S4 conversion - what is done to the SS195

Post by wheelguy » 03 Dec 2011, 08:20

I tried searching, but found no detail that explains exactly what is done to the SS195 rounds that are sent in for the S4 conversion. Could you please explain some of the non-proprietary details?

Thank you, Wheelguy!

We pull down the ammo and replace the powder with our own and replace the primers as needed. Then we re-seat the 28gr bullet.

There is no source for the 28gr bullets. They are made by FNH in Belgium and not sold to the public. We are currently working with a custom bullet maker so that we can have them produced over here. We off this service since we have a limited supply of 28gr bullets for S4M and this gives folks an option to get the prior version of that round.

Ok, but what do you mean by "replace the primers when needed"? That is, how do you decide whether or not to replace the primers? Is this maybe related to the lead free issue whereby you are always replacing the lead free with a leaded version?

SS195LF they'd replace the primers on because they're lead free.

If that is so, it would be an additional selling point for those who don't like the LF primers. I haven't seen that stated anywhere by panzer as of yet, though I may have missed it.

It's stated multiple times on older threads.

Sorry the search function didn't work for you :(

Try googling, it works for me most of the time.

Wow - google gave me zip. At least the forum search shows 6 matches for "s4 primer". Nothing about the primer being replaced in those 6 though. Anyhow, I'd like to know what EA is doing nowdays with the primers, since practice may have changed from the past.

Ok to clear up any confusion;

When EA revamps your ss195, they remove the bullet, remove the LF primer, seat non-LF primers, add their proprietary formula, seat the bullet back according to their formula. Then they send it back to you in the form of S4 that will have a longer round-life and is much more potent than the LF-primered ss195.

This practice has not changed.

Does that answer your question? :)

Just curious, if you replace the primers, power & bullets all that is left is the brass... So why can't we just send in brass? Thanks, Bill

They need virgin brass for those rounds.

And the 28gr bullets that are as I stated above not available for purchase in anyway here or in Europe.

And if you pull it down yourself they can't guarantee you do it correctly.

Yep - that is exactly what I wanted to know. I think this may be the only place where the process is described.

I haven't decided if I'm worried about the LF primers, but having them replaced with the good stuff is another motivation for me to go to the expense of having the work done. I'm very happy with my red tip EA, so maybe I'll spring for this other type.

Glad that helped.

I am also very very content with my red-tip EA. I have won several matches using it. PEWPEW.

It just performs very well.
