Looking for some 308 recipes
Finally got all my LC 308 brass prepped. I've got 168 gr FMJ, CCI BR2 primers and will be shooting thru my M1A. I'm going to use Varget. All my searching has yielded around 37 grains for a start point and 41 (roughly) for a max. Anyone got experience with this conglomeration?

You going to crimp?
:ponder: Hodgdon's data says 46 grains for the max
168 GR Hodgdon Varget .308" 2.800" (COAL) 42.0gr (START) 2520 (VEL) 41,200 CUP 46.0gr (MAX) 2731 (VEL) 50,600 CUP
I tend to modify the OAL to tailor to the rifle (depending on where you want the bullet to sit in relation to the rifling)
These plinkin' rounds your cookin up or are you looking for tac driving?
Keeping in mind you'll never be as good as m1ashot.

Yeah I was going to crimp, and this will be military brass so I know the loads need to be lighter. Do I need to have someone shove my head in a urinal so I can get that competitive edge?

Re: Looking for some 308 recipes
So it seems that my PTR is liking the hotter loads for accuracy. I am using IMR 4895 and Lyman's says the max is 45gr (150gr bullet) but the barrel on mine is longer than usual; I want to see if going higher would be of any use. Is there a rule of thumb for going over manual maximums?
Obviously for the FsN, increase at .1gr increments & watch for signs of overpressure.
But what about .308? Watch for signs of course but how much of an increment is reasonable? On one hand I don't want a KB but on the other, I don't want to waste my time/powder with loads that won't change much.
I won't be crimping - don't have a crimp die yet
Any advice?

Re: Looking for some 308 recipes
40.5 gr Varget and 175 SMK was a load I used very accurately in past. But I have sold all my 308s years ago so there may be better options for powder and bullets now.
With rifles, I would increase by .2 to be absolutely safe. I admit to going up .5 at a time before, but got a pretty good gas blast once and stopped doing that.
And I don't see need to crimp at all. Should feed in M1A just fine.

Re: Looking for some 308 recipes
Done, thanks.
I went up a total of 2 grains over max so far, 4 rounds each. I'll pull down the ones not used if any.
EMS on standby
