Power Banks

Post by jmz5 » 04 Jun 2015, 10:30

Anyone have any experience with these external battery packs? I'm looking for one to take with my on long trips, I don't want to leave my phone plugged into airport outlets anymore

I'm looking at getting this one. Anker seems to be a respected brand.

I have one, but I have never opened it. My sister's fiancee gave it to me.

So... no?

Don't see why they won't work. Just make sure you fully charge it before you go. These things die off after a while and lose charge after many months.

I have one and it works well. Just fully charge it before a trip. It has a BIG internal battery and will never fully charge from a computer USB port. Get the recommended charger - or one rated at least 2.5A at 5VDC.

Yeah, from what I read, this thing wants to be charged from my ipad wall charger, so it will get 2.4amps instead of 1.1. To try to charge that beast from a computer usb would be a crime..

I want something with smart usb charging ports and that will charge my ipad as well, in fact this unit will mostly be powering an ipad or 2.

Anker or LimeFuel, both highly recommended. I have a 20000mAh LimeFuel, had an issue with it where it wouldn't charge anything anymore (likely a fuse or burned out USB port), they sent me a new one in a couple of days no questions asked... Didn't even have to return the original.

I was at a presentation by Elon Musk's team that is building the new battery gigafactory in Northern Nevada. Pretty impressive stuff that I could talk about for a while, but I will try and stay on topic here. He is spending $5 billion to manufacture the Panasonic 18650 cell, and use it to make large battery packs for cars and many other uses. They told us they had analyzed every battery technology on earth and concluded that nothing can best the 18650. I have taken that to heart, and use them for a number of items. Flashlights that use the 18650 are particularly impressive. Look for a phone charger that uses an 18650, charge it appropriately, and you won't be disappointed. I bought some with a company logo on them. They come with pigtail for micro USB, old apple and new apple. I have charged my Samsung and a friends iphone at the same time. Works great.

I use the Mophie Juice rechargeable batteries.
The 1350 mAH Juice
And the 6000mAH Juice powerstation Pro.

To recharge these when off grid, you can purchase notebook sized portable solar panels with USB plugs. These can charge a typical smartphone in 4hrs during sunlight.

6kmah isn't going to cut it, I need at least 20k for my setup. I believe the Ipad's batter is over 8kmah.
