Optimal 5.7x28 Load

Post by Localizer » 28 Sep 2016, 16:23

All,

What is the concensus? Is it better to shoot the lighter bullets at high vel, the mid weights at mid or heavy slower?

For instance:

36gr Barnes VG @ 2000-2080ft/s

40gr Vmax @ 1900-2000ft/s+

52 gr HPBT @ 1600-1800 ft/s

What is/are advantages of each?

All my research has brought me back to the SS195/198 bullet being handloaded to higher velocities than FN loads it. If you don't hand load, you can get them loaded hotter from EA. If you do, buy some, pull them down, load them back up with a hotness. There are other opinions on this, but for me the fact is that you're starting with a small diameter bullet, and even at 100% expansion, you're still only at a .44. 9mm carries similar energy, but will expand up near .70". The 195 bullet is long, and it'll tumble, and then it cuts a swath closer to .75". Same principle behind bullets like the 5.56 SOST and Mk262. It's also fast, which is something very few pistols can do as well as the FsN.

Lighter is always better in the 5.7 since it uses speed to do all it's work.

As far as commercial off the shelf projectiles that are available in bulk (not ss195 or T6B) what you consider to be the best performing lightweight .224 for the FSN?

Any of the 40gr Ballistic tips works best. Years ago I used the V-Max for the Pro1. Now I use the Nosler 40gr Var since it's jacket is thinner and does more damage at FsN velocities.

The 35gr Nosler Lead Free is showing great potential also.
