5.7x28FN Snake Charmer!

Post by Big Ryan » 30 Dec 2008, 09:25

Well finaly got my new project all together...Ordered a New 20" SS Full Bull MGM 5.7x28FN barrel for my TC Contender..Coupled it with a TC survival stock and a bullberry forend with a straton hanger bar...Burris SS one piece scope base, the optics are a new KonusPro 3-9x40mm with the laser etched recticle. She kind of reminds me of the old snake charmer setups, very light weight and enough room in the stock for a few hundred rounds and a few odds and ends. Range report soon to follow.

That sir is awesome. For my current project, I need to pick your brain. What is the twist rate of the barrel? What loadings do you intend to run through the rifel. Do you think 20" is taking full advantage fps wise, or could a little more barrel add up to some more velocity?

I'm no expert, but I would think that with anything over 20" you wouldn't gain anything unless you used a dfferent powder type.

Turbobrick, My Twist rate is 1:14 and this barrel will shoot 35-55gr Hornady Vmaxs Excellent. I did some testing today and loaded the 40gr vamxs with 10.5gr of lilgun and a rem 7.5 small rifle primer, I was able to get a average string of 2716 FPS out of this barrel with no signs of pressure in the least..Im goin to Chrony the 45gr and 55gr this weekend and will post the results..I have to agree with the previous statement fro, jmz5, as I think 20" is about the max length for the round to get its max potential..Whats funny is I loaded my ruger 77/22 Hornet with a 24" barrel with 12.5gr of Lilgun, 2 full gr more then the 5.7 and I used the same 40gr bullet and I was only able to get 100fps more out of the hornet..So this load seems to be very efficent in the 5.7. 2gr more powder in the 22 hornet is not worth the measly 100fps more to me..Cheers, Ryan
