Help Me Not Get a .45 Tactical

Post by 57js » 05 Mar 2012, 17:50

I have looked into the FNP-45 Tactical for some time. While I like that gun, I am not too sure it is the gun for me. While I have several guns, I don't own any .45s. I am not too sure I want to have yet another round I need to stock up on though I do like the FNP45. I am also not too fond up spending about $1k on the gun though the gun does have a lot going for it.

I have resisted for the last six months. Help me talk me out of buying one. I am just about to buy a FDE model on an auction, but I keep stepping back.

Thank you.

Here's why you shouldn't buy one: You'll spend more money eventually on a MRD (because it is just too easy to mount one on this gun), you will hang some expensive laser/light on the rail (just because you can) and finally, you'll end up with a suppressor (because you just can't justify having a threaded barrel and not using one).

It's just too much money for all that awesomeness.

You asked for a favor and help to be dissuaded from purchasing the FN Tactical.

So I will try.

Don't buy it. It's expensive and unless you are going to spend more unnecessary money on an optic to mount, you are wasting more money and making it an overpriced FNP/X which you can obtain for a measly 500$ or close to it.

But you don't want the FNP/X in .45. You don't want the .45 cartridge, at all. You might want it because it looks cool. You'll take a lot of pictures of it, shoot it a few times, and put it in your safe, after the novelty wears off. Then you will hope the novelty will arrive again, by not looking at it or shooting it for a while.

Perhaps the attention from friends gushing over it might help you feel better about spending the money on it and rarely shooting it. But that is one of the few faux-justifications you will eagerly seek for, once you spend that money.

However, if you really need one for a reason such as competition, hunting (you can hunt with other calibers, so I can't think of why it would be a reason), or otherwise, it is a solid .45 to mount an optic on, as it is already designed and milled for such. However, you did state that you don't want the .45 caliber to add to your collection.

:cya:

I hope I was able to satisfy what you had requested.

I have never been disappointed with a gun I have purchased. If you like the way it feels and operates, and it isn't taking food off the kiddies table, I won't be the one talking you out of it.

Thanks. That did it. After seeing the previous post with the pictures I was wondering what I was doing asking you guys for help, but this did it. I have enough calibers to keep me busy, and I don't shoot competition right now or hunt. No real reason to own a .45. No reason whatsoever, none. No reason at all for a nice .45. Oh no.

I am just delaying the inevitable, but I am definitely going to pass on the gun. Just to make sure I don't spend any money on it, I will spend it in my retirement account. Maybe when I am 70 1/2 and I pull the money out I will splurge. :)

I haven't been disappointed in any purchase either, but I would probably have an easier time if the gun was $500 instead of $1000. Plus the price of .45 which I don't have. Oh well, I waited this long for a .45, I can continue to wait since I don't see a pressing need for that gun or caliber.

How many times have you really had a pressing need for a hand gun compaired to the "OOOH... That thing is awesome... I WANT IT"... :)

maybe im looking at this wrong.... i acctually went to the range and shot the 45. and i judge how well guns will hold up based on what i see at the rental section("use and abuse"). the 45 was one of the worst rental guns iv shot. everything was just loose on it. and iv shot 2 different ones at 2 different ranges. im scared of my 57 being plastic and how it will hold up in the future(i shot the 45 after i bought my 57). shotting the 45 did not make me feel any better about my 57.

David, that's not a bad way to review a gun. I kinda do the same with the hundred rental cars a year that I rent. I can't speak to the FN 45, but I might be able to help on the FsN. I have 3 of them, but only one that I really shoot. I bought it in 2004 and have put many thousands of rounds through it. It is as tight as the day I bought it, but the trigger is a little better now. I might let Elite work on the triggers of the 2 newer ones to save me the time and expense of many thousands of rounds, but I might not. It was fun getting there. I have numerous other guns that got "rattly" as they wore, but it hasn't been the case with my FsN.

That is true. That explains my very first gun...the FsN. That also explains my last gun, the Colt Delta Elite though it was a little easier to justify since I already had a 10mm so I didn't have to go stock up on more ammunition.

The FN is a nice gun though.

57js, glad I was able to help. Often, my honest outlook on things offend many people and resounds harshly in their ears.

I very much like the FN TAC .45. I've shot quite a few of them, in different configurations. What some people who might favor tight "fit and finish" on their 1911's might not understand in firearms is that in combat firearms, or even in standard "for public use" firearms, a tight fit and finish often creates an environment in which there is a low tolerance for dirt, pressure, etc.

FN makes combat handguns. These handguns need to be loose in the right areas, to avoid them from jamming in a harsher-than-your-safe environment. :)

As a parallel, I have seen many match 1911-style platforms fail in the Texas fine-grit sand. This includes top-of-the-line guns from high-end mfg.'s.

One of the companies at SHOT this year also produces combat/match firearms. They take match-grade components and loosen them in key areas where dirt and grit might insert themselves, to avoid failure. I have tested their billet carbine-line and less thoroughly, their pistol line at private and public ranges. They work.

Thanks to you guys, I was successful in not purchasing a FNP-45 Tactical. The special price expired, and now the price went up quite a bit so it is now an obvious choice not to buy it. I suspect at some point I will think of a .45 again, but I won't be buying one anytime soon. I liked the way the FN felt in my hands so if at some point I actually decide to buy a .45, it will mostly like be a FN.

That's good. Glad you were able to avoid the temptation. Now if you live in South Carolina... you're screwed... cuz the price is just too good to resist...

Been thinking of one too. but I already have 2 .45s and one is a mk23, which pretty much is the same breed, except it's huge (and I love it!)

I think I'm gonna spend my $$$ on a desert eagle instead :)

Everyone should own an FNP Tactical .45acp + an HK UPS Compact Tactical .45acp. Period. One with RMR, one w/o.

If you're into .45's, I think those two are great options.

Although, I would have to disagree with you on the HK. I like the HK45's. Not so much the "UPS" compact, as it is too bulky to be a real "compact", and the HK45 handles better for me. Or, if you want to go full USP/UPS, then I would get a USP Expert. I prefer the balance of it, as the heavier muzzle offsets the fully-loaded .45 magazine.
