Zombie Shoot

Post by Rapier1772 » 17 Oct 2013, 10:15

The ISU shooting club wants to hold a zombie shoot just before halloween. It will be during daylight so we can't use a projector like they did at the Fuzzy Shoot.
I need ideas.
I do have an idea of using cardboard boxes suspended by a string & balloon. The box is the zombie head & the balloon is inside. Shoot the zombie in the head, that pops the balloon, & it falls down. Only a head shot will suffice.
We'll also print out zombie targets to paste/tape onto the steel.

But what else?

Beer? At a shoot? And a school sponsored one at that?
If anyone there tries it, I'll have them removed from the range or arrested.

You've heard of legal limits for DUI (usually .08 BAC), Idaho also has a legal limit for possession of firearms while intoxicated - .04 BAC. So yes, arrested would be a possibility.

I'm assuming tannerite is out of the question? How about some water balloons filled with fake blood added on to your fake zombies. Maybe some smoke bombs to provide that creepy post apocalyptic feel and increase shooting difficulty. Can you use any barriers? Old windows or doors to shoot through would be cool. You could buy some cheap mil surp gas masks and make the shooters wear them. My brother and I practice shooting with masks and it can be challenging especially on quick shots or interactive shoots. Those are my thoughts for now... Or you could just buy some beers !

First off, alcohol & shooting isn't a joke. I've had someone show up to shoot while dunk before, it isn't funny. Neither are the consequences of being arrested for it.
(Frakkin' zombie horses, stay down already...)

Fake blood or red liquid in the water jugs is good. Last time I tried jello, it didn't work as well as I'd hoped (probably screwed up making it).

Unfortunately, tannerite is still prohibited on all BLM land (which is where the range is). Even if we found another public place to shoot, it probably would still be on BLM land. We don't know anyone who has enough land outside of city limits to play on, otherwise it would be at the top of the purchasing order

I am building barriers to use, just cheap plastic drop cloth type, I have someone looking into doors & such. I think they'd boot us at the range for smoke bombs but they might be fun (depending on wind conditions) if we could play on private land :skep:
The gas mask idea is interesting & I like the idea as a challenge but it's a little confusing. The 'z-virus' is not airborne, it is spread by bite. Why would one need a gas mask? Gas doesn't work against zombies so why would one deploy it?

A Gas mask provides an airtight seal over your eyes, nose and mouth so if you are getting up close with the zombies blood doesn't spray in your face. Remember 28 days later...the drop of blood in the eye scene! If it is bloodbourne then I would want a mask. Also might prevent face chewing!

And, sorry, I forgot the sarcasm font color for the beers comment

Didn't see that one, but I saw Ultraviolet where she infected the kid with a tear dropping into his eye.

In fact, she was infected just by getting blood splattered on her face, probably got in via at least one of those orifices.
So yeah, I can see how that makes sense. However, if they're close enough to chew on your face, they can also get at any other body part. Yes for splat protection but for body armor - not so much.

Wish we could get them donated for use... Maybe the local army reserve depot has a few extra?

Pics from our zombie shoot (too many to post) if you want to check it out.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/51kntp1jdpa8x9n/iZU1XIPuM8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Some notes:
The balloon/box idea worked great but the string sagged too much to put t-shirts on them so we just had a bunch of floating zed heads :(

Pomegranates and coconuts explode very well when hit with a .308

Slide-fire stocks burn through ammo very quickly.

We didn't do any scenarios with movement :( We had about 18 people show up & everyone was having fun doing regular shooting. Doing scenarios would only have slowed things down big time since we only had the one bay. But we can always do scenarios at a later shoot.

Like: The Miley Zombie - I'd shoot the you-know-what out of that all day long. Just need to add Paris Hilton Zombie, Kim Kardashian Zombie, etc...

Dislike: Upside down zombie. I think I learned something by looking at that - if an upside down shambler came at me, I just might get eaten. I'd be too distracted trying to turn my head upside down to shoot...

He had that Miley thing set up to hold 8 clay pigeons but one shotgun blast (~25yd) would take out 4-5 of them

Upside down zombie - you don't think a zombie could drop in from above? You have to be prepared for anything.
Yeah, I think it sounds like a good reason for doing that...

Our black powder guy brought out a flintlock shotgun & let me shoot it. That was different, not used to a delay like that  That pattern spreads out fast.

Very nice. Your zombies are much more fun than those that live down the hill from me. Oh, wait, those are neighbors; I think.
Karma. Serving up justice one a**hole at a time.

We did have fun, we made a mess  (we also cleaned it up), and it was an excellent day for shooting.
And I actually had help show up this time! Yippee!

The first shots fired with my brand new SIG P227 double stack 45 are on this.

Very cool.

Mike's video:

The guy with the flintlock isn't firing into the air, it's a black powder thing - I think they call it clearing the barrels.
Don't let the number of shooters fool you, we had a limited size bay so we took turns on the firing line.

I don't think I'm down with the black powder thing in a zombie apocalypse. When facing a herd, I'm pretty sure you're gonna be brain salad...
