SS192 Ammo is it worth it?

Post by Scar_Shooter » 06 Feb 2014, 12:02

I have the opportunity to purchase 250 rounds of SS192 new sealed boxes. Having just scored some SS198 for $31.99 per box is the SS192 worth the $70+ per box of 50rnds price tag? My understanding is that the SS192 should be better for long term storage (lead free), but the SS198 is the hotter round.

I would not pay that much for 192.
There has been a lot of debate over whether the lead free has a shelf-life or not. Plenty of people swear it exists while others claim there isn't sufficient evidence.
I would love to get some so I can pull them down & reload to my specs (cannot find the 28gr projectile to reload) but there is no way I would pay $70/box for it, the most I'd pay is $40/box for 192.

Does the SS192 have any significant advantages over the SS198?

Not really. 198 has the LF primer & 198 is a faster bullet. 192 isn't restricted to LEO/MIL whereas 198 is by FNH (Not restricted by BATFE)

For defense ammo I say just keep checking EA's webpage, it's rare but they do occasionally get to put some up. Their ammo is better than anything the factory shells out anyway.

I'm surprised by ppl selling SS192 & other ppl buying it for that price point. Unless just the simple fact that you can't get it new anymore at least in this country. What do you think the reasoning is that FN restricts the SS198 to LEO/MIL only, as JHP is readily available for almost every other caliber round?

I have to talk to Jay about Accurizing my MKII & will check on the EA ammo, as I've been looking, but not about to pay $200 on Gun Broker.

Mostly because it's a discontinued round & they aren't smart enough to compare the stats.

FNH restricts the 198 because it is a little faster & IIRC the extra speed is enough to make it pass the test for armor piercing (light body armor only).

I pull my ss195 bullets. I take the lead free primer out and dump the powder out. I even did so with 4 white boxes of ss195 because my reloads are going 2370 FPS. I believe thats only about 75 feet per second behind S4M. Since I Bought Them a long time ago it cost me about 18 bucks a box to reload them. If i did get a chance to get some ss198LF I would pull them and reload them as well. I also had one brown box of sealed ss192 i also pulled them and reloaded them. It took me a while to figure out the potential of the 28 grain bullet. I definitely dont see it coming back for civilians.

I would love to buy some buffman. Im here in Idaho they have a bunch of Federal and ss197. The last place I saw ss195 was at my buddy's gun shop about June of 2012. I have not seen it since but I did talk to FNH customer service and they say they still manufacture it. I find it hard to believe though because I havent seen it in 2 years!!!

I was just reading the threads about the ss192 ammo, would it be considered collectible in any way?

It is to some people. The rounds are a little harder to find (hardly in any stores) & some people are collecting all the various 5.7 rounds all the time.

But since you can go on places like gunbroker & still find them pretty easy, I wouldn't call it a collectible just yet. But that's my non-collecting opinion :)

ok, i was just wondering because i just picked up 6 boxes for my collection and i was tempted to go on gunbroker and buy it $89.99 which was a little more than i wanted to spend but then someone had contacted me from fgt saying they had some. im still looking for some of the ss190 and L191 and even the sb193 but the prices are getting insane for it.

it doesnt seem like a lot of people here in south florida if they have a fn 5.7 or any firearm that fires the 5.7x28 round really collect the ammo. they usually just buy and flip

I don't go for those fancy FNH factory rounds. I reload or go EA.

Where can I hget the specs to reload my 5.7 cases? I have collected well over 3500 rounds & have a Dillon RL 550B. Everyone tells me 5.7 cannot be reloaded! Any help/direction would be GREATLY appreciated!!

The search function on this forum works, or you can click on the reloading section of the forum :)

At the height of the plandemic I sold all my ss192 for around $6 a shot.
Not sad to see it go considering I bought it for around $1.25 a shot in 2018.
Only regret is that I didn't buy it all when I saw it.
Luckily I never shot any of it.
I got to the point where I was like "I can't get any more of it", "even if i did buy more it would be so expensive I'm not going to target practice with it", so why even have it?
