Here is the link for the EA VIRGIN UNPRIMED BRASS FOR THE 5.7X28MM.
A nearly 2 1/2 year project that Jay has been working on is becoming a reality.

I'm gonna try these with my usual loads and get back to you on how they shoot. I'm also gonna reload them at least 3 times to see how they hold up as they get shot. At least on my AR57, the factory brass develops extractor marks no matter how cold I load them. I guess it's just soft or the AR57 extractor is just harsh. Hopefully EA brass shows them how it's done.

EA, how much load reduction do you suggest with the change in case volume?

At least 35%, on a side note the shoulder hardly moves at all.

Please keep this in mind.

In the past the shoulder movement was so great it caused the cartridge to be less efficient since energy was wasted moving the shoulder, causing case capacity to increase before the bullet left the barrel and not on the bullet.

The shoulder hardly moves at all on my brass increasing the rounds efficiency.

Again do not look for the shoulder movement of the past. This also means that while YES the brass is still coated the neck and should area is worked MUCH less allowing for many reloads of the brass, of course due to liability issues I can't say how many times since I have no control over the what the hand loader has done to the stress the case in prior loadings.

On a side note yes the price will come down, all the tooling and press investments have to be paid for.

Once this has been done the prices will drop to that of .223

It will never be as cheap as other straight walled pistol cartridges since it needs many more forming strikes, same as .223, so that has to be taken into account for time labor, tool heads and tool wear.

I would compare Jay's brass pricing to that of 300 blackout's history. Rough start out, then when got adopted more and used more, prices came down. Also as industry took it up, it became more plentiful. There is another aspect that buffman pointed. Instead of other companies buying ammo to pull and reload, if they use EA brass... That frees up stock of "factory ammo" and becoming more plentiful. The monicker "factory ammo" is also going to change in a few years depending on how this turns out.

^ DAS already has stated they will give a credit, if the new brass is supplied. Less work for them in regards to pulling ammo, storing components pulled from that, etc.

Jay,

How will the new case capacity affect velocity with powders available to the handloader? I imagine that your proprietary powders will be more efficient.

At this point, can your share what your testing shows? I look forward to continued developments.

I can't share or provide load data.

Brass is being made available to guys like Grant, reloading forum Mod, to start working up loads.

This is still 5.7 and all the same powders work best for as have always just less powder.

So what your saying is that when it is SAAMIed that you can publish some loads? More like conservative loads that a reloading manual would have?

SAAMI means there are published and recognized specs to be used in other loading manuals.

I still won't publish load data, liability insurance to do so is just to hi.

Getting SAAMI certified is not free and cost large amounts of money ion the form of submitting technical drawings and test data.

Doubt if any of us can even imagine the “blood, sweat and tears” involved in EA’s brass development.
Congratulations!

Kiran04 sez: “I’m gonna try these with my usual loads and get back to you on how they shoot.”
KABOOM!!
GONRA bets EA will include a “reduced case capacity brass warning” note with brass shipments.

EA Virgin Coated UNPRIMED Brass (EA 07) Case Capacity is only 9.5 grains of water,
whilst FN Factory Case Capacity is 12.1 grains of water.
Initial powder volume stuff is REALLY IMPORTANT fellas!
Joe Reloader better treat this as a NEW CARTRIDGE when thinking of powder charges.

Plan to reserve my EA 07 brass for developing subsonic loads.
Just have to be sure the bullet exits the barrel.

As with any 5.7x28FN reloading subject, stay tuned on this web site for thrilling
“+P+ Red Blooded American Handloader” handoads and stories…..

Back to finish developing a wimpy -P- load for my 9mm 1910 Glisenti auto pistol,
then get to the new brass when it arrives…..

Very tricky, with the reduced capacity this case wants to push the bullets fast.

This morning GONRA fired 3 rounds with new 5.7X28 EA 07 brass in a 5.7x28mm FN Five-seveN® 20 shot pistol..
(Just some cautious high spot tests with this thicker case wall, smaller powder capacity brass.)

55 grain .224 inch diameter FMJBT military M193 bullet with cannelure
1.574 inch cartridge overall length WSR primers
“Modern” (not my 50 year old can) Bullseye powder

3.1 grains powder - No shoulder movement.
3.2 grains powder - See tiny swelling at neck shoulder junction only.
3.3 grains powder – Customary shoulder movement.

These shot Just Fine, perfect functioning.
Ejection several feet at 2 o’clock – (unclear how much case bounced off outdoor range “roof”.)
Normal primer appearance, no cratering or other bad news of any kind.
Absolutely no keyholing at 9 yards.

Anyway, off to a great start for me!

Thanks Gonra. It would be interesting to compare old loads to the new loads on a fps basis. Like 1000 grains of XXX @ 100fps to 730 grains of YYY @ 100fps. See what kind of case deformation, primer, etc. Going to be confusion regardless in the future between loads of FN vs EA brass if people don't put that info down. Next few years going to be interesting.

GONRA, did you trim yours down to reloading length? Mine are just a hair long, in the 1.137-1.134 range. They are also demonstrably narrower than the factory brass by around .003". The factory measured in the .312-.3135" range while EA brass is .309. Every single one of them was exactly .309, I might add. No variation. All measurements were taken from the base of shell casing, just before the head. I will try them at 65% of my normal load, which would be 4 grains of 3N38 on a 40 grain Nosler ballistic tip. I may try up to 4.3 as well. Let me know when you have chrono readings. I'm interested to see your velocity in EA brass vs. factory.

GONRA just loaded em up. Didn't measure anything - yet.
(Using FN brass, my SMALL BASE RCBS dies resized exactly to Factory Sample cartridge diameter specs.
Remember, use a MICROMETER for diameters, electronic caliper is OK for LENGTHS.
So, will have to see wot happens with this brass.....)

Hava LabRadar Doppler Chronograph, but am still climbing the learnng curve
and don't wanna screw with it on a busy range -
local club range is Really Crowded these days.

Will be quite a while before I have more data.
Am sure extensive / really good data you can trust will be posted by the usual experts on this web site....

Not sure wot the shell holder issue is, but RCBS #45 verked Just Fine for GONRA's EA 07 brass priming and loading.

Traditional FN brass FIRED MT's weigh nominal 60 grains.
New EA 07 brass FIRED MT's weigh nominal 75 grains.
(Remember, these weights include the fired Boxer primer.)
Advanced theoretical thinkers out there can figgerout how to best use this for sorting fired cases,
especially the piles of 5.7x28mm FN brass littering most ranges.

Talked to them live.

RCBS refuses to sell the parts needed to use their old style plates and allow customers to swap back and forth as needed.

They stated if your brass is slipping in their new universal holder to call them.

Brass arrived fine. Looks good with the EA stamp.

Image

Brass after firing. Most have very little shoulder movement. 2 have normal shoulder movement.

Image

2 with normal shoulder movement.

Image

Rest without.

Image

Primers look normal.

I had to ditch my Lee resizing die. I tried it on one virgin case and it cracked the neck. Went to lyman and it worked fine.

It's where the shoulder was pushed forward, but it did not expand to the diameter of the rest of the cartridge, so there are almost two separate shoulders there. That's what the ring is.
