50 Gr Combined Ballistics Load

Post by Toaster » 16 Jan 2017, 15:40

Started with:

50gr Hornady Red Tips
Ramshot True Blue 4.0-4.5-5.0
No Chrono

4.0 were slow ejecting.
4.5 were strong ejecting.
5.0 was firmer recoil, starting to mark the primer up, Flat/crater

Loaded all 1x brass with 5.0 TB and the 50 grain bullet. It was only a touch longer, so I figured I had enough wiggle room to increase the pressure.

All fired extremely well, no issues at all. Some with rings around the neck. Some I graphite tumbled finished bullet to see if any help with feeding. But there was no issues at all with either batch.

Brass Prep:

Quick SimpleGreen/Warm water rinse
Resize/Decap
Primer Pocket Brush/Uniform
Neck Trim/3way
UltraSonic wash
Inspect/Case Gauge
Sort by Weight/Firings

Prime
Powder
Bullet

Case Gauge
Final Assembly Weight (I like all projectiles within 1 grain. I'll pull the out-liars)

All turned out good. I think other powders might be better for it, they were relatively low volume, and the necks didnt seem too happy.

I'll upload the fired brass in bit.

Did you work up loads in half-grain increments?

Reloading without a chrono is like reloading without a scale, especially with the 5.7

Yes I did, and this was the first cartridge I ever reloaded by myself. So ha!

I had a good idea where I was going to ~5.0gr. I had read plenty of other people's loads around a similar weight, and EA uses this bullet.

It isn't my first time dealing with precision though, I'm a biochemist and a mechanic in real life.

I watched the brass just like a sparkplug, assembled with the care of a test sample. Checking primers, necks, ejection. Fired the first time with a welding glove, heavy clothes and a safety team standing by ;P

^^I think these are the 197s.. Notice the uneven neck movement on even the 197s, I noticed my loads were MORE consistent, and accurate.

These were the graphite coated, notice the ring on the pencil shell.

The Silver primers are all OE 197 loads

The Graphite really makes the ring easier to see. No weird primers

I take care in the things I do, I'm not one to get in a rush or half-ass stuff. I do my reading and try to keep myself out of trouble.

His loads aren't unsafe otherwise I would say something.

Nice work Toaster. I have been loading 5.7 for about a year now, and have worked up some loads similar to yours. Your pics give me some ideas for my own QC that I will add to my practice. FWIW, I use a chrono to test my loads, but based on the data in this website, virtually all of the loads have come out where I estimated they would. It's nice to have all this data, and Jay looking over.

Didn't say the loads were unsafe, just don't agree with the method.

How about this load he posted “on the other board”....

Subsonic, usually cycles,

45 grain tracer, ~3.0 grain trail boss (doughnut powder)

It is just lightly compressed,

3.6 gn, or full to the brim, seems to work best. Pretty compressed, but whatever...

Some crack above sonic, but usually not.

Cheap projectiles, easy-to-not-double-charge powder. Quiet, fun
