I treated myself to a custom made hunting knife

Post by Virginian » 25 Aug 2012, 10:15

I saw this fellow's work on another forum, so I contacted him to make me a knife to my specs. Here's what he came up with and believe it or not, this was the third knife he had ever made. I almost feelguilty using it in the field but I always wanted a nice knife just once in my life. I'm quite sure it will out live me.

The knife is 8 3/4" OAL, O1 tool steel blade, with brass pins and bolster and oak burl. When I ordered it, I asked him to make the blade a thin as possible, think scalpel. I've skinned 27 white tail with it so far and love it. It also came with a hand made sheath that's a basket weave print soaked in wax. I don't wear it much in the field because when I sit down in a deer stand, the sheath is the first thing to dig in. So I leave it at camp till I return, hopefully with some game in tow.

Holy ****! Seriously? Only the third he'd ever made??
I have to ask, how much did he charge, because I'm thinking Xmas.
Is that his name on the blade or does he engrave the buyers name?

I ordered from a fellow on rimfirecentral.com. Yes, his name is Gary Dukeman and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Here's a more recent knife he finished. He goes by the name of SQUAWSACH.

I'll pm you what I paid.

Thanks for the kind words.

Thank you but I figure when I'm gone, I'll let the next guy worry about it. ;)

This. Virginian, thanks for sharing that with us.

27 is my favourite number; incidentally, OMYGOODNESS 27 WHITE TAIL HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THIS KNIFE?!

Venison is my favourite common meat.

Thanks, very kind of you. I've had this knife for about two years, or I should say two deer seasons.

Va is overrun with whitetail so you can pretty much buy as many stamps as you like. 2 each season goes to my fridge and family & friends. The rest go to hunters for the hungry program. I feels good about what I'm doing each season as silly as this sounds.

That knife looks amazing. Another venison lover here too! Been known for trading jerky for gold memberships...

I actually haven't heard anything in that regard. I bought a knife from them about 5-6 years ago and it was pretty nice. Sadly, I dont know where it is now :(

Did he retire?

Wow! What a beautiful knife. I particularly like the utilitarian design - very versatile in the field - plus the choice of handle wood, and the file work. What a beauty! It's said that a thing of beauty is its own excuse for being. I think that applies doubly to really fine and beautiful knives.
