Timeline of the 5.7x28mm
Courtesy of DmL5
Well, this is the place to come for dates from the life of the 5.7x28mm. I'm still missing several dates, such as the date for the Five-seveN Tactical being introduced. Input is welcome!
Past to Present
1986
--FN begins work on what is to become their P90 PDW. Initial development of the companion 5.7x28mm cartridge starts with the loading of the polymer core SS90 projectile in various commercial cartridges such as the .22 Hornet and the .30 Carbine. The latter is reportedly used unmodified with sabots and in a necked-down format.
1987
--First firing prototypes of the FN P90 are tested.
1988
1989
--FN's Rene Predazzer files a US patent application for the design of the P90's horizontally-mounted magazine.
--NATO publishes document D/296, outlining a new requirement for a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW).
--FN's Jean-Paul Denis and Marc Neuforge file a US patent application for the projectile design used in the 5.7x28mm SS90 cartridge.
1990
--GIAT purchases FN. With this, GIAT quietly shelves their 5.7x22mm PDW project in favor of the FN 5.7x28mm project.
--FN's Rene Predazzer receives US Patent #4,905,394 titled "Top Mounted Longitudinal Magazine."
--FN's Jean-Paul Denis and Marc Neuforge receive US Patent #5,012,743 titled "High-Performance Projectile."
--FN P90 submachine gun is introduced and becomes the first weapon to meet NATO PDW requirements.
--SS90 23 grain plastic-core cartridge is introduced.
1991
--P90 sees first operational use in Operation Desert Storm.
1992
1993
--FN's Canio Fortunato files a US patent application for a magazine design capable of feeding the long 5.7x28mm SS90 cartridge but narrow enough front to back to allow for a managable grip frame.
--FN's Jean-Louis Gathoye files a US patent application for a delayed blowback system, intended for a pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm.
1994
--The 31 grain steel/aluminum SS190 is introduced and replaces the plastic-core SS90. The P90 magazine is also redesigned to accomodate the new cartridge.
1995
--FN's Canio Fortunato receives US Patent #5,388,360 titled "Loader with Tilting Cartridges for Pistol or Machine Pistol."
--FN officially announces the development of the 5.7x28mm Five-seveN pistol.
1996
--FN publicly unveils its 5.7x28mm Five-seveN pistol prototype.
1997
--Japanese Embassy raid in Lima, Peru (Chavin de Huantar) becomes the first lethal engagement with the 5.7x28mm.
1998
--The 5.7x28mm FiveseveN pistol is introduced, becoming the first pistol to meet NATO PDW requirements.
1999
--Houston, TX PD becomes the first US police department to adopt the P90.
--P90 Triple Rail variant is introduced.
2000
--Cyprus National Guard becomes the first international user of the FiveseveN, purchasing 250 pistols.
2001
--NATO's Land Group 3 commissions France's Etablissement Technique de Bourges (ETBS) to conduct a comparative evaluation of the FN 5.7x28mm and HK 4.6x30mm PDW cartridges. The testing continues through 2002.
2002
--SS192 cartridge is introduced and replaces the T194. The two cartridges are very similar in behavior and appearance.
--The USMC's Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) announces its intent to purchase twelve each of FN's P90 and HK's 4.6x30mm MP7 for evaluation purposes.
--NATO's Conference of National Armament Directors (CNAD) is forced to cancel the scheduled selection of a PDW cartridge for NATO standardization. Due to a lack of consensus on how to evaluate the ETBS report and questions regarding ETBS' conduct of the trials, the NATO Army Armaments Group (NAAG) is forced to form a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) to independently examine the report and conduct further testing as necessary.
2003
--The NAAG's QRT hears formal presentations from FN and HK regarding ETBS' report, which evaluated their PDW cartridges. This leads to the commissioning of Switzerland's Defence Procurement Agency in Thun to conduct further trials of the cartridges.
--P90 Tactical variant is introduced. Major differences from the TR variant include a longer top rail, extended muzzle, and emergency iron sights.
--With the results of the Swiss testing, the NAAG's QRT recommends NATO standardization of the FN 5.7x28mm cartridge. Predictably, the German delegation protests the recommendation, citing issues with the Swiss trials and the QRT report.
--P90 USG variant introduced and adopted by the US Secret Service.
2004
--FiveseveN IOM variant is introduced. Major differences from the Tactical variant include the addition of an M1913 picatinny accessory rail, magazine disconnect, and adjustable sights.
--IMI announces that it is in the process of designing a competitor to the FN P90, after the Belgian government embargoes the Israeli Shin Bet security service's orders for the P90. Certain features of the weapon will be taken directly from the P90, such as its translucent, horizontally mounted magazine.
2005
--FiveseveN Forum established.
--FiveseveN USG variant is introduced. Major differences from the IOM variant include squared trigger guard, checkered front and back grip texture, and reversible magazine release.
--5.7x28mm SS192 JHP is discontinued, to eventually be replaced with an identical, but lead-free, cartridge.
--5.7x28mm SS196SR V-MAX sporting cartridge is introduced. The new cartridge pushes a 40 grain V-MAX bullet at speeds slower than the discontinued SS192.
--5.7x28mm SS195LF lead free cartridge is introduced to replace the SS192. This round gives ballistic performance identical to the SS192, the only difference being a lead free primer in the latter round.
--Fiocchi Ammunition is contracted to produce 5.7x28mm ammunition for FN after months of poor ammo availability and prices.
--Fiocchi Ammunition begins producing 5.7x28mm ammunition (SS196SR and SS197SR) in the USA, and SS195LF continues to be produced in Belgium.
2006
--5.7x28mm SS197SR V-MAX cartridge is introduced, using the same 40 grain V-MAX projectile as the SS196SR, yet at increased velocity. It uses a blue plastic tip to distinguish it from the red-tipped SS196SR.
--PS90 carbine introduced to the civilian market. The PS90 was made available in OD green (or black, eventually) with 16-inch barrel, giving an increase in velocity over the standard P90.
--Black PS90 carbine begins shipping on the civilian market.
--CMMG 10-round magazine extention is introduced for the Five-seveN pistol giving it a 30-round capacity.

--FN to introduce a PBR-style bolt rifle in 5.7x28mm caliber.
--Wolf Ammo to produce 5.7x28 ammunition.
2007
--Halo Manufacturing to introduce P90-esque P12 shotgun.
2008
--SS198LF round introduced for LE/MIL.
--OD and Flat Dark Earth color FsN's introduced.
2009

David first published that post in 2006 or so. At that point in time, Wolf did look like a promising alternate source. It didn't pan out.

Re: Timeline of the 5.7x28mm
I have one of the first Prototype rounds developed. I also have one of the original brochures for the ps90 that was given to the Saudi as they were the first buyers of the weapons system. Pretty cool
Re: Timeline of the 5.7x28mm
Excellent info. Thanks.
Re: Timeline of the 5.7x28mm
Bones, if you would like to move or are willing to part with anything 5.7, I would be interested. Or if you know someone that I may reach out to that might have rare ammo, 5.7 pistols, documentation or advertisements, again I would appreciate them contacting me at 305-218-0300. I am trying to work hard on my collection, some immediate things I need are: SS90, SB193, T194, dummy or some blanks. Also missing a few from Elite, I am also need another DAO, and Tacticle preferably upshot. Finally did I.......say iwould be open to anything 5.7 that is available and rare, Cash in hand.
