55 grain loads?

Post by ColsPaul » 06 Aug 2012, 13:04

I bought some of the blemished 55 gr slugs from Midway
Anyone have a ( non Ramshot ) load for that weight?
Still no Ramshot dealers in Central Ohio
I'm dumping HS 6 now
6.0 behind Hornady 40 Vmaxs

It might be easier to do a search for specific powders that you do have or can get & then refine that search for 55gr
The only 55gr loads I have are for subsonics & they are posted (mostly) in the "Ok folks," thread.

Tactical Search Quickie showed
6gr of Blue Dot in a PS90 - caused the mag to pop but that happens at lower pressures than the FsN is capable of.
Silhouette suggests that you just reduce the True Blue loads by only -0.1grains i.e. ca -1.7%
3.5gr Power Pistol

55gr bullets are a bit on the heavy side for 5.7x28. You aren't going to get the kinds of kinetic energy we see in <45gr bullets... Thats why I have never experimented above 52gr.

Not that this is the exact answer you are looking for, but this was published on Guns and Ammo and may give you a little bit to work with:

I was the one that did 6gr of blue dot, mag poped nearly every round even with a weighted bolt. Might could work if you bought EA's increased power mag catch spring, but I figure what's the point. I have since bought 1250 pulled 40gr vmax and shelved the 55gr idea for now.

Somewhere I have posted (maybe I didn't post it and it is in my notes.... somewhere.... ) HS6 data for 55gr fmj. Believe I shot up to 5.9grs with zero problems (may have shot 6.0gr but cannot remember).

Also, NEVER start anywhere near those charge weights. I am sure that blue dot load is pushing it VERY hard. I was getting around 2000 FPS, maybe a hair lower out of my ps90. 1900FPS seems alot more do able.

.55gr and 4.5gr true blue works great with the fns, but popped the mag on my ps90 every 4th shot. Is true blue to fast of a powder for ps90? Or is .55gr to heavy.

I know almost nothing about reloading 5.7x28mm in real life.

But since this is the internet, I am an expert.

The backpressure from the 55gr is causing your mags to pop. Physics.

Go for it but PLEASE heed VeTTte's warning:

Start low, work up, be watchful for signs of overpressure. If it isn't too much to ask, could you also please post your results & chrono data?

I haven't had a chance to set up my chrony yet. Tried it one day and couldn't get any good reads. I will definitely be working my loads up with 55gr. Once i get results i will post. It might not be for a while tho, as i have plenty of 40gr to burn thru

I'd be interested in that data too. I'm thinking of trying some Nosler Balistic Silvertips that are 55 gr and didn't want to make them subsonic loads. I bought 55 gr Siera Game Kings for that purpose.

I'm just thinking of hunting deer with a larger weight bullet instead of the 40gr V-Max or Spitzer

If you guys do load blue dot behind some 55gr fmjs start at 5.5 or so please. My butthole was puckering shooting those 6gr loads in my ps90. Recoil was stiff.

The SS190 utilizes a very light weight bullet, 31 grains, with a steel penetrator. So you are limited in options. You could pull 62gr SS109 bullets and lighten them up by drilling them out and filling with a lighter filler but this will take patience and attention to detail.

I've recently worked up a load using 55gn Hornady FMJBT bullets.
I have tested this in a ps90 SBR, but not the 5.7 pistol...

Once fired ss197 brass
55gn FMJBT projectile
4.8gn Long shot
CCI 400 primer
1.585 OAL

It cycled the ps90 fine at 4.5, 4.8, 5.0 grains of powder. At 5.3gn, it popped the mag every trigger pull. I don't have a chrono, but seat of the pants feel is that they are slower than ss197. I used a sample size of 10 rounds of each, and have run an additional 30 rounds loaded with 4.8gn of powder.

Hope this helps

I've now had the chance to run a whole lot of these (hundreds). With 4.8gn, I still get an occasional mag pop. I'll recommend 4.5gn instead. I also can tell you this load does NOT work with a supressor: magazine pops every trigger pull.

I've also had the opportunity to play around with Midway's 'Dogtown' 55gn bullets. These bullets load nicely for both the .223, and the 5.7x28. I put them on top of 3.0gn of HS6 in the 5.7x28, and it makes for a very nice subsonic load. These work well with the supressor as well...
