I went through the same thought process, but ultimately decided that the cause is too important. Wanted to add my voice somehow.

That's also why I posted it here: I didn't want to be alone and there's strength in numbers. Right?

There is also a petition available that asks that the deficiencies in the mental health "system" be addressed. If I felt like researching this issue for changes in Colorado or Virginia, I wonder what I would find? Guessing, I would say sadly that nothing of substance has changed. And, please, I am not advocating for certificates of mental fitness or any such BS. On the other hand, they would probably disqualify many of our sitting electing officials if required to hold office.
Karma. Serving up justice one a**hole at a time.

Signed.

Amazing that it has nearly 20,000 signatures already. Need another ~6000 to make it "official," of course they are not actually legally bound to use the suggestion or even acknowledge it, but it's there.

If you really want your voice heard, write your congressman. This petition won't get anyone anywhere.

The petition is a waste of time. Lanza's despicable actions, together with the other recent shootings, have served as the catalyst that will initiate a series of knee-jerk reactions by self-serving liberals. Those actions will be widely supported in the general population because emotion always wins out over reason.

Waste of time or not, I signed it. I am going to type up a letter to send my congressman (who is a hardcore liberal, so that letter will probably not even get acknowledged) and my Senators. This will be my first time writing them, does anyone have any sample letters or anything like that?

Don't use a sample letter. As soon as they start seeing letters that look like part of a program, they get ignored. Be original. (Coming from an ex-elected that got a lot of letters)

"Emotion always wins out over reason" is a horrific yet true statement. The road to tyranny is paved with good intentions. It's always cries for stability, law and order that lead to despotism.

I got an email response to the petition. Too long to post here & has a video I didn't watch.

Short version:
It's a complex issue but something has to be done. "Anything done will be with respect to 2nd amendment."
Looks like they are considering another assault weapons ban.
The President called on Congress to pass important legislation "banning the sale of military-style assault weapons," "banning the sale of high-capacity ammunition clips," and "requiring background checks before all gun purchases, so that criminals can’t take advantage of legal loopholes to buy a gun from somebody who won’t take the responsibility of doing a background check at all."
This was at the bottom of the email:
If you have additional ideas and are interested in further engagement with the White House on this issue, please let us know and share your thoughts here:

I'd seen it before, but it IS powerful and worthy of another round on the internet. The faces of the pompous [expletive deleted by author before posting] Congress-folks are revealing...they look sooooooo interested.

It's also been posted on here a time or two but it's important enough that it needs to have another go around occasionally.

Just sent a letter to the pres, senators and rep:
Dear Mr. President, Senators and Representative:

While the recent event at Sandy Hook elementary school was an absolute tragedy and I understand how painful the loss must be for those touched by it, blaming firearms or their owners and punishing them is not the answer to the challenges we face as a nation.

Limiting access to sporting rifles and/or handguns will do nothing to stop criminals or mentally unstable people from obtaining them. The only function of any weapon ban will be to keep them out of the hands of law abiding citizens.

"Feel-good" legislation is not the answer, and worse, it will do absolutely nothing to protect our children. It's like operating on the toe while the patient is dying.

If the true goal is to protect our children, then enact legislation that will do that. Banning firearms that are rarely used in crime is not going to stop such tragedies, that was proven in 1999 when the Columbine shooting took place under the 1994 ban. Do something meaningful, please. Make getting help for people with mental disorders easier. Put armed security guards in our schools because currently they are gun-free zones and the criminals know it. Please do not strip us of our constitutional rights and property by passing additional anti-gun laws that have historically had no positive effect on crime in our nation or others.

Thank you.
I hope everyone does the same.

Let's not sit this one out and think "The ban will never pass." It did in 1994. This one is much worse.

How about not candy-coating it?
Dear Mr. President-
I know that you and your gun-hating cronies have been sitting around just chomping at the bit WAITING for the blood of innocents to be spilled just so you could use their deaths to further your gun-grabbing agenda.
I know that NOTHING I say will change your mind because you are a small minded bigot with a single-minded agenda...disarm the American populace so that you can better control us.
Well, up yours, you self-serving, sanctamonious son of a bi#&*.
Sincerely-
A pissed off American Veteran

Yes, that's what I meant to say.

Here's an excellent article:
The people either have the right to own and bear arms, or they don’t, and to the extent legislators, judges and bureaucrats disparage that right, they are violating the U.S. Constitution as it was originally conceived, and as it is currently amended. To those who would pretend the Second Amendment doesn’t exist or insist it doesn’t mean what it says, there is only one legitimate response: “If you don’t like the Second Amendment, you may try to repeal it but short of that you may not disparage and usurp it, even a little bit, as long as it remains a part of the Constitution, no exceptions, no conniving revisions, no fabricated judicial balancing acts.”
