Re: Charges of 'Stolen Valor'
Here is a similar thing going on here at ISU now.
This guy http://www.facebook.com/unmeilleurreve?ref=nf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Is parading around in a marine corps dress blue jacket which he told one person that he got from a marine throwing his uniform away but told the school that he bought at an army surplus store. He is parading in front of the Vet Sanctuary deliberately trying to provoke a response.
He was confronted by several people telling him he needs to take it off & he immediately contacted the ACLU. He wants to be a martyr for this. We are gathering documentation about laws & codes to force down the throats of anyone who doesn't want to help. We are also contacting the Marine Corps League, VSO, and many others.
We also have one guy here was Force Recon & he is still hard core. If he sees this idiot, it will get ugly.

Let the Force Recon fella at him. Or maybe steer a bus over him. Just try not to scuff the jacket.Rapier1772 wrote:Here is a similar thing going on here at ISU now.

Oh and I forgot to mention, he has put it has anarchy signs on it.
We do not want FR to get hold of him. It will reflect badly on the veterans.
I just found out there is a retired Sargent Major in town. We called him & he called the Commandant of the Marine Corp.

True, it wouldn't be seen as "Veteran teaches punk bastard some respect" like it ought to be, rather "Crazed Marine attacks college activist" :facepalm:Rapier1772 wrote:We do not want FR to get hold of him. It will reflect badly on the veterans.

Re: Charges of 'Stolen Valor'
Well, I have certain thoughts myself, but alas,...I'm torn.
There are certain things that just SHOULDN'T be defaced.
Old Glory.
The Bible.
Military Uniforms.
Headstones.
HOWEVER...the argument has been made, and I have to agree with them, if you BUY YOUR OWN flag, Bible, uniform, etc, then it is your own property and you can do whatever the hell you want with it. Wear it, burn it, drape it over your windows or wrap it around a wet dog...it's YOURS.
HOWEVER (again) if you do something with it with the INTENT of antagonizing others, then you get what you deserve! If you wear a Marine uniform and are running your mouth to a Force Recon? Hahaha, brother, you deserve to lose some teeth!

Re: Charges of 'Stolen Valor'
Fly, the only thing about what you said is that we actually have found two laws(?) in the US Codes that deal with the civilian wearing of military uniform items, whether you buy it yourself or not. Freedom of speech doesn't protect you if you are violating laws to do whatever it is you're doing. Typically, military personnel & veterans don't get too riled because, usually speaking, people aren't aware of the rules and/or they're not trying to be douches.
This person has stated to people (no one with any kind of official power though) that he is wearing it to "protest the institution" aka the military. He is hoping for a violent response.
Luckily he hasn't met the Force Recon guy yet. The day he does, I think losing teeth will be the least of his concerns... :skep:

Re: Charges of 'Stolen Valor'
But didn't we used to have laws about defacing the flag? At least, until the Supreme Court decided it was 'free speech' to do what you wanted? Thereby making the 'law' null and void?
I'm just asking, as I'm not sure. I just seem to recall when I was a wee little lad being taught that it was against the law to deface the flag. Then when I was a bit older, being told that 'those dadgummed idiots on the supreme court' said...
They may well have done the same thing since with uniforms.
I seem to recall that they did the same thing recently with the original 'Stolen Valor' law and made it to where any butt-head can claim to be a war hero and its 'protected free speech'.

Re: Charges of 'Stolen Valor'
Does Texas have special laws for stolen valor? I thought it was deemed legal on a federal level but unsure of state by state laws :ponder: I've also seen where it is only illegal if there is a benefit (of any kind) to the imposter.

EDIT: Found that it is illegal if the poser benefits from the act in any way. Even a discount on coffee will earn the poser a trip to Gray Bar Motel. :thumb:Gonzalez was booked into the Parker County Jail and was released Sunday after posting $18,500 bail. He faces charges of theft, tampering with a government document and fraudulent or fictitious military record.

Re: Charges of 'Stolen Valor'
You know...based on the knowledge base of most of these idiots, I'm really a bit surprised some asshat hasn't tried wearing a redcoat uniform and playing it off as 'dress blues'...
Yeah...see what I did there?
