I talked to Cabelas yeaterday about my backorder for the Federal 40gr TMJ and the lady told me it has a possible arrival of January 12th. Who knows?

What I can't figure out is why FNH does not have the presses running 24/7 pumping out 5.7 ammo. They could push the pre-hording wholesale/retail price up by $10 a box and many people, including me, would happily buy it.

I might speculate they were running the stock of non lead free primer SS197SR out, since the stuff Cabela's has been selling the last couple days is LF 197SR

Looks like I'll be adding a new round to the singles.

I heard about ss197 LF, but I didn't know it was an eventuality.

Time to google pictures. Unless someone has a box they want to photograph? I don't see any online.

Cabela's has a little pop-up disclaimer that says "If this ammo is shipped with a lead free primer, it is only the primer. The bullet still has a lead core". No indication that the ammo was anything other than SS197SR. Of course, I didn't get any delivered, and I would be glad to be proven wrong.

Pictures already surfaced. There's a sticker on them that says lead free primer. Primer color is definately different. brass is stamped 12 as well.

Oh man. That IS a freakin crimp haha. I'll ask for a round from one of our guys from the forum when we go shooting. I just hung out with SpaceCoyote today. We went rock climbing, because there are other things to do than shoot. And I was tired of being around guns, because they remind me of the people spamming every post on my facebook and youtube.

It's sad that annoying factors actually is turning me away from the gun community/guns.

At least I have you guys, who are pretty legit. And then there's the 1% of mall ninjas, but it's better than facebook and youtube. :)

Wait. My 197 is going to have lead free primers? So it'll only be good for like...2 months, so worthless for my stash.

When it gets in I'm sending it straight back.

Agreed - shoot it or sell it. You'll get more money if you sell it instead of returning it.

Or pull it down & fix it :skep:

"...fix it"? Removing a live primer? I've never done that because I'm afraid that the primer may ignite in the de-capping process. Is my concern misplaced?

Depends on how you're planning on de-priming it.

You shouldn't worry if you're doing it with the right tools/dies. Unless you're using a hammer and a pick. :lmao:

Nvm, the primer is staked. I have no clue.

I've deprimed live primers before, it's not really a big deal. Slow steady pressure through stroke & you should be fine. I've never had one fire - maybe I've just been lucky, maybe I'm just that good :p :lmao:

It would seem that the FN factory will continue cranking out replacement. In this thread alone we have listed less than 5000 rounds. So were is the rest? This is the same thing that happen 4 years ago when Obama was first voted in office. Everyone bought amo and guns in fear that the taxes will go up.
And now they are up and the same thing is hapening.

My wife was at Cabelas in Lacey Wa last night and bought the last 2 boxs of ss197lf. They had just stocked 100 boxs on the shelf the night before. She said that the Cabelas employee that orders the ammo said that most of 5.7 shortage was due to the Egypt army purchasing all of the main back stock before Xmas. She was also informed that alot more should be hitting the shelves in the next week or so due to FNH getting caught back up and increasing production. Also he informed her that they would be getting the AE tmj back in stock within the next week. Hopefully it pans out.

Just to let anyone interested know. I was at the Cabela's at St. Louis Mills today. The salesperson I spoke with said they received an order of 5.7x28 a week or so ago, and it was gone with-in a day and a half. Not trying to tease and build up anyone's hope, but just to let people know where not to look at the moment.

I've always been able to make it rain just by washing my car. I finally broke down and put 500 rounds up on GB. Greedy, maybe. More just curious as to how this craziness works. My luck, mid-way through the auction, FN will flood the market and I will end up giving it away. That's what I get for putting it up with no reserve. :)

I gave in to market pressure! and just sold ten boxes of FN197 for $60.00 a box. I told the guy to wait until the hysteria died down but he insisted. Even at that price I wavered but I still have plenty of my reloads.

Tell him I've got another 10 boxes but he pays shipping haha. At over double what I paid I might be willing to part with some. The FsN has been usurped by my XD-S anyway.

I had someone offer me $100/box of SS197. He just bought a new FsN and wanted to try it out. I bought the ammo to shoot, train, practice, etc with, not to make a profit.

I sold him 2 boxes at my last cost after shipping which was $22/box.

Happy he was.

EDIT: before anyone asks, no more boxes are for sale!

Fellow shooters?

Yes, I agree, brosef, we need to stand up for certain things, together.

But when mall ninjas point loaded guns at me at the range and act like jerks when I nicely ask them to not point loaded guns at me?

I don't get pissed off, IRL. But it really pisses me off when non-firearm people group me as a "gun person" in the same group as all the video game wannabes, mall ninjas and tactifags. I'm really not a "gun person". I just happen to shoot guns. I'm probably in the .0001% of gun owners that own less guns than their fingers (on one hand).

Remember; it's the same with LE. A lot of the good ones and bad ones were already good and bad BEFORE they went in. Gun people are the same; they don't turn MAGICALLY awesome and good people the moment they get a gun. A lot of them are egotistical, mean-spirited, and unsafe.

To those people, I don't see them as being part of my firearms sub-culture. I say sub-culture because firearms is one part of my life. I do a lot of other things, as many do, on this forum. If they ban everything, I'm going to go back to bouldering and rock climbing.

While I will proudly stand by you, Painkillax, there are many that I would not - on the range or in life.

Life is short. Spend it with people who matter :)

If you're done with that soap box, kindly return it to it's properly stored position.

:D

I've got a friend who recently got a new AR57 upper but can't find ammo anywhere on the planet. And it's driving him nuts. He keeps telling me about all the places that don't have it in stock and thinks I should be helping him out in some way. I keep telling him that my help was the last four years of telling him to "get stuff now", and then reminding him of all those times that he just rolled his eyes at me.

So last week I finally felt sorry enough for him that I caved in and offered to sell him two boxes at the price that I paid for them... but with one stipulation. That I get all the brass back. He doesn't reload so it's no skin off his nose. And I do reload so little impact to my plans, as I have thousands of .40 grain Hornady Z and V max bullets. I also made him promise to pick up any other brass he sees and bring it back to the mothership. :D

People tell me to "chill out" or "why are you so worked up"?

They're just uncomfortable because I point out truths that a lot of gun owners would like nothing better to NOT talk about. Kinda like that scuff on your new Corvette that everyone knows not to talk about because it makes you mad.

I'm not mad, everyone who knows me IRL knows I don't get mad. I'm very calm & laugh, a lot. When people tell me to chill out or get off my soap box, online, I just laugh. I'll hold hands and sing your song while we dance around the fire and act like everything's ok and we all will get along. As long as you get rid of all the people who think it is ok to point loaded guns at other people just because we are all "gun owners of America". If you don't have that happening to you every Saturday/Sunday, you can't understand what I'm talking about.

My underlying message to Painkillax was to keep doing what he was doing, and not worry about grouping ALL gun owners under the same bracket/umbrella. :thumb:

This afternoon I spoke to a gun engineer and a lawyer from FNH. I raise the same question. The ammunition factory is running full tilt cranking out the maximum guns and ammunition possible. This means that the brokers and area depots are holding the material to create shortage and causing raise of prices. The source is cranking it out to the max. The middleman is getting fat. That is the only conclusion I can come to.

I found a LGS in Lacey, WA J&S Guns that had about 1000 rounds of what are White Box FN SS192's. I bought one box to try them out while waiting on my order from Cabelas to show up. These I thought had been obsolete so I am not sure what back room them dug them out of. I am still new to the 5.7 realm.

192s have been discontinued for a while, good find. Would you be willing to share what you paid for them? :D The 192 was a good round, it's a shame they stopped making it.

We have a couple of members in that area so I doubt the ammo will be there much longer now that they know about it

Sure thing, the store was j&s gunparts. I just checked their website and it doesn't show anything as available yet I went in to the store last friday and their gun racks were full. Ammo selection was limited and very pricey but I was very surprised to find the 5.7 ammo. I only bought one box since it was $60 and I have a order with cabela's I am waiting on.

Had to remove the link, sorry. Rule 11. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=125" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But now people know there is a website & those eager for ammo can google it.

:( $60 is a bit high even for 192, but then what isn't these days? :wall:

Yea I Just checked out the place smokey talked about. They want $67.99 per box. Date stamp from 07. They originally where asking only $50 according to the hand written price on the box. But must have decided to join the gun broker club and demand more due to putting a tag for $67.99 over the older price. ouch

West Coast Armory in Factoria wanted $50 a box for SS197SR. I laughed at them and left.

At $50+, you're better off buying EA.

Their ammunition is to tighter specs and hotter. Above that, it's fresher than '07.

Blue,

Don't forget there's 12 head stamped SS197 SR now, but I don't know how wide spread it is. I would still go with EA at $50 a box. One of these days after stuff calms down, I need to try out their ammo.

I noticed my local gun store posted an ad on backpage.com with SS195 for sale at $50 a box, this morning. This afternoon, I got a call from the owner of the gun store (yeah, I go there too much. apparantly he has my cell) asking me if I wanted to sell any of mine. He told me he brought his personal stash in and sold it all. I politely declined. Maybe I should cut a deal with him for restocking when the insanity dies down.

Me and my lady went to a LGS... was two boxes of ss197 on the shelf marked $34.99. He said they got 12 boxes in and that was the first 5.7 ammo they have seen since October. They were limiting one box per person... we obviously each bought a box. They also had a white site ps90 on consignment there for 1600.... didn't check to see if it had a gen 2 trigger pack because I did not have the money and it would have made me sick to walk away from it. They also had a NIB FDE FiveseveN. I did not get a chance to see if it was the "new" ones with the different slide cover or whatever because the place was crawling with people.

Oh yeah, for what its worth the ss197 I bought was head stamped 07 and has no indications of being LF (yay!).

Only the 12 head stamped 197 is LF. There will also be a sticker on the box stating so.

I was at a gun show in Grand Rapids, MI today. Saw two different people with 5.7x28 ammunition. One guy has what looked like most of a case of SS197 for $50/box. The other guy said he had a few boxes of 'blue tip' and a few boxes of 'full metal jacket' for $59.95/box. I have a little ammo already, and decided I don't need any more at those prices.

wow - long time no post. just got back from a deployment in the Caribbean, I left early December. Mind you, we have internet and cable when were in sat range, but I didn't bother keeping up with what was going on (ammo craziness). I knew it was getting bad before I left but damn; no idea until I actually when to my LGS when I got back...

only have 67rnds of SS197 left. tossed around the idea of selling my five seven, but after catching up on the forum and remembering how excited I was when I first purchased the gun, I've decided to keep it. On the other hand, I refuse to pay someone on gunbroker $0.99 per round. Just like you all I will ride out the storm, a years not gonna kill me if it takes that long to find ammo - have other toys to keep me occupied until then ^_^. I plan on checking my frequented sights every day and if I find stuff in stock I'll make it a note to post. thanks - steve

Good you were able to find some at a reasonable price. There's a place about 70 miles from me that has them for the same price 195/197 with a 4 box a day limit. Not worth the drive to go there daily. Will have to drive out that way again and see if they have a tactical for sale or see what they have for wheel guns when I'm in the area. I was only there for a few minutes when I picked up my 5.7. If I stayed there any longer I would have been broke.

Same. I have not had a chance to try the AE stuff yet, so I bought my 5 boxes. I then found the 500 round bundles from Luckygunner and bought 1 bundle to add to my stash. It's funny I have not even bought any ammo for my 40, as I only have 150 rounds, but yet I'm stocking up on 5.7 ammo. Guess you can tell what my favorite gun is. :D

I've only put a 100 rounds through it since I got it over a month ago and after all my ammo gets here, I'll have about 2300 rounds. Time to go shooting again. May have to sell my M&P 40 once I get my tactical, as the 40 wouldn't serve any purpose after that.

FedEx canceled the delivery for today, due to the snow we got. Should get it tomorrow. An extra day won't kill me :)

I just purchased 5 boxes of ammo for 42.00 a box at my FFL. I posted the info last week but no one seemed interested.

Yeah for $450.00 they darn well should be. I just got my two b/o's from Cabela's. Total of 750 rounds for $299.85. Shipping was FREE (ordered in mid-December during one of their specials).

Thanks for the heads-up. Luckygunner won't be getting any of my $$.

I know the price was high, but I wanted to go shooting, as well as try out the AE ammo. Killing 2 birds with one stone. I probably won't order from them again. I now have enough ammo to last me until panic prices go down.

If anyone in the Seattle, WA area really needs ammo and can't wait for the madness to die down, there were two dealers at the gunshow with SS197 and SS192. Both had about two cases worth. However, price was $80 a box.
