Good test. That is a NO GO round for me for many reasons for my FiveSeveN.

At least you don't have to chase your brass very far.

Weird thing is this has been our tried and true 5.5 SS round for years and has worked fine in the past for even Buffman.

Not sure what happened and I am looking into it.

Improved Barrel Assembly

Post by Toaster » 02 Nov 2016, 18:12

This is a bummer to see. And only 50 grains

In hindsight, I wish the threaded barrel I bought offered a faster twist, say 1:7, and a ~16 spring.

Thoughts?

^ you mean so you could run 62gr bullets? Someone does make a 55gr all copper round that does expand :)

Yes, exactly.

I know of several companies that will make monolithic bullets. Sometimes even brass solids with "air cores"

SMH..

But anyway, I don't think many of them if any will expand at subsonic velocities.

I'm curious why Jay never looked into this. As it really doesn't seem very off the wall or difficult. Most people use the threaded barrels for slow heavy bullets through a can.

Very few use them for high power light loads with a brake.

There's hardly many noteworthy bullets <40 grain.. Which is sad because the gun needs them to make the speed and power for a brake to be worth a damn.. Not that a brake is something I'd need for a 5.7 unless you're looking at using the huge muzzle flash to fix a tiny recoil.

5.7 expanded 2x = .448"
45 ACP expanded none = .451"
195/198 that tumbles = .816"

When it comes to these little bullets, I'll take a tumble over an expand every time. As for the need to suppress the 5.7 with subsonic rounds, why? Why not just suppress a .22? Same energy levels. The FsN with a can on it is absolutely the quietest supersonic firearm I own. Yes the bullets break the sound barrier, but they're tiny bullets with good aerodynamics, so they really don't sound too bad. I've given a lot of thought to replacing my M&P with my FsN as the bedside gun, only thing that's holding me up is reliability at this point.

Because they just won't stabilize across all platforms. I used 55gr for all our SS for years.

Now you need to take into consideration, most threaded barrels have the same twist rate as the factory barrels.
Using anything heavier than 50gr means that at least 1/4 of all customers who buy my ammo will have key holing at 20 feet.

Using a 50gr bullet guarantees the bullets will stabilize no matter what barrel combination is used.
I also use a jacketed soft point bullet since a large percentage of customers who buy my SS will be using it against hard targets not just soft.

Now if you are looking for a slow round that will expand more in just soft media you may want to look at this

VarminTOR II:
50 grain Sierra Blitz King #1450c
FPS: Fiveseven Pistol: 1,634 PS90: 1,913
25 Rounds per box

Because subsonic 55gr FMJ 5.56/5.7 will penetrate level IIIA, .22 LR won't :D

Guess I need to get some of this to shoot through the bolt gun against some soft armor I have laying around the house to see

Still finding out which 55gr FMJ will do this like the factory SB193 does. I tried some generic FMj and it was a no go.

What do you think the magic FPS is to get the desired outcome? I am running factory AE 40g FMJ right at 2100Fps.

^ That will do it no problem in most cases. I'm trying to figure out what will do it subsonic :D

Guess I should pay more attention to the subject line when I reply! What is the minimum FPS you think it what I was wanting to ask. I am still fairly new to this round as a whole, I have done tons of reading on it and minimal reloading so far but that will change. I had the pistol many moons ago and shot it a lot but ended up trading it. The current 5.7 platform I have is proving to be a really accurate piece as I work more with it but want to play around with variety of rounds. It doesn't make sense to me to reload if I cant do that. The hard part is talking myself into spending time on this little rocket ship or doing more load development for the 22 Nosler.

^ Think 62 grain is to heavy to load up in this case?

Yes it just won't stabilize. 55gr can have issues also. This is why we switched to 50gr for all of our SS rounds.

I have done some research where guys get fairly accurate results from 55 grain bullets in a 1:14 barrel, I may have to play with some and see what they do in my gun. I have to make some stuff up as I go along with what I read here since most everyone here has a 1:9 twist barrel and some guys probably even faster with a 1:7 barrel.
