The Tactical Search Function

Post by Rapier1772 » 20 Dec 2011, 00:16

Yes, the search function was renamed "Tactical Search" as part of a joke but the information herein is true.

There is a lot of data already on the forum and if you’re in this thread, then you’ve either seen the infamous “use the search function” or you are trying to keep from seeing it. Either way, here’s what you need to know. One extra note: the search function can be used by members & non-members alike.

The google method:
You can use Google to search a website, our forum in this case.
Go to http://www.google.com. In the text window, type (or copy/paste) “site: fivesevenforum.com ” and then what you are searching for (e.g. “trigger”) – it will show a small preview of the post under the hyperlink & if you click on it, that thread will be displayed.

The forum search:
In the upper right corner of the screen there is a small text window with “Tactical Search…” written in it

Click on that & type in what you want to find & then press enter or click on the large magnifying glass to the right.

NOTE: Use quotation marks (") to search for something specifically - i.e. Blue dot vs "Blue dot"
The first returns results that match Blue and/or dot, the second returns results with "Blue" & "dot" in the post.
OR
On the right of that text box is a gear looking thing.
It will bring up a webpage with more options to filter/refine your search. The keyword is required but the rest is optional. You can search using additional information such as
• Author (if you know who wrote the post)
• What forum to look in (i.e. if it is for reloading, select the reloading forum)
• Time frame since post (days, weeks, months)
• Just search the thread title for the keyword, just search the posts, or search both

In addition you can choose how to display the information & how much of the post to display.

But wait! That's not all! :D
Let’s say you searched for “trigger” & there are thousands of posts in the results. Just above the search results & off to the left, there is another text window.

You can further narrow your search by typing additional keywords in. You can do that as many times as you want. However, there are some words that will be ignored because they are too short or too common. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards [which are asterisks (*)].

No matter which way you chose, be sure you try alternate spellings - such as “bluetips” instead of “blue tips” or “32 grain” instead of “32gr.” Using the wildcards (*) will search for words with variations before or after the keyword. For instance, searching for "machin*" will return machin, machine, machines, machinery, machinist, machinists... You get the idea. You can also put the wildcard at the start or middle of a keyword.

As an added bonus, this might help with seeing new posts:
Try clicking on "View active topics" (top of page, "Quick links" drop down menu) which will bring up a list of the recently posted in topics whether you have read them or not, the list usually spans a few days.
You can also click on "View unread posts" instead of "View new posts". I'm not sure what the time frame is for 'new' posts but clicking 'unread' will bring up everything you haven't read. Right now (assuming you're new), that will be a lot of threads so go to the board index screen (link top right) there is a "mark forums read". If you click it, this will make it so the next time you click "View unread posts", every thread which has something new in it will show up (but if you go to "unread" right away, nothing will show).

Good luck & thank you for choosing the ultimate in Tactical Search Functions!
