UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
I know someone mentioned this somewhere on the forum, but Hickcok 45 got a hold of one to play with. I don't know if it is commercially available or not, but if it is... imma git me one of these instead of a KSG!!!

It is commercially available. Most I've seen are around $1000

That thing belongs in a movie and that's where it should stay...
I prefer my saiga-12 personally, but as an alternative to the KSG, I would take a look at the 1216; if you haven't already.
Here is a video displaying its function:

It's just that after my experience with my PMR-30, I am really leery of KT now. I know that I probably just got a lemon, but after 2 unsuccessful trips to be repaired, I gotta wonder.Buffman wrote:The ksg is more compact but I do like the uts
The UTS 15 seemed to work flawlessly in this particular video, so that's on step ahead of KT as far as I'm concerned.

Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
I don't think I've seen any major complaints with the ksg. Though I think I've read about malfunctions that you have to tear the gun apart to fix? I like how you can open the rear on the UTS.

If you mean my personal PMR... no. I'm too disillusioned to send it back for a third time.

Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
The loading looks to more cumbersome than the KSG. Also, it ejects to the right which, from what I've read, comes out under your chin if you're a lefty. The KSG ejects straight down like the PS90; I've heard that it can hit your arm when ejecting & can bruise/cut your arm. I have an idea for that but would have to fondle a KSG to know if it is has a chance at working.
UTS' tube selection on top? That doesn't make much sense to me. Auto alternating is good if you have the same loads but trying to keep track of which round you are using in a "firefight" or just rapid fire drills? Not likely.
KSG is still ahead IMHO.

Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
I have a Saiga 12.
Seen the UTS.
Seen the KSG.
1216 is new to me.
Saiga has beter mag changes than the 1216.
KSG is simpler than the UTS.
UTS is built better than the KSG.
There's a roto-mag thing out there for standard pumps.
Saiga wins, but I'd trade my Saiga for a KSG simply because it's not a semiauto.

May I ask why you prefer non-semi for that kind of a shotgun?Mister Freeze wrote:I'd trade my Saiga for a KSG simply because it's not a semiauto.

The only shotguns I've owned are semi. I'll never get a pump.

Reliability. The Saiga is tough as nails, but pumps are just more reliable.Rapier1772 wrote:May I ask why you prefer non-semi for that kind of a shotgun?Mister Freeze wrote:I'd trade my Saiga for a KSG simply because it's not a semiauto.
Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
Is your carry gun also a revolver? They are more reliable than a semi
Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
Common knowledge that pump action shotguns feed more reliably than semi-auto shotguns. No need to piss against the wind on this fact.

No, but I am in the market for a 3" stainless .357Mag for the same reason...srt-4_jon wrote:Is your carry gun also a revolver? They are more reliable than a semi
The nature of 12gauge shells; soft and not tapered, makes them MUCH more prone to feed problems in a semi. Nature of the beast. My S12 is solid, and if I could have both, I definitely would.

Very interesting. I have shot my uncles KSG, not bad. But it just doesn't feel reliable and I'm with Jgreenburg, I dont know if I trust KT.
Have to see if my shop is getting in any of the alternatives.

Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
Crap! I wish I had not watched the video. The UTAS UTS-15 gives me a woody. Now I am going to have to learn how to reload shotgun shells.
Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
How does it feed more reliably? They both pop a shell into the carrier, they both ride a shell up the lift gate, they both close the bolt on a shell riding on a lift gate. One just does it automatically while the other requires the shooter to rack it. Is there something I'm missing in the feeding process between the two of them?fd57 wrote:Common knowledge that pump action shotguns feed more reliably than semi-auto shotguns. Speed, mostly, and the Saiga, at least, has no lift gate.

Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
Here is a direct comparison of the UTS-15 vs KSG: the guy needs to learn how to shoulder a weapon though...so take what you can and leave the rest.
I will say, it makes me nervous how the feed chambers are exposed to the elements, simply opens the weapon's action to dirt and grime.
After seeing the following video, I believe in the KSG platforms reliability/durability and function under duress.

Very rough loading and cycling pump. Hate the switch mag switch. My Aunt would sometimes not rack fully so the spent shell wouldn't get ejected and new she'll wouldn't feed.
I rack my pumps pretty assertively, given the crappy Mossbergs we had in the Navy and not as crappy but equally cheap 870 shorties, so I didn't have trouble other than I noticed the stiffness of the whole process.
Put it this way, I was going to buy one but after shooting I decided to wait for them to work out bugs on next version or go another route.

So fare as long as I feed it 3 inch shells my AR12 MK1919 has really kicked ass. Totally reliable and man can you empty it fast.

Re: UTAS UTS-15 an alternative to the KT KSG?
I just dropped by one of the local fun shops, guess what they had? KSG!
It wasn't for sale but they let you fondle it.
I racked it a few times, played with the tube switch thing & did a cursory lookey lookey.
I like it.
Ergonomics we're good, nice fit (for me).
It wasn't as difficult to rack the the gun as these vids & reviews had me thinking.
Manipulating the tube selector switch wasn't quite as easy as I originally thought but also not difficult; a little practice should make a difference.
I do think they could do better with the round count slots.
As for the ejected rounds hitting the arm - I didn't get to load/eject any rounds but from what I saw, using a slight chicken wing position would move my arm far enough out of the way so that it wouldn't be an issue. I looked to see if my earlier idea about dealing with spent shells would work - I still think it would but it may also interfere with loading so chicken wing is a better solution until such time as I have one to test/experiment with.
The position for the slide release was perfect IMHO.
I wasn't too fond of the vertical foregrip they did had on it but that may have just been where they had it. Maybe I could switch my AR's AFG out for a grip-pod & put the AFG on the KSG? But that would be hard to put a light on... :ponder:
That's about all I can say without actually firing one Now to see if anyone around here has the UTS... :ponder:

I finally saw an UTAS & got to check it out.
Pros & cons to both KSG & UTAS but overall, I prefer the KSG.
Bear in mind that I haven't gotten to actually shoot either of them yet, just some in store fondling.
