Post by cHaMeLeoN352 » 28 Jun 2012, 11:13

Does anyone know a good Collet puller for for the 5.7x28?

I wonder what EA uses?

Great!

Thanks guys! :thumb:

It was getting time consuming, making sure they aren't damaged with pliers...

Hehe...yah, just a few for dissection purposes.

I am starting to reload and want to save the vmax intact.

You need to be careful with those factory VMax rounds if you don't want to damage the bullet. FN glues the bullets in, so one trick you can use is to push the bullet IN to break the seal and then tighten the collet as loosely as it will let you w/o slippage. If you're looking for some cheap 40gr VMaxs EA sells 250 pulled bullets for $20.

I've noticed this. The first time I saw this deal I was so happy, but they were out of stock. Since I didn't know any better I waited for months, determined not to spend any more money for projectiles. After a long wait I finally just bought some other 40 grain z-max.

EA pull bullets has a big dent in it. It shoots big groups because of it

Are you sure it is due to the bullets? I've reloaded pulled bullets before & didn't notice any significant change in POI.

Really. Interesting.

Show me proof.

Do it.

You probably can't shoot or reload for crap. Just going to call that one. I'm not claiming match grade accuracy, but "big groups"?

Laughable. I say this because I've shot their pulled rounds.

A good idea is to push the bullet in first to break the glue like Grant advised.

I have loaded and shoot EA's pulled bullets and I can say I saw no big groups on my end :skep: take up target practice or better yet you might want to hire someone to properly teach you how to shot for accuracy :lmao: :p

When using factory vmax bullets I get much smaller group than EA pull bullets. Everything is the same but the pull bullets. Didn't you notice the dent where the bullet was pull? It looks like it is crushed. I don't know why they crush it so hard. It is cheaper but not worth it when it throws a pattern instead of a group.

I guess I don't shoot far enough; I'm sorry for my comment if I'm wrong. I only shoot to 25 yards and I got good groups.

Does anyone use an aftermarket glue or sealer when reloading the 5.7? I had a batch of ss190s once that had a purple translucent ring around the seat of the bullet.

WTF am I doing wrong?

I've pulled bullets before but never without ruining the case and/or the bullet. A couple of rounds here or there is no big deal but now I have a few hundred to pull so I really need to learn to do it properly.

Usually what happens is that I either crush the shoulder down or the collet tries to grip on the neck. No matter what I try, it never grips the bullet hard enough. I've watch a couple of videos but can't see where I am going wrong.

Any ideas?

Vote for Hornady.

I'm curious to see these dented bullets, and if someone has a couple, I'd be glad to put them up against some new Vmaxs at 200 yards and see if the group opens up. If they're dented, I'd assume it would.

Rapier, what are you using? How bout a video of you pulling, and we can see where you're having trouble. I've loaded way too hot on way too many expensive match bullets and had to pull them down. I get a scratchy circle on them, and longitudinal scratches where they were seated, but they still fly straight.

I use the hornady collet puller. As for the vid, I'll see what I can do.

I had a batch of SS197 that gave me issues. What I ended up doing was to close the collet down completely then run the bullets up to break the seal. I then pulled them like normal. And that is using the hornady collet puller.

These are my reloads that need to be pulled down, there is no sealant or glue, not even a crimp. But they still don't come out easy.

I had trouble pulling bullets with my Hornady thing the first few times, but once I got it figured out, they all come out like butter now. What really helped was burying the Hornady doo dad in the top of the press so it poked way down, then installing Hornady's LED press light on my rockchucker. Now I can see exactly where the Hornady thing grabs the bullet, pull on the lever a bit, and move the ram slowly. If the bullet's not moving, I just restart and go again.

That is very odd without even those things. Is it the right size collet? Otherwise the only other thing that comes to mind is just the setup.

Should always be your first thought. Is there gas in it? Is the doo dad operating correctly? Did I turn the oven off? After that, whatever's left is the answer. What I'm saying is, go put some gas in your oven, adjust your doo dad, and everything will be fine.

Nope. They will group just fine. Boundary air layer affect makes pull marks irrelevant.

Finally got around to fiddling with the doo dad & you were right, it was the doo dad. Cinched it down with a round in it, back it off just enough to release the round, & now it works like it oughta. Thanks.
