SS195 Compared to SS197?

Post by xxxsrcxx » 23 Jun 2014, 17:55

Almost all of the ads that I see are for the SS197 ammo. Is the SS195 ammo older? Do they still sell it? I bought a 2000 round case of SS195 L.F. during the ammo scare and I haven't shot a single round of it because I have always been buying single boxes mostly of SS197 to shoot at the range.

Is there a good place to sell a whole case of ammo privately since it seems I don't need the old stuff anymore? I would imagine you can't just list it on craigslist or ebay right? Any idea what it's worth now-a-days? I honestly have no clue what I paid for it, probably too much since you couldn't find a single box anywhere at the time.

Thanks for the help

Yes, they still sell it.
Use auction sites like gunbroker, gunauction, gunsamerica .coms but craigslist would also probably work.

You can sell at those places and check what the ammo is going for. You might only find it as individual boxes so just multiply the avg going price by how many boxes you have & there's your asking price.

SS195 is really hard to find now.

You're better off looking for SS198. It's basically the same thing with a little bit more velocity.

Yeah not so much. Some batches of 198 have a hard time breaking 75 faster.

Most all 198 I've tested is just shy over 2100 fps from the FSN. The 195 I've chrono'd has been 2000fps.

I can't find anyone selling a whole case of ss195 anywhere to gauge the pricing. I have no idea what to ask, or what is a fair price. I just want to sell it instead of letting it sit in a gun safe. Is the rarity mean no one wants it or does it mean its valuable because no one has any for sale?

Then you didn't actually look.
http://www.gunbroker.com/Ammunition/BI. ... rds=5.7x28" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Updated: 6/28/2014 2:45:08 AM EST (time stamp from gunbroker page)

The first page on gunbroker has 3 ads for SS195 2000rd cases - $900,$1000,$1300
There is also another ad for 2400 rd lot for $1100 which works out to $916.67 for 2000rd.

Avg price for 2000rd case: $(900+917+1000+1300)/4 = $1029.25
Put it on there for $1000 starting price & see if they'll bid it up.

The "rarity" may just mean people are hording it. There is debate about the shelf life idea but the lighter bullet & higher velocity traits of that round are appealing to some. Especially if one pulls down & reloads with a higher charge.
Personally, I prefer the 197 for factory ammo but I wouldn't mind getting some of the light bullets to load with my own recipe.

SS195 vs 197

Post by Dante » 05 Dec 2015, 09:03

Is the 195LF much better than 197 for defense?
If I practice with 197, will the 195 have the same point of impact at under 15
Yards?

I know Nic and he has posted about knowing for a fact the performance of the 5.7 in the past but did not reveal the details.

^^ hard to say. Shot placement with any round is key. My take away from it, is that SS197SR inside his body still destroyed quite a bit of stuff. Had that been a "glorified" 22 magnum, would the tissue destruction been the same?
