53gn Hornady VMax

Post by Avihann » 01 Oct 2024, 03:12

Hi Guys,
With some 53gn left from other calibers, I'm hoping to develop a load for my 57. According to GRT, using VV N340 (4.8grn), one can expect 1500fts at PMax-15%, 1,5945 COL. Anyone tried these guys yet?

Possibly deeper in the reloading section. Your AOL is WAY to long.

1.585 Is the max OAL or you will have magazine issues.

Not sure what you are using for your data for bullet but this load in north of 60k PSI

It's been awhile, VV N340 I looked through my notes and for some reason I remember there being an issue. But I can't find it in my notes. I think metering the charge was the issue. The size of the powder rods with the small 5.7 case created issues for consistent powder charges.

Thank you P.

I'm struggling to paste the graph from GRT as an image here, but that indicates at 4.8grn:
Max Pressure 42503
Muzzle pressure 9381
Projectile energy 377J
Muzzle Velocity 1537fts
Gas outflow velocity 2211fts

At 4.5grn Max pressure only 37700

Input values seem correct in terms of bullet specs.

Agree on the COL. It just clears the mag. May not feed well, but if my pressures are that far off, its back to the drawing board. What is the max safe charge that you get?

Much appreciated.

A.

Due to insurance liabilities I can't promote/provide/ load data.

I do how ever speak up when I see shit that does not seem right.

This powder is right at the limit for being too fast of a burn rate for the 5.7.

I ran the numbers through my lab software and the 60K is what I got.

Since we are looking at 98% fill on the case, along with the fast burn rate, also with the weight of the bullet 60k seems low. It will blow your primers out.

When running faster powders you must keep the bullet weights down.

Dropping down to a 35gr Vmax the numbers look much better.

40gr V max with this load is a nice 40k plinker load. I suspect what ever you're using there might be an issue with the 53gr bullet listed but the program is using 40gr weight for the bullet.

Thank you so much!

I'm having it checked this side within the shooting community, but will pull those guys.

Any suggestions on more appropriate powders?
I have Varget and Titegroup as well as most of the 5 series VV's.

Insurance concerns noted! (Less of an issue here (thankfully).

Cheers.

AA5 with LIGHT bullets, AA7 and AA9, 9 better for heavier bullets.
TB if the cunts at Hornady after buying western powders stop making it.
These are nice small spherical powders that meter very nicely in the small 5.7 case.
