Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
New to the forum and looking for a couple of answers. Looking to get a 5.7 upper to be suppressed. I am looking at the 6" or 11" upper. The 6" mainly. Does anydody have experience with this suppressor? I have searched the forum up and down with no real answer. I have also seen many drawbacks to this upper including dented shoulders, buffer problems and suppressor overheating if inside the rail. Very interested in this upper but don't want to spend all this money and have all kind of problems.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Welcome to the forum!
First, let me say that I don't have experience with that can. I wanted one for my AR57 but couldn't find one anywhere. When I spoke to Gemtech they said that it is backordered until basically mid-year. I decided to go with a 12" barrel and a YHM Phantom 5.56 QD (to share with my AR15). I had to go with the 12" barrel because the can is over 1.25" in diameter and will not fit inside the rail.
Second, my cases come out dent-free for the most part. As far as buffer issues - I have had 0 (zero) FTFs or FTEs in over 800 rounds using: SS197, EA's ProtecTOR or EAs Trident rounds.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
I've got the gemtech 5.7 can, it sounds just fine on the FsN but I don't know if I would buy one for a rifle configuration. You'd be better off with a high end user-serviceable 22LR can that is rated for 5.7, or one of the newer smaller lighter titanium 5.56 suppressors.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
The only problem with the Gemtech FSN57 suppressor is the funky 1x10M threading.... meaning anything you want to shoot in .22LR has to be custom threaded or adapted.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Any time you put a can inside a rail its a bad idea. Yes it looks cool but will overheat. You can and barrel will get hot enough without enclosing it. Look cool or function? Thats the question :ponder:SeaHawkDriver-B wrote:The only problem with the Gemtech FSN57 suppressor is the funky 1x10M threading.... meaning anything you want to shoot in .22LR has to be custom threaded or adapted.

I don't follow you bones. A "can inside a rail"... maybe I'm just not familiar with the nomenclature.Bones wrote:Any time you put a can inside a rail its a bad idea. The handguards enclose the suppressor, Seahawkdriver.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Ohhhh, you're talking about on the PS90. Here I am thinking of the suppressor on a pistol... gotcha.
Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
It's my understanding that you should noy use the same can for centerfire and rimfire without cleaning because .22 being dirty. This somehow pushes the lead deposits with the higher heat and pressure from centerfire and crams it and packs the baffles. any thoughts?
Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Yeah the AR57 uppers are threaded 1/2x28, so unless you either special order a Gemtech 5.7 can, or use a thread adapter you are definitely going to be better off getting something else. You should look at the SWR Spectre.
Yes running high pressure center fire through a suppressor that you dumped a couple thousand rounds of 22lr is going to be a bad idea if you don't clean it first.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
I've called Gemtech on this issue, they don't reccomend cleaning their suppressors. There are no moving parts and the "dirtier" they are, the quiter they are, at least this is what they told me over the phone. Guy said that over the life of the suppressor, they will pick up an ounce or two in weight, but will just keep getting quieter.
Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Thanks for all the input guys. I am talking about a supressor strickly for the AR57 upper (model SAR57). It will not fit the FN 5.7 or the P90. On gemtech web site it is listed under the SMG and PDW Suppressors. I was just trying to see if anybody has experience with this suppressor. I emailed gemtech a couple days ago, but no response.
Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
I think you'll be more than happy with its performance on an AR57, and I am a Gemtech kinda guy, I just don't think it has a net value like some of the other cans out there that would do the same job.harvester wrote:Thanks for all the input guys. Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
Many other tests prove that to be wrong. You are gradually reducing the volume of the suppressor, how could it get quieter?SeaHawkDriver-B wrote:I've called Gemtech on this issue, they don't reccomend cleaning their suppressors. Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
There's a big difference between not cleaning a center fire rifle suppressor, and not cleaning a suppressor you have ran 22LR through.
Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
GONRA is interested in the new Ruger 22/45 with THREADED BARREL.
Bet you .22 Long Rifle pistol silencer experts out there can suggest
a Nice Supressor for this that can be DISASSEMBLED for cleaning.
Will NEVER get one unless I can TAKE IT APART for cleaning.
Thanx in advance...

Pretty sure all of Liberty's cans are user-serviceable (and priced well, to boot), they have a bunch of rimfire options.
You could also go with an integrally suppressed barrel. I know AWCs are user-serviceable, not sure about the others.

They are. As soon as I can get my hands on EA's threaded barrel, my Kodiak is going to live on my FsN.fooschnickens wrote:Pretty sure all of Liberty's cans are user-serviceable (and priced well, to boot), they have a bunch of rimfire options.
Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
I went with the with a AR57 12" barrel and a YHM Phantom 5.56 QD (to share with my AR15) also. Just getting everything together as we speak (AR57 upper arrived today). Out to the desert Saturday to test 40gr and 27.5gr FN Factory rounds - will post results next week. Plenty of good reloading info/data for doing 5.7 subsonic - if that's your game - well worth looking into. Subsonic in my AR15 with the YHM is a 'Whisper'. I'll be reloading some Sub 5.7 as soon as a make some empty casings (grin).

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
The threads sit inside the handguard so the QD and suppressor would have to fit in there and I know the OD of the YHM suppressor is too big. I think you are going to have to mill back the handguard.

Re: Gemtech SAR57 Suppressor
The 11" barrel has that problem. 57center fixed that by going with the 12" barrel. The YHM QD Phantom 5.56 works fine on my AR57 SBR.srt-4_jon wrote:The threads sit inside the handguard so the QD and suppressor would have to fit in there and I know the OD of the YHM suppressor is too big.
