Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
well my Viridian X5L gen 2 finally came in after being jacked around by the dealer i ordered it from. Long story short it kept being put on "back order" even though i ordered it months ago with cash up front...
I can't say enough good things about this Tac light/laser combo. I had the streamlight tlr2 for almost 4 years and liked it a lot and don't have too many bad things to say about it either but this Viridian blows it away... It fits perfectly on the FsN like it was made for it, no play what so ever. I first tried it out at night and just started laughing i was so impressed. I was putting the laser on houses roofs that were 3 blocks away. Then I turned on the 160 lumen light and it completely lit up the entire back yard..With a very bright white light. Waaaaay brighter than the streamlight. I would have no problem temporarily blinding an unwanted intruder especially with the strobe mode. (has 6 modes + deep programming mode) The finish seems very solid and i like how they changed the battery location (cr123A) compared to the old X5L. It is now right behind the light housing so you can change batteries without messing with the zero of the laser. What I don't understand it how the laser is so much brighter than the TLR2, because they are both around 532nm the TLR2 may even be more. But this laser is so bright that at night you can actually see the whole beam not just the dot. I felt like i was cheating when i went to the range...I had a crowd of people watching this thing in action as i was able to completely destroy the bullseye until it was just one big hole.

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
Biggest complaint I have about the Gen 1 is the on/off button - smeggin thing can be stubborn as hell at times. #2 complaint is switching between modes, again probably due to stubborn buttons...
How's that one do?

It works flawlessly! Ambidextrous on/off and press both press both to cycle. It also has the memory so it knows which program I wanted it on and doesn't reset back to the first one. You can now go as far as changing the rate of which the light or laser strobes also. Definitely the most customizable. :thumb:

@Harold
I had good luck with optics planet when I ordered my tlr2 a while back but some people say to stay away from them so it might be hit or miss. I do know they just got a shipment of the gen 2 in though! I ended up
Just having my local gun dealer order mine because he's a close friend and got it $50 cheaper than anyone else
Thanks satellite I love the look it gave it! My fiancé saw it and goes " If I saw someone pull that out I'd turn around and start running! It's scary looking!"

Your 57 is beautiful. How have you gotten the safety, the takedown button, slide button, black? I like the color change. What slip on grip have you gotten?
I have ordered the laser too, mine has not come in yet. I cannot wait to try mine out.

Thanks Hoss! The all black model five seven is a special edition available through accusport or you can just get all the controls in black from FNH USA and swap them out.
The grip is a pachmayr model 2, which is something you will either love or hate I love how it gives it the extra width to the grip as well comfort.

Looks like my C5 with a bigger moon beam. Is that a fair estimation?

@vafrum
I'd say so. The C5 C5L and the X5L all use the same laser, 5mW peak 532nm Class IIIa Continuous wave. 1.2 mrad, approx. 0.5" at 50 feet. Up to 100 yards daylight, 2 miles at night. The only difference is the light output on the C5L and the X5L, with the C5L being made for compact guns it's going to be a lot smaller so there isn't enough room for the bigger light like the X5l :thumb:

I just got mine and put it on my OD Green FIve Seven. ANyone else having an issue with the unit only working right when you barely tighten the battery cap AKA the light? Mine won't work until I keep backing off the tightness and find a "sweet spot" then it works as advertised. However, I can't see it staying in the sweet spot when I start shooting. Funny thing, the dealer I bought it from at the Gun SHow said not to buy these online because his buddy bought two and both had the exact same issue I just described. I hope this isn't a failed bit. For $325 cash I was expecting a lot. I guess I will be calling Viridian Monday morning.

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
Seems like an improvement over what has been a market dominated by the way-overpriced surefire, and secondplace streamlight. Granted both those names have a solid reputation and I own a couple; however, it is my opninion that their companys' egos became way over-inflated by the mall ninjas and tacticool crowd that would pay literally ANYTHING for the "best of the best" tactical accessories. When surefire started charging more for their ridiculous flashlight than the cost of top-tier firearms, it was the last straw in my book.
Hopefully its only a matter of time before products like the Vred ,and others come along that match the quality of the other top two brands, and offer an even better product; after all, LED bulbs and civilian lasers aren't something that either Surefire or Streamlight invented or have the market corenred, they simply put it in a convenient package that mounted to an accessory rail, wrote the word 'tactical' on the side, and started selling them at a 3000% markup over production cost. Every chinese factory from here to Scheschwan Province makes LED bulbs and laser pointers.
The real question with the Vred is the quality control, if they get good reviews over the next year or so, I'll probably swap out to their units; however, it seems like even the Gen II's might be plauged with issues. Only time will tell if the abuse of shooting, heat and cold, moisture, etc, will short out the contacts or fry the boards in them.

Yeah, one of my C5 lasers will not work unless the battery cap is "just so". I plan on returning it.Deathmaster wrote:I just got mine and put it on my OD Green FIve Seven. The new C5L has auto on activation. Does the X5L II also have this feature?

I am not sure what you mean by auto activation. You press one of the buttons to turn it on and both buttons together to cycle through the modes once it is on.
I actually works perfectly as long as the battery lid is loose (too loose for me). I am actually a little pissed about it. If you look on Viridian's web site they talk about quality, testing and made in the USA. Like blueorisons said... how the hell could this thing leave their factory like this?? It would seriously have taken about 30 seconds to test it and see there was a problem. Now, I have a huge pain in the a$$ having to probably send it back and screw with it all. I sure the hell am not paying a bunch of shipping charges to get this thing working right. Say what you want about Surefire but after buying about 10 of them through the years they all worked perfectly out of the box! This Viridian ain't no Surefire I will tell you that and the price is too high IMO. Hell my cheap Fenix light worked perfectly out of the box. I am glad I am a civilian that wasn't trusing my life with this thing because I don't trust it as far as I can throw it right now.
I do feel better after calling Viridian this morning and finding out no one was available in customer service until 1/24.... NOT.
I will post a youtube video showing this problem which is apparently not too isolated. Stand-by.

Surefire weapon lights are a flat out ripoff.

I mean auto activation, and apparently you bought one that was produced before Dec 2012.Deathmaster wrote:I am not sure what you mean by auto activation. You press one of the buttons to turn it on and both buttons together to cycle through the modes once it is on.
The new ones all automatically turn themselves on when you draw the weapon.
I have no battery lid problems at all with my C5L.

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
In all fairness I need to give an update here. I got some feedback on youtube from someone saying to really tighten the hell out of the battery compartment and see if it worked then. So, i grabbed a scrap piece of rubber to grip it better and really tightened the hell out of the cap... as tight as I could get it without a tool and guess what? It worked!!!!! So, I guess the unit works fine- you just have to tighten the battery compartment like I have never done before.
I take back everything negative I said about Viridian. I have never seen anything that had to be so brutally tight to work but so be it. It works, it works!!!!

Good info.
Try shooting with it past 200-500 rounds, with EA mixed in. Hope it holds up.

I'll do it. I'd much rather it be tight as hell than loose and barely on there so I actually pretty sure it will be OK now. I will keep everyone up to date. It also looks great with my OD Green gun.blueorison wrote:Good info.

The laser itself is awesome. You can actually see this the green beam which is much different than with a red laser. Really a cool deal. The light is actually really bright too.

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
I had the exact same issue with my X5L gen2, but eventually figured out the same thing you did. The cap has to be tightened a little further than I would normally be comfortable with for the unit to work correctly, but once you figure that out it works flawlessly. If you take a look at the underside of the cap you can see why its necessary to get it into a certain position. There are pads underneath that must make contact with the two contact poles on the body of the light, and polarity must be observed, so that makes the circular position of the cap very important.Deathmaster wrote: I'll do it. Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
I have the X5l and have no issues with the Battery tightness. The cap is normally tight. The laser works great.....but are you a target by lighting up. My problem is I am afraid of over tightening the two mounting screws, I am afraid I will break the mount or damage the pistol mounting rail. My point of impact moves vertically. I have fired about 150 rounds.
Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
Hi,
Regarding the vertical POI shifting, on the FNH FiveseveN, the X5L Gen2 can be clamped with BOTH rail mount screws...just shove the unit forward and the second hole will line up. Utilizing both mount screws will greatly reduce the rocking. You will find that a small amount of movement remains due to the clearances in the body slots for the rail adapters and the two small allen screws cannot remove this wee bit of movement. Personally, I would prefer no movement but, I must take into consideration the nature of a "universal" mounting system that incorporates several different rail adapter designs. If all the weapon manufacturers produced ALL rails identically, there would be no issue. I don't consider the 5.7 a "target gun" so, as for me, I can accept the little movement remaining.
I had the same issue with the lamp "tightness" but discovered that a small amount of lube on the o-ring allows the lamp to screw down much easier and now seems near "normal" as far as tightness. The issue was discussed in Viridian's FAQ section and in a response to an email, they stated that they are working on a solution. There is some info there regarding the "instant-on" holster feature as well.
Here are some excerpts:

And a pic of two screws...Q. Why does my X5L gen 2 only work when I back the lens off?
A. The lens cap on the X5L gen 2 needs to be tightened "pickle jar tight" with the use of your hand to ensure proper battery contact when installing the lens onto the unit.
Q. How can I determine if my C5, C5L, X5L (Gen 2) or TacLoc holster is equipped with ECR Technology?
A. C5 - All C5 units with serial numbers beginning at or higher than C019860.
A. C5L - All C5L's with serial numbers beginning at or higher than C018000.
A. X5L (Gen 2) - All X5L (Gen 2) units with serial numbers beginning at or higher than X002830.
A. TacLoc holsters - look for the ECR logo on the product packaging.

Any Viridian owners (that have had them long enough) experience any battery drain issues? i.e. ever grab the viridian equiped firearm a couple months later only to find the CR123 dead?
Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
iv had my 2 gen for 5 months and its fine.... i dont got any issues... it sits next to my bed and i use it to play w my cat(i dont keep it loaded, so i wont shoot kitty). iv put about 250 rounds down w it. i had one problem. it was dim and i smacked it and never had an issue since.

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
I've got a gen 1 (hate the buttons, but like the looks better) and I've come to find it dead a couple times now. The first time I let it go telling myself perhaps I left it on or the original battery could have been old. But after installing a brand new battery and again finding it dead after a few months, I blame the unit. Viridian has offered to "look at it if I send it in", but I haven't done so yet.

So how exactly did this go down? You sent it in with X problem and they just looked at it, sent it back, and said "oh well"? Try using the 2 extra screw to tighten thing down. Might mar the finish on the rail where the screws come in contact.
I have 2 of the Gen. 2 and, obviouly, love them.
I use them on Sig 220, 229 DAK and HK USP.
I had to order an adapter for the USP because of the HK rail systom.
Didn't see your picture when I wrote this. Maybe use one screw in the remaining hole but it looks like you've done well. I always overtighten things with a screw driver and so I am always affraid of stripping something

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
I have a guy that's opening up shop here in town and he is selling these generation 2 x5l for 375 is that a good price its not the cheapest I've seen online but I hate buying stuff online unless its vital I like to go in the store pay, and leave with my new shoes on my feet. Know what I mean?
Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
They have them on amazon with prime shipping, and it's cheaper than most other places.
I have the C5L on my MP9C and it's awesome. like you, I've put the laser on houses farrrr away, and you will see it. it's amazing. and yeah, it's so bright, you can actually see the whole damn beam!
one thing I don't like is the operation of it though. sometimes I just want laser, sometimes I just want light, or strobe. with this, you have to set it to the mode you want with constantly clicking. I like with the TLRs that quick tap will put on the strobe, you don't have to go through 6 fricking modes to get where you need to. I wish like left button was laser, right button was strobe/laser or something.
oh, and my C5L kept draining it's own battery. it would last 2 weeks. I found out I wasn't alone on this, so I mailed mine in for warranty work. When I get a new one, I will have to re-zero it and hope for the best.
I really wanna get the X5L for my duty gun, but it's not a cheap combo to get (floats around X300, which I would never buy)
I set mine up for like 10 yards. I wouldn't use the laser at 25 yards or so, but it is very helpful at close distance work (like 10 yards) for police work. put the laser on them, and you can concentrate on other thigns like the radio and SA

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
do they plan of making a holster for the 57 with ECR?
Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
those guys over there need to make holsters for lefties before making more holsters!Lurkin wrote:do they plan of making a holster for the 57 with ECR?

Would you consider that X5L to be roughly same size as a TLR-2? I'm just asking because when I order a holster, i'd like it to clear this light. I dont htink TLR-1 will cut it. but TLR-2 might

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
Viridian: 2.84"L x 1.37"H x 1.45"W
TLR-2: 3.26"L x 1.83"H x 1.47"W
Viridian is shorter in length & height but about the same width although they are differently shaped. If you have it made for the TLR, it might work for the V - but just based on the shape, I wouldn't bet on it.

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fix stupid - it's just illegal.
Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
i'm hoping as long as it's a larger light, it will go in. duty holsters aren't like CCW kydex holsters, there is alot of play in them usually. (well not alot, but more compared to a CCW holster)Rapier1772 wrote:Viridian: 2.84"L x 1.37"H x 1.45"W

I did this on photoshop... from what it looks like, I might even get away with a TLR-1 style. that might actually work better

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
If they made an OWB and an IWB for the 5.7 I'd buy a X5L. The laser/light is great for the nightstand, but this is my EDC gun.
Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
Elite can make you a custom Kydex OWB holster for any light/laser combo you want. I got one made for the C5L. Its really nice.

Re: Viridian X5l (gen 2) with pics!
Don't mean to necropost, but I got mine today. Very impressed. The reason I was attracted to it wasn't for the looks or the cool green laser (though those are good selling points and I've bought things for sillier reasons), but the fact that this laser/light has the laser mounted ABOVE the light, making for less parallax. I assume most manufacturers (streamlight, surefire, eotech, insight) mount their lasers below for engineering reasons. The only other setup that I know of that would place a green laser above a decent power light would be a green unimax and a standalone light, which would be very bulky and I wasn't about to buy two things.
