Has anyone used Unique?

Post by DoubleJ » 22 Nov 2014, 15:04

Has anyone done any testing with Unique? I got some load data from a friend using it for 55gr bullets, but we can't verify who developed the data, and it makes me nervous to be the developer. I know burn rates don't mean much, but some charts show it as being as fast as AA2, while other place it dead center between known good powders like Blue Dot, HS-7, True Blue, etc. It's cheap and I have a lot of it for 45s and 38s, plus the data I've got shows only needing around 4+ grains of it. Let me know if any of you have played with it, thanks.

I have not heard of anyone using it. I have just heard the burn rate is to fast.

There is a little data on this site, use the search function. Also an article that was published in Guns and Ammo. Http:/archives.gunsandammo.com/content/5.7x28-fn They listed a a 40 gr. Berger moly with a start of 3.5 gr and max of 4.3.

I use it for 45 auto and tried it for 5.7, but found the metering out of my Dillon 550 was not capable at that low of charge with the flake powder. Whether it was particle size/shape or static electricity I never determined. Ther's a lot of phooey about burn rates, this cartidge can be loaded with a broad range of powders, many are not ideal, but they will still work. The gold standard seems to be True Blue, so finding a powder in that burn range would be a good place to start.

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't go anywhere. A search on G&A's site for 5.7x28 also turns up no results. A search on this forum does not turn up any data that I was able to locate. A search on the massive search engine Google also turns up a lack of actual load data, hence my request for verified data on this forum. I'm aware the gold standard is now True Blue, as HS-7 was back in the day. I have both, as well as Blue Dot, Longshot, Silhouette, and CFE-P. I just happen to have 6# of Unique, it's only $20/lb, and flakes don't cause me issues with my 1500.

I think metering was the issue with it.

I know I played around with it YEARS ago but it went no where.

I printed the G&A article about a year ago, so sorry for the dead link. When metering powder, things get funky when you start talking about a few grains, check, verify and recheck because these little devils have little margin for error.

I've used unique with 40 gr Normandy VMAX loads. Nothing heavier though.

It was 4.4 grains unique, cci400, 1.580" col with Hornsby 40 grain vmax. I have to find the chrony info but it was on the lower end from recollection.

I'm trying to work a load with w231 cause I have a ton.m started 3.3 grains and it cycled my ps90 but not my pistol--odd. I'm going to try 3.6 and chronograph it.

With regards to unique I made a note about shooting another set to check the accuracy.

W231 is not going to work or be safe.

I know it's super fast burning and won't contjnue with it. I'm probably going to just stick with AA7. I used N340 with pretty good results.

Was perusing the archive looking for powder information that I kind of recall & found this about Unique: http://www.fivesevenforum.com/archive/i ... -2007.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe it will help someone?

Don't use Unique, save it for something normal like 45ACP.
I picked up AA7 and AA9 and some magnum small rifle primers for loading 5.7x28.
I have not loaded any 5.7 in several years and if I remember correctly I think I stuck with AA9 and non magnum primers because that filled the cases most of the way, removing the possibility of a double charge and it made a nice yellow muzzle flash about the size of a soft ball.

Right now alot of powders aren't accessible by people. So alternates are always good. I can't get my hands on true blue "thee" powder for 5.7... but I have had to learn to use other powders and has made me a better reloader.

Agreed, Shop S Mart. The more alternatives we have, the more we can shoot. I have all "the" powders, but I have one or less lbs of them. I have 6 lbs of Unique, and I'm not trying to burn barns, so why not.

I personally favor longshot more than true blue at least for my hot loads!!! It is loud but in a self defense situation I really could care less about sound. The louder the better to scare off the bad guys.

Not good for 55 gn bullet, didn't cycle my 57 consistently and at 5gn it showed high pressure in the primers. Going to try bullseye, found a 3.5 gn load with 55 gn bullet. Won't know til spring.lol
