I, Ripper by Stephen Hunter (author of the Bob Lee Swagger books, among others). A magnificent writer who delves into Jack the Ripper in an historical fiction style, but with two first person characters. Very well done.

Re: Power Banks
I have one and it works well. Just fully charge it before a trip. It has a BIG internal battery and will never fully charge from a computer USB port. Get the recommended charger - or one rated at least 2.5A at 5VDC.

Re: Completely unrelated
That's a common 0.100" spacing female header. May be used for wire jumper connections, plug-in socket for a male header for off-board wiring or a test point. Looking at the adjacent resistors and their values (3 X 1K), I'd guess that LEDs might connect via that header.

Re: Battery question
Saft. Intentionally chose the non-protected cells due to the application's temp range. The PTC devices don't like -30C with a pulsatile load. We used an external temp compensated circuit for protection.

Re: Battery question
WRT non-rechargeable Lithium D cells, I have had some experience. Have used them in extreme environments (near-space....120K ft). At -30C they can produce about 40%-50% of rated power. At typical ambient temperatures (25C), the capacity can be in the 13-15AH range. Some are available without an inte...

Re: What are you reading now?
Halfway through Philip Kerr's "Prague Fatale", just published. The latest in his Bernie Gunther series and, so far, very good. Historical fiction (WWII) and well written/contrived. In March 2000, I recall arriving at Macclesfield Station on a Virgin train from London and seeing a large banner attach...

Re: Where you draw the line
*WRT individuals judged to be suicidal or otherwise suspect, where is the trusted source on either side of the argument? Who decides what? Interval? Who provides the "I'm OK, now" sticker? There is a slippery slope any time a subjective evaluation is required/offered/defined. Interesting discourse. ...

And keep it in a safe, unloaded. Put a string tag on it showing a value of $10. Naahh. I saw a cooking show on Canadian TV years ago where James Barber suggested that upon asking a lady out for Dinner, arrive early and when she directs you to the fridge for a beer, do a quick recon and if there is n...

Finishing Alan Furst's "The Foreign Correspondent". Historical fiction, very different from the older Masters or, of late, Phillip Kerr, but prose beyond description - not just a command of language, but a deep 'sense' of it. Plays inside your head like Cormack McCarthy or, in music, like Richard Cl...

Re: Any electronics geeks?
SRI, been away from the keyboard. For a typical LED lamp of the ilk that which you indicated, at least 80% of the energy consumed by the device has to be dissipated as heat. In a tiny die, 800 mW is a LOT of heat. Nothing to do with the power source, but how does that tiny die/pkg dissipate that hea...

Re: Any electronics geeks?
Hi, Mike. **Mods if this should go PM or private, pls advise.** The information given at the eBay site is very sparse. Typically, I would expect to see a manufacturer's datasheet of many detailed pages with all sorts of luminosity charts and, certainly, an applications section dealing with heat tran...

Re: Any electronics geeks?
Mike, For a series configuration, the forward voltage Vf for each LED has to be added. That's 23.8 VDC total. Don't put those across an AC line source. The maximum reverse voltage for each is around 5 VDC and on each half-cycle, the array will see the instantaneous line voltage (nominal 117 VAC). On...

Re: Navy SEAL honored with warship
There are men that, called to their inner duty and trained beyond the limits that most of us can understand, accomplish things that border upon the unbelievable. Yet, they do it. Such men, rare in many, if not most cultures, seem to have an unstated purpose of "I live here". What can be said, other ...
