The BEST .22 Rifle on the planet

Post by FNForever » 27 Sep 2011, 17:00

I have been shooting .22 rifles and pistols for nearly 20 years now (young by many standards) and have shot damn near everything I could get my hands on. From Walmart special 10/22's to Anschutz. I had never shot a CZ though. I have some experience with CZ75 and its many variants and can vouch that they are awesome 9mm handguns in every respect. Their rifles are even better. At least the 452 Ultra Lux that I aquired recently. This rifle is absolutely phenomenal and performs on par with rifles 3-4x more expensive. Many people downplay just how well made CZ products are. I had once recommended a CZ550 in .308 with a HSS Kevlar Stock for $700. My friend laughed at me and blew $2500 on some "tactical" nightmare. Its been 5 years since then...he sold his overpriced walking stick and owns a CZ now. Awesome company with some awesome products.

I own the best 22 rifles on the planet :D

I have one more i built for my SWR spectre, but I don't have any photos yet.

22LR is by far my favorite caliber. Love shooting it. Might have to check out CZ's rimfires. :)

I have shot both (not exactly Justin's rifle, but one almost identical setup), and though the CZ is a great gun, those custom 10/22s would be my choice. But, you pay for those too.

CZ makes fine guns though, that is settled.

CZ's pistols are underrated and pretty unknown as they do not advertise much, much like FN in the past. They don't have "Fanboys", per se, vs. the fanatical following of Glock and H&K you commonly hear about and see.

However, their rifles and shotguns are way more sleeper-hits than their pistols. Their rimfires are ridiculous, as are their shotguns.

I, too, have fired pretty much every .22 out there. Pardinis, Benellis, and I had a whole armory of Anschultz match rifles with their awesome diopters at my freedom of use. I shot them once or twice but they weren't that practical for me. I've also shot tricked out M&P .22's (my favourite thus far) and tricked out Ruger 10/22's with all Volz. kits and custom comps and gear. Recently, at the Ruger World Championships, I got to try out more .22's.

Glad you found a great rifle for yourself :)

I laughed at your comment on your friend's nightmare gun. I've seen it a lot. Just recently, an comp shooter was selling his tactified GSG .22 with fake suppressor, VFG, new rails, new stock kit, red dot... the works. It barely had any rounds down it. I actually was tempted at the price, but I know how GSG's work vs M&P's and didn't want to inherit the tacticool nightmare.

The M&P 15-22 is an awesome rifle too, just waiting for the guy on the smith & wesson forum to finish up his speedloader.

CZ shotguns are decent. Nowhere near as nice as their rifles. I love there rifles. They are great shooters and the workmanship on them is as good as European lux brands. I wish they paid as much attention to the workmanship on their shotguns. They shoot great, but look like they are made from the cheapest wood and have tacky adornments.

For me, owning an over under or side by side means having one that looks amazing as well. Plenty of shotguns shoot well or can be tuned to shoot perfectly. it's there adornments that set them apart in my mind. Just a odd thing I have about scatter guns.

I wouldn't doubt that a 10/22 with custom work from a reputable shop would drive tacks with no problems at all. I also really like the semi-auto aspect and that they make 25 round magazines for it. As much as i've owned, sold, shot, and borrowed .22 rifles I have never come accross one in this price range that performs this well. I have no experience whatsoever in competition shooting and i have never had a weapon modified except for a trigger job on my M&P45. I have never shot a CZ shotgun either. They look very nice in person and I wouldnt doubt that they shoot as well as they look. It is one hell of a sleeper company though, I mean some of their best guns show up in beaten up paper boxes. Looks don't always translate to quality.

Oh i had to add this extra little experience i had at the range a few weeks ago. Me and a good friend were shooting the CZ (iron sights) @ 100yds. Up walks this guy with a very fancy rifle case and alot of high end .308 ammo. I mean Winchester Ballistic tip, Hornady TAP, and all this crap. I was kinda jealous. Out comes a DPMS .308 AR with a Zeiss scope on it. I believe it was their SASS rifle. He sets up a target next to ours and proceeds to destroy the dirt mound all around his target. Not one shot out of like 40 hit the target. I offered some help to sight in his scope and he barked some crap about doing this for 20 years and mind my own business. By this point my friend and I had set up my scope(Centerpoint 4-16x40 for $60) and placed spent shotgun shell cases on the gound in front of our target. We started to systematically drop every single shotgun shell we placed down there and every time we hit one that guy would yell every cuss word he could think of. It was hilarious. We would cheer and celebrate every good shot and finally moved on to paper. I finished a box of 333rds winchester .22 and left the range. By the time we left he had yet to hit paper. We had a good 2 hrs of fun for $10 and that is why i love .22

We have to shoot through a steel barrel at the only range around here. Its stupid but they consider it safer. Its about 3 ft in diameter and 4 ft long. So i've heard that subsonic is pretty quiet out of the long barrel on the Ultra Lux but i wouldnt know because that stupid "safety" barrel makes everything sound like a cannon.

I love my spectre, on the 10/22 I made for it, you hear very very little action noise. I added more weight to the bolt, not much. CCI cycles fine, aguila super extra is finicky though.

Still trying to think of ways to quiet down the action noise on my 15-22

I was walking through the gun show a couple of weeks ago (always dangerous), and I was drawn to the subtle call of a CZ 452, in 17hmr. I picked it up and it purred, even with a cheap scope on it. It followed me home for $425. I am so impressed. I went straight out to the range and zeroed it at 100 yards. I put a full box through it, just cuz it was so darn fun, and by the end the 10 ring was dead every shot. For grins, I took it out to 200 yards. It still shot amazing groups, with almost exactly a 10' drop. I gotta go shoot some prairie dogs, soon. Bone stock, I am thrilled with this gun. I still would mind a tricked out 10/22, but I love this one.

BTW, my daughter shoots a GSG 5/22, and she loves it because she loves the tacticool look. It doesn't seem to bother her that we have many hundreds of rounds down it, and have never made it through a mag without jamming. All types of ammo. Fun, but I'd hate to have to depend on it.

awesome... love the 452... shot SpaceCoyote's CZ with a suppressor. It was so silent.

Never liked the GSG, but your daughter's right; it looks cool. I just couldn't like it because.. it didn't work correctly.

The S&W M&P15-22 works pretty well, though!

My bad. Very consistent 10" drop. I was using a 12" shoot n see target. I put a mark 4" above the top and set the crosshairs there, and shot out the bullseye.

I have a Sig 522 that has been very reliable with all kinds of 22 ammo. I cleaned it when I received it and that was 6 months back. Ever since then me and my friends just been going through the Federal 550 round packs. I've shot it in cold weather and during some sandstorms. The gun is very dirty now and still hasn't jammed.

This may sound like I'm stating the obvious. I took my daughter out to the range and we scrapped the Remington in the green 525 box, and got a box of 325 Federal Match Grade 22LR. What a difference in her GSG 522. The scouts are going to have to burn through that Remington in the Ruger Single Six or one of my bolt action 22's. We actually enjoyed the GSG when it wasn't jamming all the time. She still got a couple of common jams, where it just caught the spent casing, but nothing she couldn't deal with. Accuracy was OK too, but that gun will never be a tack driver.

Remington 22 sucks. I bought 2 boxes before I knew that. I have a lot to go through... I need a new rifle

I counted my mom's ammo a while back. Holy smeg! Mom has 4600 rounds of .22LR! And she never goes shooting :skep:

After a discussion with my daughter, we finally decided to sell the GSG 522. It went pretty quick locally. Now she is pretty excited about what she will "upgrade" to. I'm afraid it's going to be more than the $350 I got for the GSG. I am going to stick with .22 LR for her. Likely a 10/22.

Yeah, you won't go wrong with the 10/22.
I will say, stick with the standards. I got the 'AR' style 10/22 and...I've had nothing but trouble. I'm still not sure if it is a break-in issue, cheap ammo issue, or aftermarket extended magazine issue, but it's constantly, bang, jam, bang, fail to feed, bang, jam, jam, jam, bang, FTF, bang, dammit, FTF, jam, jam, bang. New mag. Bang, FTF, jam, jam, bang, repeat.
I bought a box of really good ammo for it and my boys found it before I felt up to testing it. It was gone before I realized they had got into it.

Lol.

I was out of it last night, (4am) misspoke. My fault.

10/22's are clearly awesome, and there are really cool conversions from them from ProMag (Archangel, G36 clone, Halo clone, etc.) that I've used.

I've shot this exact gun. It's great.

For the price, they cannot be beat. Super accurate.

My only issues with 10/22's are bolt bounce and that 15-22's are more ergonomic, are more efficient to rapidly clear jams with (important to any 10/22 platform. You do not have to switch hands if you're right-handed, and magazine release is more available for location and actuation), and they have 35 round magazines available, whereas 10/22's did not use to have comparative capacity (now they do, somewhat).

You guys know that I prefer to own one platform per one application; so selective guidelines are super stringent when I look and critique a platform. Just because I view M&P 15-22's in a raised regard doesn't mean I think 10/22s aren't great. They are. Who cares what I think, anyway!

Like I said, I completely misspoke  . I love Rugers; their Mk series and 10/22s are awesome.

No, this is a factory SR22. Like I said, I dunno if it's because we tried to run cheap ammo, or if it's the aftermarket extgended 20 round mags or if we happened to get a lemon.
I've cleaned this thing religiously. Lubed it well and still get <profanity> performance.

The only .22 ammo to stay away from is Remington. Everything else should run, fine. Fine, used in the context of .22LR; meaning that it should fire at a success rate of 90% or higher.

No, this is the rifle that looks like an AR.

My guess is it's the aftermarket magazine. I've heard all sorts of complaints about them from many people. The factory BX-25 mags are a little more pricey, but they work.

How does it feed with the 10 round mag that came with the gun?

**edit** I stand corrected. You are correct Jeff. It is a 10 round magazine. **edit**

If you like a project rifle that can bleed your wallet dry, buy the lowly 10-22. Find the Kidd website and start ordering "things". Buy a new stock. Purchase new optics. Shoot it a lot. With a new barrel and a Kidd two-stage trigger it will embarrass you and the shooter next to you with the $2000 Anshutz. Of course, by then, you'll be shooting about a $1000 10-22.

WRONG.

BEST PRACTICAL .22 BOLT ACTION RIFLE THAT ISN'T A OVERPRICED CUSTOM MATCH GUN IS A

CZ..

aw. darn.

honestly, even if you compare apples to oranges and put the CZ against the almighty 10/22; I'd take the CZ, anyday.

But can we just let it lie, already? How much more do I have to be CZ tormented, on the only forum I frequent.

Sigh.

I'm a few months late Blue, but in her last outing, the two best groups of the day were .625 & .685 MOA.

There was a used CZ 22 with the McMillan stock on it at Scheels today, don't remember the model. They wanted too much for it though when I priced one new. Made an offer, they declined. Great feeling gun though. Have to check back in a bit and see if it is still there. Might be more desperate to move it then.
