Detonics 451 Magnum

Starting with the standard caveat. When it comes time to go to the range, no matter how many handguns are in the safe, the FsN wins. It gets more range time than all the others put together. That said, I haven't been this giddy about a new purchase in ages. I've even been studying how to upload pics just for this. In 1986, a buddy of mine got a Detonics Scoremaster as a college graduation present and I have coveted one ever since. It finally happened, and this minty 25 year old piece of jewelry has found a new home. Let's see if that pic thing works.

Would you mind posting a few pictures of the round itself? Maybe compared to other common calibers if you have them. I went looking and can't find a picture, but from what I read in like a 2 minute search it's longer than a .45ACP but shorter than a .45 WinMag.

I'll take some more pics later, but this is the one I have now of the ammo.

It is .050 longer brass than .45ACP, but with a stronger web to handle increased pressure. The reload manual says to use 9.5 to 11 grains, as compared to max of 7.5 grains with .45ACP. The extra length keeps the .451 from chambering in a standard .45 barrel. Brass is pricey. Quality cartridge still makes new brass for it at $62/100, or crazy folk on the web have original brass for $99/100. My pawn shop cuts down .308 brass and makes it for less.

Make you own brass.
45 super brass externally dimensionally is the same as 45acp just thicker web internaly. It's gets this thickness since it's made from cut down .308 rifle brass.

All you have to do is trim .308 brass to the length you need.

MUCH cheaper.

That looks like it will be a REALLY fun one to shoot. I've always loved the out of the ordinary rounds...

That is cool!!!!
I haven't seen actual 451 brass in a while, I used to use it to make 45 Super (before Starline came along).

Resurrecting a zombie post. That 451 and I spent a lot of time at the range with both 45ACP and a few different recipes of 451 Magnum ammo. I found a source of brass and picked up 900 pieces and had a good time attracting attention at the range. Put 11 grains of Unique behind a 200 grain bullet and everyone turns to see what just went off.

Just about the time I mentally relegated this gun to "shooter" status, a guy popped up in a forum and reminded everyone that he had been searching for a 451 Magnum Scoremaster for years. I told him what a "collector" price would have to be, and I'll be darned if he didn't take it. I miss it, but I can afford something pretty special now.
