What would happen if you loaded a 28gr SS195 bullet in a 223 Winchester Super Short Magnum cartridge and shot it out of a barrel with a really slow twist? Is 5000 fps a possibility? And if so...how might one avoid having their barrel melted? :ponder:

The barrel burn comes from over bore NOT the fast bullet. What it would come down to is would the Copper jacket stay on the Aluminum. I can't remember but I think MO pushed them once to see. I am sure he will be along soon.

yea....my Hornady Handbook has a 40gr VMax w/ 45.2gr of IMR 4064 at 4600fps. They say the barrel had significant errosion after 350 rounds.

4600 FPS? Holy WOW.
You guys are spouting real numbers too...that's what makes it seem so 'unreal'.

I remember the first winchester WSSM that came out, before they got sold to FN.
There was a chart showing how after about 1000 rds of the stuff, the groups in the barrel started opening up.
Same would probably be the same for the 220 swift, 22-250 and other high velocity rounds.
Definitely not good for longevity.
Would moly coated bullets push the velocity significantly more?

Well, if I understand MO correctly, the bullet is never going to go any faster than the speed of the expansion of the gases. If the gas itself doesnt exceed 4600, then moly coating isnt going to help it any.

But it should get a little closer to that elusive 4600fps.Grantness wrote:Well, if I understand MO correctly, the bullet is never going to go any faster than the speed of the expansion of the gases. If the gas itself doesnt exceed 4600, then moly coating isnt going to help it any.
If I remember my oceanography correctly, that is generally about the same speed of sound underwater.
