FiveseveN Pistol Variants
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Questions on this subject come up pretty often so hopefully this thread will help clear things up. Below are pictured and described all the versions of the Five-seveN yet released:
Versions
Five-seveN
This is the original Five-seveN variant. It has a DAO trigger and no safety device. It is no longer in production at all (nor was it never made available commercially), so it's extremely hard to find and may sell for over $3000. Note the old FN logo on the frame and the smaller, fixed sights.
Five-seveN Tactical
This is the second Five-seveN variant introduced. It is the same as the first, except for a single action trigger (as opposed to the original being DAO) and the addition of a safety device on both sides of the frame. The slide release on earlier Tactical pistols was dark and of a different shape. Early Tactical pistols also had a dark safety device as can be seen in the left picture given below. Also worth noting is that the Tactical variant, which was previously restricted to law enforcement/military, was briefly made available to individual officers (under the name IOM) with capacity reduced to ten rounds by epoxying in a block of plastic in the bottom of the stack, and with serial numbers from the new IOM range (3861xxxxx). These guns were allowed into the country and a few have actually made their way to the open market. You can tell an "IOM" Tactical from a military/law enforcement only Tactical by first, the serial number is in IOM format (3861xxxxx), not Tactical format (386Mxxxxx). Secondly, the serial is embedded in a metal strip above the accessory rail instead of silk-screened onto the frame above the grip. Finally, the newer Tactical/older IOM has adjustable rear sight whereas the LE/Military Tactical had small, fixed sights (see below pictures). Five-seveN Tactical pistols are becoming rare and may sell for over $2000.
___
Five-seveN IOM (Individual Officer Model)
The IOM variant is similiar in its basic design to the earlier Tactical variant, but differs in having an M1913 accessory rail, lined trigger-guard front strap, magazine disconnect ("magazine safety"), and taller, adjustable sights. It is only available in single action, similar to the earlier Tactical variant. The IOM is now discontinued and NIB usually sells for well over $1000.
Five-seveN USG (United States Government)
This is the most recent version of the Five-seveN. The USG keeps the features incorporated in the IOM, such as the magazine disconnect ("magazine safety"), single action trigger, and tall adjustable sights, but has some differences. These include a square (i.e. conventionally shaped) trigger-guard, checkered grip pattern, and a larger, reversible magazine release. There has been some confusion between the IOM and USG. Just remember once again that no matter what your user's documents call your Five-seveN, if it has the square trigger guard it is a USG. According to FN, the name mixup is due to the transition between the IOM and USG versions. USG pistols labeled "IOM" or "IOM USG" aren't any different than USG's labeled "USG". An average price for a USG is about $800.

I'm guessing you are referring to one of the new colors available for the Five-seveN. FN is offering the Five-seveN now in Black, ODG, and FDE.

Yes you are correct. The picture they have of it is black. But in the discription it is Dark Earth Tan. I read the discription but took for granted that the color was black :wall: . Thanks for your help.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Are there different verisons of specifically the black USG model as well? I notice in the pics above that the black USG has a safety with a smooth surface to it. My USG, which was purchased in march 2007 has horizontal ridges on the surface of the safety, I guess to make it more grippy for the finger operating it. The size and shape of the safety look identical but mine has the ridges on it... Does any one know why?

I have a feeling it's just the picture, my FsN has the vertical ridges as well.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
They changed the controls to be more grippy. The older models don't have the ridges on the safety switch.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Good to know. I've been thinking of changing out my controls. I'll have to call Bob Ailes and see if they have any black controls available, just looks so pretty.
Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Sweet, I actually thought the USGs that had the ridges (like mine) were older. I guess FN needs to update the pics of the black USG on their website.
Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Mine has the ridges, I got my USG in Dec 2005. I have 11 ridges on either side of slide.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
There are some other variations
Here's a Tactical model with 12 dimples on each side of the slide rather than six and a somewhat sleeker slide cover.
I've also seen variations in the DAO model slide covers and controls.
Lastly, this photo of a USG with fixed sights (and called a Tactical) has been floating around for a while:

Welcome to the forum, I don't have a DAO, but the trigger pull is heavy on them because they are double action.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Well, I have a Sig226 that's double action as well, and the DAO feels like it's a 15lb pull and the Sig is about a 3.5lb pull. I was guessing is was part of the safety features, since it doesn't have a saftey.....jmz5 wrote:Welcome to the forum, I don't have a DAO, but the trigger pull is heavy on them because they are double action.
Thanks for the welcome, but I was around a bit on the old forum, and see most of the old gang is still here.
Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
RamRod, The original double-action for the Five-seveN was simply for safety as it was meant to be a military weapon. Your Sig may be a DAK version which is not a true DAO and has substantially lighter trigger than some of the older true DAO Sigs. The DAK can be compared to the LEM by HK that is essentially "pre-cocked".
Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Hmmmm... I just noticed that my DAO looks a little different than the pic posted. Mine had the FN logo on the pistol grip, and it has an HOD (hold open device).

Yes, they have the Trilux sights....
Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Can anyone tell me which variat this is? The mags are marked LE/Gov only. I know it is a tactacal model with a 1 stage trigger and it does not appear to have a magazine safety. The serial #386MZ50XXX. It is in great shape and if know an estimated value would be welcome. I just paid $875 for it with 2 20rd Mags in the FN case but without the cleaning kit or lock.
Thanks,

I bought this gun back in May this year serial # 38. I went on the fiveseven forum and they called it a prototype. I noticed no pictures here so here is one. I paid $710 including tax for it. I sold it in July.
Since I can't seem to post a picture here there are lots of pictures on this thread on a different forum. See posts 23 and 24.

Yes, quite a bit more.
It is quite rare and it is a collector's item.

Actually, they're yanking your chain. It's practically worthless.
I'll give ya $5 for it!
Seriously, it's rare, and you have yourself quite a find there. Most would keep her in a safe as an investment. If you're not the type to keep a safe queen, offer it up for sale or even to trade. You might be surprised what you're offered for a gem like that.

I guess I have the USG. It is clearly marked on the box and IOM, but the pictures tell the tale. :ponder:
Mine is black and I was lucky to find it at a Gun Show here in Miami recently for $899. Bass Pro Shops had it on sale for $849 and I ordered one there, but after six weeks of waiting and no clear answer as to when it might arrive, I grabbed the one new in the box at the Gun Show and canceled the one at Bass Pro. :furious:

found a usg with fixed sights at local gunshow this weekend but were'nt night sights.novak style but alot longer due to filling up the slide..looks good but pretty dumb idea considering how much point of impact difference there is at 25"with just the different fn ammo.not to mention ea or reloads.i would think fixed sights a bad idea unless shooting only one type of ammo and setting accordingly.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Sadly I'm a bit of a noob to the forum world in general but I'll try to fit in the best I can. I'm curious on where I could find the best deal on one of these and which model I should aim for. I'm not much for collecting but now that I'm back on top of things it's time to reset up my home defense and also get something I will enjoy to shoot. I noticed that the ammunition is everything but cheap so where's the best place to buy a nice stock of rounds to blow through and which ones are best for nome defense? Sorry to rant but I'm trying to kill as many birds as I can on this first shot

Serial numbers and dates
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that FN used the Browning serial number/date scheme on the earlier FiveseveN variants. ( http://www.browning.com/customerservice ... /index.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
In 1998 Browning redid the standardization of its serial number identifications to work with its new data base program, Oracle.
1. FiveseveN Type 386=All FiveseveN models
2. Date of Manufacture
is a two digit code Z=1
Y=2
X=3
W=4
V=5
T=6
R=7
P=8
N=9
M=0
3. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year. [FN appears to start at 00001 each year.]
Serial
Number Example:
386MZ01001
This would be a FiveseveN pistol, manufactured in 2001 with the serial number 01001.
Theory, not definitive fact, but it seems to fit.

But they also have a smooth accessory rail and trigger guard, meaning sans ribs or nibs or grooves what ever you want to call them.
Also, an original tactical slide will have six dots on the grip at the back instead of grooves.
Additionally the tactical should have a safety, and is usually black, as compared to grey on every subsequent model excluding FDE and ODG USG models.
Furthermore, the pistol should not have a magazine safety, meaning the hammer should fall with trigger actuation when a magazine is not present in the magazine well.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Mine has none of those features but does have the 3861 serial number that I thought it was said to indicate a tactical model. The photo below the tactical doesn't show a rounded trigger guard. I'll look again; Maybe I missed something.

That photo shows a trigger guard different from mine. Mine is straight on the bottom portion of the trigger guard. That is not the case for the one indicating what a tactical model looks like.

Then you probably have a USG with fixed sights, which is a much newer model than what was pictured.owsi26 wrote:That photo shows a trigger guard different from mine. Actually, no. My rear sight is adjustable. Well, whatever it is, I like it!

Then it's just a regular old USG. Should be exactly like one of the three posted on the first page.

You must've gotten it when it first came out, then. It's the newest variant, sans the variant of the USG with fixed sights.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
I was afraid that I would be asked that. I have more handguns that I haven't fired, yet I pay over $200 a year for a shooting range, hunting and fishing rights, etc., but I haven't been there in years. It took a long time waiting for an opening so I would hate toose my spot.
I'm disabled thanks to a drunk driver hitting me doing 45-50MPH while I was sitting at a red light. Even worse was that I had leaned way forward to adjust the radio when he hit me. I was strapped in but it didn't help much.
To shorten this, I've had two neck surgeries for 2 of the 3 (4 new ones since then) ruptured discs. I also made contact with 100,000 volts that came in my right arm, out my left hand and mid-thigh on my right leg. I developed a muscle disease that affects both arms, my right leg, yet my left leg is fine. I know the shock caused this disease that is slowly progressing.
I've been unable to work since my second neck surgery, not so much because of that (but the surgery didn't help the excruciating pain) but the muscle disease progressed until I had to use a cane. Plus I remained in
severe pain and it has increased through the years.
I have to take a lot of medications that make me very sleepy. BUT, If I cancel my membership, it would be admitting that I'll never shoot again and I'm stubborn. Also' I don't have anyone to shoot with. I've even done the unthinkable: carrying for SD when I haven't even shot it. That includes the Five Seven.

That was very elequent and kind. Were those your remarks or something I should remember from school?!
I meant to say something else. With taking strong muscle relaxers, I can walk unaided - until I broke my right foot in Jan., doc said I did the worst thing possible to my foot. Broke 2 bones, dislocated 2 more and tore a ligament loose. He said It should be recovered by july but I'll have to wear an orthopedic device for the rest of my life. Naturally, it was my right foot - the leg that has problems.
My luck isn't good lately. I was in the bathroom and I heard the phone ring. Thinking it might be in regards to my dental appt. today, I rushed to the phone and my right foot got caught and I crashed to the floor injuring my right foot, right knee (it needs artifical knee and twisted my lower back - where I have another ruptured disc.
Anyway, I didn't mean to get us off topic; I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate the nice remarks.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
The Five-seven Tactical was introduced shortly after the original double-action only variant, as a single-action alternative. It had a short and light trigger pull of 2 to 3 daN (4.4 to 6.6 lbf), as on current models.[44] It also had the addition of an ambidextrous manual safety device (located on each side of the frame, as on current models), and a slide release.[44] Aside from these differences, the Tactical variant was identical to the original double-action only Five-seven. It was discontinued following the introduction of the IOM variant.

I ordered a set of All Black Controls from FN (I don't like the Gray - personal preference). I received a partial order a month ago and still waiting for the other pieces before installing them all. I think it just looks better in black and an easy swap. Cost was under $20 (plus my labor).

Re: Serial numbers and dates
anyone figure out the serial number info ? i know this isnt correct for mine, it looks like a usg but on the metal stamped serial number on the rail my serial number states "38619XXXX " no letters only numbersEsteves wrote:I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that FN used the Browning serial number/date scheme on the earlier FiveseveN variants. In 1998 Browning redid the standardization of its serial number identifications to work with its new data base program, Oracle.
1. FiveseveN Type 386=All FiveseveN models
2. Date of Manufacture
is a two digit code Z=1
Y=2
X=3
W=4
V=5
T=6
R=7
P=8
N=9
M=0

Does anybody know if the rear sight on the tactical model can be changed out for a fully adjustable rear sight ? If all else fails I was thinking about purchasing another slide with the adjustable sighjt and just changing them out. Any thoughts on this ?

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
Need help guys! I'm trying to do research for my step-father's Five-seveN. After hours of searching for an answer online, I can't seem to find anything. His pistol seems to fall into some unspecified category between the original variant and the changes made on the tactical variant in that although there is a slide release, there is no safety on this gun. The serial number starts out 386MZ10XXX. I don't know if this was some mid-generation model made before the actual tactical version. He has both IOM and USG models as well, and this one is completely different from the others. It has a low profile fixed rear and front sight, but the logo is on the handle instead of underneath the slide as shown in the original post. Anyone out there with answers? Thanks!

You guys know I don't put looks as a priority, when purchasing firearms to shoot; that design is ugly and looks brashly put-together.
More importantly, at least the pictures of the adjustable sight models have better rear adjustable sights than the USG models.

Re: FN FiveseveN Pistol Variants
I got to check out the MK2 at the NRA show. It looks and feels and is a lot better, in person.
I like it. The slide is definitely manufactured a lot sturdier and the sights are a huge improvement; I am never for the preference towards an adj sight using the bladed design vs the moving block.
I'm looking forward to testing the new pistol out.
The lower frame does have a taper, so it is not 100% a duplicate of the USG's. I did not have the chance to verify and compare it to the USG for other variances.
