RCBS die and lacquer removal

Post by zer0t » 17 Mar 2013, 04:21

I've been lubricating the brass quite liberally but a few of them I can see the lacquer scratching off on the lower quarter, one side of the case.

I'm using an rcbs die and lee lube. I ordered imperial wax to see if it helps. Thoughts?

If it is just on one side, that usually indicates that your shell isn't centered properly when you raise it into the die. What shell holder are you using? Have you cleaned out the groove on the shell holder?

I'm using a lee 15 which I believe is for a .25 ACP. I was thinking of grinding it out a bit because a lot of cases are a tough fit. Is there a better shell holder?

That may be your problem, I've heard of people successfully modifying theirs to fit the 5.7 but I have no idea as to how much they removed from where. RCBS makes one specifically for the 5.7, #45

Maybe I'll just try to find one of those.

You can order them direct from RCBS (https://shop.rcbs.com/WebConnect/MainSe ... te=C10J092" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), since no one seems to have them in stock. But, they don't list whether something is in stock there, and the few times I've done that when nobody else had an item in stock, it didn't arrive until everyone else was restocked first :wall:

I was able to get it at Natchez for 6.95, a bit pricey for a shell holder but I don't want to wreck the brass.

Had similar issue with RCBS peeling away the lacquer coating. Lube was the issue here. Switched to UNIQUE by Hornady for lube and the issue was resolved.

For a few bucks I'll try the hornady lube too. Thanks

GONRA suggests trying STP Oil Treatment (auto parts stores) or better yet,
Tri-Flow Synthetic Grease (bike shops) for REALLY good sizing lubes.

Have run into the same issue using new Redding dies. Have tried Hornady Case Lube (spray), Imperial Lube (grease tin), and Imperial Dry Lube (Graphite type), to no avail. I'm attaching a few photos of what I'm experiencing, but the bottom line is that the Lacquer is getting pushed down off the casing, leaving a small ring of lacquer and brass that simply flakes off.

2 questions: is this most likely a die issue or a lube issue? Are the cases that I decapped and sized now structurally compromised?

Try UNIQUE by Hornady. Have found best success with it. But others probably have found best success with other lubes. LOL

RCBS dies, RCBS shell holder #45 and Hornady One Shot lube have worked well for me. No problems with damage to coating.

I'll have the Flitz out today to see if I get the die useable. As for the brass with the striped lacquer, what's the consensus: safe or unsafe..?

Polish your dies like Panzermk2 said or switch to Lee dies if you can find them. Trash the brass, its no good, you need the laquer.
