Advanced Polymer cased ammunition

Post by NLVMike » 12 Oct 2012, 09:50

I was browsing http://www.fbo.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; again (bad habit) to see what our government is buying these days. I found this one kind of interesting. The Navy has an RFP out for polymer cased ammunition, in .223, 7.62, 300 win mag and 338 Lapua. It states that the Navy is looking for weight reduction, so they can carry more ammo. It is a small order, with a minimum guarantee of $3,500,000 for the first order. I'm guessing that stuff won't be reloadable.

RFP answers to NSWC, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, IN. And sorry, I was wrong on the value. Got it confused with another crazy order. This one has a max value of $9,900,000. I suppose in theory, if the case was just to hold the propellant, and the entire explosion was contained by the chamber, polymer would work. Heck, paper would work.

I believe it. And there is nothing like a $10MM gov't contract to help leapfrog that technology along.

We tried this with polymer .50 cal cartridge cases. I still have one sitting here in my office. The problem is they can't hold up to the test environments we run all our ammo through. I'm sure someone has come up with a mix that will, but then it becomes a cost factor. There is a huge push coming out of SOCOM and the USMC to lower the weight of everything, so it wouldn't suprise me at all if we start seeing a big push again in this direction. Another area that we have looked at in the past was plastic disentigrating links, once again with the idea of weight reduction. It will be interesting to see what comes of this.
