Setting up dies

Post by buckdp » 01 Apr 2013, 20:29

I am new to reloading, just setting up Lee dies to reload my 5.7. Bought a go/no go gauge from Elite Ammo, tried a couple shells and case stuck in gauge close to the bottom of casing. How do I adjust my die to cure this.

Sounds like your sizing die needs to be adjusted. Check the instructions that came with the dies but I think you should turn your die down a bit, like maybe at 1/4 turn increments until the case fits in the gauge. Just don't over crank it - you want some resistance when it "cams over" but you also don't want to crush/break anything.
Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fix stupid - it's just illegal.

I am having the same problem with my Lee dies, it gets stuck in the go/no go gauge just the same. I already tried adjusting the die, doesn't make a difference. So what now? Throw these in the trash like everyone else says or am I doing something wrong?

The lee dies work just fine. I am using them. If you think you have some bad dies call Lee. They will replace them. Lee is know for great customer service.
Here are some videos that might help.

I don't know what press your using but this general the way you set up lee dies.
Secondly try using the barrel from your gun and see if the case will fit in there. I have never used the Go no Go gauge but I have read that a lot of people can't get there brass into the Go no Go gauge but it will still work fine in the gun.

That's the way I had it set up. I tried to loading a few into my FiveseveN, if I load them into the magazine with only 1 single round, it will load it, but I can feel the slide cover is still open by maybe 1mm, it's not flush like when it is empty or loaded with factory SS197. I also tried loading it with a full magazine, they get stuck and do not cycle properly (I manually pulled the slide by to eject each round). I'll give Lee a call and see what they say. Someone else on this forum on a different post said they sent some dies back to lee and lee said they were perfectly fine and nothing wrong with them.

I bought lee dies and they didn't work. Then I bought rcbs dies thinking they would be better. .. and they weren't right either. So I ordered hornady dies... and they are perfect. the lee dies were wrong in the diameter of the case, and the rcbs dies were wrong on the shoulder... I tried everything humanly possible to get the lee dies to work, cuz I couldn't imagine the die was made wrong... after I got the hornady dies I was stoked!

Which Hornady dies specifically did you buy? I see some series 2 dies and some Custom Grade new dimension dies. And these will fit on a Lee press? Does anyone know if the RCBS shellholder will fit on Lee presses?

Just the regular hornady 5.7x28 dies. They will fit on the lee. Yes the rcbs shell holder fits a lee.

Have you tried sizing it slower? If so just send your Lee dies back with three fired cases and they will correct the issue. I personally have 2 Lee sets. One works perfect, the other doesn't work without going slow.

This LEE thing is really aggravating for me since for years to hundreds of customers I have recommended them.

LEE is really screwing up one this one.

I have Lee does and can't figure how to flare the case to accept the projectile. What am I missing?

Also, if I'm using mag primers, should the load weight be adjusted and if so how much ?

You should reduce your loads at least .5gr .
