kicka$$ factory trigger though! Worth it?

Use the Plum Crazy and ditch all the tacticrap you can. A good fixed stock can be a lot lighter than a collapsible or folding one (Ace comes to mind). Good Iron sights that co-witness w/your red dot is a good way to go. Again, fixed are usually lighter than flips

Re: What is your SHTF Pistol/Long Gun Combo?
I guess I think differently than a lot of folks.
I like my 30.30. It's short, light and lethal as hell. It's great for dropping large game and shoots further than I can see. For closer up and smaller game, I use a .22LR. Plus its easier to make quiet.
For handguns, it's 9MM (Rugers, what else?) and .45 (1911) and an LCP pocket pistol. All common calibers.
Common machette and survival knife and a couple of locking folders take care of my blade needs.

Your thinking is sound: why shoot futher than you can see? A lever 30.30 is indeed rugged. Having anything in .22 is smart too.
Re: What is your SHTF Pistol/Long Gun Combo?
I've got an a$$load of .22 ammo and nothing to shoot it in  Guess I'll be using that for currency :ponder:

22 is nice because it's so quiet ... shh ... what was that? A gunshot? No! A twig snapping! Yet you get game with it (and injury/incapacitate humans)!
SCAR 17S is nice, too, because it folds up easy and .308 can put a hurtin on humans and all sorts of game.
And we all already know the Five-seveN is a must

I'm trying to figure out why you shot the poor fella.. was it because he is a Tactifag or that he simply walked past you? (Note to self: avoid Jay's house during TEOTWAWKI)panzermk2 wrote:LOL imagine this mental pic,

12" Gen 2 Complete Upper AR57 Assembly and Aimpoint T-1 and Larue QD mount mounted on Spikes AR pistol lower weighs in at 6 lbs sans magazine and sling.Grantness wrote:My only qualm about my AR57 is that its freakin' 9.5lbs w/ loaded mag!
Currently the AR57 short barrel pistol and the FsN is my favored combo out to 30-50 yards after which I'm reaching for my Daniel Defense M4 or JP CTR-02.

It changes.
Currently FsN, P90 and VLTOR with a bull barrel for reach out time. Although I do have an M4 and Sigpro by my nightstand also.

Jay,
Is the VLTOR an AR-type rifle? 5.56 or 7.62?

When I was fishing in Alaska this summer, where the large brown bears live, my SHTF pistol/long gun combo turned out to be a S&W Mountain Gun .44 Magnum with Garrett Hammerheads and a Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun with Garrett Hammerheads.
My tacti-cool weapons would have failed in that environment. :-)

Blue, your post is in mho is the best answer on this thread. I have wide variety on of guns to choose from. But without skill and wisdom no combo will truly suffice. With skill and wisdom (which I endeavor to increase daily) my Ruger 22/45 & 10/22 or my CZ 52 & Mosin Nagant M44 could be the best combo. I'm not saying that either of those combos would be among my top choices, just that without the needed skill & wisdom, no combo will do you much good.blueorison wrote:My combination is something money cannot buy.

Re: What is your SHTF Pistol/Long Gun Combo?
I have a very tacticool Heckler and Koch MP5SD .22lr. There are lighter 22lr semiauto rifles but it's what I've got, and it's pretty easy to maintain an inventory of a few thousand rounds (when I get down to 2000 rounds I start buying more). It's the firearm that I've put the most rounds through and that I feel comfortable putting a shot or ten dead on target anytime anywhere.
Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but every time I start thinking about buying a 5.56 or 7.62, I can't justify it with a SHFT scenario. My FsN should serve just fine in any actual anti-personnel scenario; since zombies are medically impossible, I don't see how I'd need the ability to kill large numbers of people from long distances. A good deer rifle may make sense however...unless I happened to come across a cow in a post-apocalytic world without grocery stores, in which case a couple .22 rounds to the head will be sufficient to put steak on the dinner table.

Zombies may be medically impossible but what about reavers?
FYI - There are more SHFT scenarios than just the zombie apocalypse such as an economic (or just welfare) collapse or an EMP to name a couple.
Personally, my money is on the economic collapse (no pun intended). I'm sure we'd get depression era suicides but these days, I would also expect a lot of people thinking they have a right to what you have.
I already see that mentality every time some n00b wants to go shooting with me. I mention I am going shooting, they say they want to go, I ask if they have ammo or money to buy some, they say "Can't I just use yours?"
"It wasn't free."
"Yeah but... You already have it."

Re: What is your SHTF Pistol/Long Gun Combo?
good point - I prefer to shoot alone. I do get a fair number of friends who want to tag along to the range to get some trigger time on my firearms. That I don't mind, but I've never heard an offer for someone to pay for or provide their own ammo. Which is odd because it's the first thing I provided when I've tried out friends' firearms.
anyways, for all the caliber machismo that's part of gun enthusiasts, the .22lr is a must have (and many agree with this). 5000 rounds goes a long way in any SHFT scenario
