New Owner! Questions about Ammo
New Owner! Questions about Ammo
Hi all, I just bought my first Five Seven last Sunday at a gun show. Paid $1,380, pretty steep but with all the panic I wanted to go ahead and get one of guns that are on my "must own" list.
Anyway the gun is in transit to my FFL and I should have it in the next day or two, I'll be sure to post pics soon. I have questions about the ammo and what I should pay for it. I have a local store that actually has boxes of this stuff, the FN SS197SR blue boxes and American Eagle FMJ. They're charging $38 for the FN and $28 for the AE. I went ahead and got one of each box, should I go ahead and clear the shelf or would it normally be cheaper elsewhere if available? Those prices actually didn't seem bad compared to GB haha...

I'd wait, but in this climate the $28/box AE isn't bad. I wouldn't pay $40/box for 197...

Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
Grab the AE! While you can.
Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
Some ammo is better than no ammo. I have found 197 at 22.00 and have paid as high as 36.00. As the supply cycles roll along I have stocked up in the low times. If you can afford to shoot it at those prices I say buy some more. A lot of us have been looking at empty shelves for some time now. You could always start loading too. Personal decision between you and your wallet. I say buy some and enjoy shooting your new gun.

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fix stupid - it's just illegal.

Hello everyone, first time posting here. I am sure this question has been asked maybe a million times but here goes: I have the Five-seven MKII, am I only restricted to use ammo ss197sr and ae5728a ? I see a lot of different brands and series, please advise and thanks in advance.

Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
You can use any FNH ammo you can get your hands on (192,195,197,198,etc.). AE is ok too, in fact I believe the AE is made by the same people just packaged differently.
The are the only FACTORY rounds I know of but there are other ammunition makers out there. Elite Ammunition for instance, they specialize in 5.7x28mm ammo & have a solid reputation. I've seen other manufacturers on gunbroker & such but you need to do some research on if the seller & manufacturer have a reputation for a good product. If not, it shouldn't be hard to find complaints on line.

Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
I'd never pay $40 for ss197 or $28 for AE. Look online for ammo search engines the bring up up the cheapest price. I personally use WikiArms.
Palmetto has 197 for 16.99 and AE for 15.99 a box. I always buy online in bulk or buy some of Elite Ammunition's slowly adding to my reserves.

The $40 for 197, yeah that's old.

Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
FN SS197 & Federal American Eagle are both manufactured by Fiocchi in Ozark, MO using brass supplied by FN, all other FN branded ammunition is manufactured in Belgium by FN with MUCH TIGHTER QA/QC than Fiocchi.Rapier1772 wrote:You can use any FNH ammo you can get your hands on (192,195,197,198,etc.). The brass used by Fiocchi is manufactured here by them.

Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
Thanks so much everyone for your input. I originally asked that question because I remember when I bought the gun 2 years ago, there was a letter from FNH specifying which ammo to use. Thanks again

Order it if local stores are too high. There are an array of choices.

If ordering, make sure you account for shipping/handling/hazmat fees.

Palmetto State Armory is the best kept 5.7 ammo secret.
Re: New Owner! Questions about Ammo
New owner and forum member here. Just popped into this thread but Natchez is cheaper on the price of their ammo before shipping. Anyway, I would like to ask what a good price is for a box of SS198LF (red box)? I got some the other day but didn't know what the street value was if you can find it.
