Alternative powder

Post by JoJo » 04 Dec 2012, 10:27

My goal is to have lots of 223 & 5.7 ammo on hand but the cost of the powder is a problem. I currently use Varget for 223. In a conversation with a supplier, #842 & # 844 was suggested to save money. Does anyone have any experience with either of these powders?

I use wc844 for my .223 loads. It's a bit cheaper. There is an outfit locally here that sells it to me for 12 bucks a pound. I'm sure it's going for that on the internet, or if not a little cheaper.

Thanks guys but I bit the bullet and bought the high priced spread. Still a lot cheaper than buying loaded ammo.

Still quite a bit of WC844 surplus pulldown available usually for $85.00/8 lbs. Very similar to H335, burns cleaner, works for most any load except very heavy bullets on about anything 223 case based, I use it for 20 Practical, 223, and 6x45.

Powder costs (at retail) per rd are on the middle of the per round costs list, the two top costs are per rd barrel wear, and bullet (especially if its a good BR quality slug). On the bottom will be primer, and case. Most 223 based rounds will get very good case life, 10+ reloads, plus 223 brass is cheap. On a 223 sized case using pulldown powder will save 4 to 8 cents per rd over retail powders.
