Varmint Nightmare Bullets
I just got a package in the mail of 500 Varmint Nightmare 34gr bullets from Midsouth Shooters. They are bulk packaged and it says on the bag that they are from a "major manufacturer". Anyone have any idea what they are?
I also got a box of Hornady NTX 35gr bullets. Looks like more fun working up a load for both.

Not really how I wanted that post to look. The process for posting images works a little different every time I use it.
Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
Let me know how they shoot. For 8.5 cents a bullet, those would be worth it.
Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
I'm going to have to rework my load for the 35gr. Hornady. Is it a much longer bullet, and I can't go any longer on the OAL or they won't fit in the mag. It is going to compress the space and work up more pressure. With the Varmint extreme bullets, the OAL will obviously be much shorter.
Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
I found out they are made by Nosler. Sold by Midway as "Dogtown". I should have some loaded up in a week.

Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
Been shooting them in my FiveseveN and my 22 TCM for two plus years now. On a good day both the FiveseveN and the TCM will hold about five inches at fifty yards offhand. Really good stuff. Haven't shot any of them on game - just paper.

The 34g 20 cal VNE is an excellent short range critter gitter in rifle calibers.
Only drawback to the 34g 22 cal in a 5.7 is you may have feeding issues due to the wide meplat,
otherwise the same as above excellent short range plinking/critter gitter.

I've run 1K or so through a PS90 and really like them. I've shot 2 groups of 5 on on paper, different days, with a red dot. Group 1 = 1/2", Group 2 = 3/4". No feeding issues at 1.500" OAL.

Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
I got up early this morning for a quick loading project before work. I ended up several hours late. Typical. I loaded up 10 rounds each at 4.9, 5.1, 5.3 and 5.5 grains with the 35 gr Hornady NTX bullets, and the same ladder with the 34 gr Varmint Nightmare bullets. After a bit of math, I loaded the VNX bullets to an OAL of 1.475, and the NTX to 1.575. The difference in bullet length is even longer than that, so I still have less bullet in the case with the little Varmint Nightmare bullets. I will get out to the desert tonight or tomorrow and set up the chrono and some targets and see how they work. This round will all be through the pistol. PS90 next time.
Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
I will try and copy some data from this mornings shoot into this post. Forgive my formatting. It was a perfect slightly overcast day, about mid 60's. All of the rounds fed and functioned great, even at pokey speeds down around 1,400. I set up a target behind the chrono, primarily for the purpose of NOT SHOOTING MY CHRONO. I was not dissappointed with any of the groups. By the time I was finished, the center was pretty much shot out. I did not have any keyholing or fliers. I started this ladder very low, as I had little to go on. I have quite a bit of room to go up. The shot strings below are with 4.9 gr of True Blue. I was extremely careful with checking the loads and OAL for consistency, but the spreads are pretty dramatic. I can imagine the frustration Jay must have gone through working up a high power load.
This 4.9gr load would be considered a "mouse fart" load. It felt light, but the pistol functioned great.

Re: Varmint Nightmare Bullets
OK, the formatting looks terrible, so I won't post too much till I figure that out. I will skip the 5.1gr and 5.3 gr loads. 5.5gr still gave a good load with no sign at all of over pressure. The spread continues to get larger as the load goes up. I don't really have the knowledge or patience to test the case volume of every case, but that is the only real variable left. I am carefully weighing the exact same powder from the same batch, with the same bullet and OAL. These all shot very well, and the little short Varmint Nightmare Extremes fed great in the pistol. I will try this load in the PS90, then work it up a little higher.

Hey thanks for the write up! I am looking for different recipes in case the powders disappear again, I can reload with whatever I got. Thanks!
