Factory Crimp and Cannelure on L191

Post by Buffman » 05 Feb 2013, 21:12

I finally scored some L191 for testing. I always do a water jug and or clay test. Body armor test IMO with this will be redudant because it's same contruction wise as SS190.

Now I noticed something different. These L191's have a cannelure on them. I've read the cannelure helps the jacket fragment and or seperate? Or was this more of an identifying mark when the paint wore off? If the cannelure was useful why was it not brought over to SS190, or the 28gr JHP?

This is 99 headstamp. I have 2000 that don't have the cannelure, but 02 do.

Also noticed this factory neck crimp... Only on the 99s, not 2000, or 2002:

To add to your data, I have seen 00 and 02 that have cannelure. Both didn't have crimping.

That's not a factory crimp.

Possible these were loaded by Winchester or some factory other than Fiochhi, FNH? The 9 I have from 98/99 have that very consistent crimp on it.

The other lot the guy is selling has the same neck crimp

That looks like a modified Lee crimp. No factory ammo would have that style crimp. I think I have some L191 around here buried in a box. I will try to find it and check it out.

FD, thanks. That gives good indication why to use cannelures and crimping, but the cannelure on these rounds is well above the crimp.

Someone else noted on FN forum that their early 2000 SS190 had a cannelure..
