Other 5.7x28mm System Resources on (and off) the Web

Post by Esteves » 20 Aug 2008, 20:29

[ UPDATES IN PROGRESS 06/16/2012 ]

Sometimes it's difficult to know where to start when one is entering the learning curve. My intent with this thread is to provide a place to document some of the more useful websites (and other resources) out there that contain significant information related to the P90/Five-seveN/5.x7x28mm and/or produce products for this weapon system.

All of this information is FYI. Inclusion of a vendor or a product reference here does not constitute endorsement. Buyer beware. Use at your own risk. Make your own decisions. Don't blame me or anyone else for your decisions.

Exclusion doesn't necessarily mean bad things, It could mean that I didn't know about them, or I forgot to update this thread. Send me a PM or post in this thread and I'll make an update.

OFFICIAL STUFF

FNH USA's website has quite a bit of information. Most of it is marketing fluff, but there are some gems.

The main FN Herstal site has some slightly different information.

Likewise for the Herstal Group's site.

FN Manufacturing has basic information on many of the US-made products and services.

FNH USA's service center and parts department: 1-800-635-1321 (08:00-16:00 Central Time)
If you would like to:
* Place an order, or have questions concerning an order or have, Technical firearms issues please call +1 703 288 1292 x122
* Status of your firearm press 3
* Parts information, press 4
* Repeat instructions, press 9
Ring Sights manufacturers the HC-14-62 (white reticule) and MC-10-80 (black reticule) sight used on the P90 and PS90. They're the likely manufacturer of the relatively new sight with green reticule lit by fiber optics.

Laserex produced/produces the integral laser used in the P90. DenTrinity is one of the few sources for 5mW versions of the Laserex unit.

Laser Devices, Inc. produced (or at least prototyped) the lasers and lights that are seen in many of the early promotional photographs of the Five-seveN. There are many more options available these days.

Armorer's Manuals (including "exploded" diagrams) for the Five-seveN and P90/PS90 are available, but only if you take the Armorer's class from FN. Note that "Courses are specifically designed for the law enforcement armorer and are not open to the general public." NeoArms has produced aftermarket isometric diagrams of the PS90 and P90, but had some serious financial and personal difficulties [ See this thread for Tyler's last hurrah (and say thanks!) http://www.fivesevenforum.com/viewtopic ... 16&t=12816" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ]

UNOFFICIAL STUFF

The FiveseveNForum is (of course) a great place to chat/discuss/rumor-monger all things 5.7x28mm.
There is a search function that is very helpful for finding topics that have ALREADY BEEN COVERED. SOMETIMES REPEATEDLY. AGAIN and AGAIN.
The Forum Wiki has some great content in it also. Contributors are vetted and known.
A fair amount of content from "before the crash" is available in the Forum Archive

D3lf has a great sharesite ( http://www.globalspot.net/p90/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

The Wikipedia has some very useful/organized entries [but beware of content that can be edited by anyone and double-check or triple-check anything that you find.]

SHHHH! (SUPPRESSORS)

Gemtech did and does produce suppressors for the P90, the Five-seveN, and the AR57. Besides their thread-on suppressors, their quick-mount (SP-90, G5, M4-96D, HVT, and QUICKSAND) suppressors can be used with the P90 or SBR PS90 or AR57 with the proper adapter.

AAC is another option. They have a FsN-specific can. Besides their thread-on suppressors, their M4-2000 suppressors can be used with the P90 or SBR PS90 or AR57 with the proper adapter.

AWC also has a FsN-specific can, but doesn't appear to market it very hard.

The SWR Spectre is also appealing, and has many excellent reviews.

Elite Iron advertises a version of their Echo specced for the FiveseveN.

HunterTown's Kestrel is rated for up to .22 Hornet.

Just about any suppressor for the 5.56x45mm will work well on the SBRed PS90, although excessive weight is a consideration. Suppressors for larger calibers (such as 7.62x61mm or 9x19mm can also be used, but with some loss of efficiency.)

.22LR and .22WMR suppressors are NOT generally recommended, as they are generally not designed for the much higher pressures of the 5.7x28mm cartridge. There are a few (and the number is growing) exceptions such as SilencerCo's stainless steel Sparrow, Liberty's Kodiak, and the stainless steel Mite from YHM, Costal Gun's Hornet, Bowers' USS. In many cases, there is a version/variant of the suppressor line that can be used with 5.7x28. If you go this route, MAKE SURE that the SPECIFIC suppressor that YOU ARE USING is appropriately rated.

Going the other way, many 9mm suppressors are rated for and will work with the 5.7x28mm. The DeGroat Nano is one example.

Tip: SB193 works well from the SBR PS90 (or from the P90 for that matter) but is faster than sound from the standard PS90 barrel and won't consistently cycle the action of every Five-seveN. Elite Ammunition produces tailored subsonic loads that are specific to each of the common barrel lengths, and yield excellent results.

Reality check: Silencers/Suppressors/Mufflers (by whatever name) do make most guns quieter. If you're expecting a "pht" as heard in the movies, you will be disappointed. Having said that, Elite Ammunition produces special cartridges for shooting pellets with a large rifle primer (no powder.) Using these with a can will yield a very satisfying "pht."

P90 RENTALS (or just try, 'cause you can never buy...)

SGC ( http://www.scottsdalegunclub.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) in Scottsdale, AZ. $65 + $30.00/25rds
American Shooters Supply ( http://www.americanshooters.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) in Las Vegas, NV.
GunSite ( http://www.gunsite.com/courses/specialty.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) Cost: $1850 Duration:2 Days

AFTERMARKET PARTS AND ACCESSORIES

Jarvis produces threaded barrels for the Five-seveN (thread protectors cost extra.)

EFK ( http://www.efkfiredragon.com/products.php?cat=1488" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) is also producing threaded barrels.

Tornado Tech ( http://www.tornado-technologies.com/services.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.tornado-technologies.com/ima ... _Seven.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) will thread your factory FsN barrel for less and the thread protector is included.

CMMG ( http://www.cmmginc.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produced 10.3" (SBR) replacement barrels for the P90/PS90 Available twist rates are the original 1 in 9" and a faster 1 in 7"
They also supplied replacement flash hiders in either the original or GemTech bi-lock styles.
There is also a 1/2" 28TPI adapter available, and they have said that they are working on obtaining the new FS2000 style flash hider.
They have also produced 10-round extensions and springs for the FsN magazine.
They had announced side rails and a modular tri-rail system.
Recently announced a .22LR conversion for the PS90/P90 ( http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b ... 4&t=516260" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Posted teaser pics of a prototype bottom-feeding AR conversion to 5.7x28
[CMMG appears to have made a business decision to abandon all things 5.7x28]

Magazine Parts ( http://www.magazineparts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) has absolutely blown any credibility they may have had. If you really want to know more, use google. This is an anti-endorsement so you'll know exactly who not to deal with.

Member MSW designed the MSW100 lowmount for mounting the ACOG as low as possible on the standard PS90. $25.00 which includes USPS Priority Mail delivery to the CONUS (yes, twenty-five dollars delivered.) Similar mounts exist, this is the original. email: MSW100@verizon.net for you order.

TDI Arms ( http://www.tdi-arms.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) now known as CAA ( http://www.commandarms.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) markets the TPR16 Side-by-Side Picatinny Rail System for the P90/PS90. Gunsmithing/drilling is required.

Tactical Innovations ( http://www.tacticalinc.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produces fake silencers threaded in 1/2x28 as well as the TAC16 .223 suppressor.

The Riddle of Steel ( http://www.trosusa.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produces 1/2" 28TPI muzzle nuts for the SBRed PS90 and adapters for the FiveseveN barrels.

MFI ( http://www.mfiap.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) offers a mounting system for its fake suppressors that will work with the stock PS90.

The full-size Hogue Handall (R) grip sleeve [also available in OD] works with the FsNs. ( http://www.getgrip.com/main/overview/handall.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

So do the large (model 1 or model 2) Pachmayr grip sleeves ( http://www.pachmayr.com/slip-on-grips.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

For the do-it-your-selfer: Skateboard grip-tape or stair-step grip-tape from a hardware store has been used successfully by some on the forum to enhance the FsN grip. Wide all-purpose rubber bands may also work.

Another option for changes to the grip is to use spray-on truck-bed liner. Be sure to experiment (and PRACTICE) on something that you don't care about first.

Bullet Forge ( http://www.bulletforge.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produces silver-plated and solid silver bullets, for all of you werewolf hunters. Keychain ornaments and jewelry can also be created by them.

P90/PS90-SBR Flash Hiders
Gemtech ( http://www.gem-tech.com/store/pc/5-56MM ... 15p119.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
AAC ( http://www.advanced-armament.com/produc ... 87#pid=702" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Vltor ( http://www.vltorstore.com/vc-p90/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
CMMG produced replicas of the original P90 flash hiders. These can sometimes be found.
The Riddle of Steel ( http://www.trousa.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produces thread adapters for the P90/PS90/FsN so that more commonly available devices can be attached.

FN has been rumored to have bolt guns in 5.7x28mm in the works for years now. Delayed multiple times, maybe we'll see them in late 2009 or 2010 or 2011 or 2012 2013.

Savage ( http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/25+LVT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) looks like they'll have at least two bolt guns in 5.7x28mm. [Savage appears to have had issues with the model 25 and this cartridge and no guns have been shipped.]

Excel Arms ( http://www.excelarms.com/newproducts.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) recently announced four new firearms in 5.7x28mm. We'll be watching these closely, so look for more info 1Q2011.

Rhineland Arms designed an AR-upper that accepts the P(S)90 magazines. Now marketed by http://www.57center.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ATI is rumored to have a similar AR-upper design, but this does not appear to have come to fruition.

CMMG is working on a more traditional AR-upper that feeds from the bottom. It's in the early stages of development, so more to come... [See above regarding CMMG abandoning all things 5.7x28]

Barrels have been produced for the Thompson/Center Contender. (See Coyote, MGM, and also by the T/C custom shop.)

Shilen Match Grade Barrels as well as bolts have been produced for the Remington 700 (See Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

MAGAZINES

There are now aftermarket PS90/P90 magazines being produced by several companies. Quality varies, but prices on FN magazines have dropped substantially in response.

Pro Mag ( http://www.promagindustries.com/SearchR ... asp?Cat=91" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) is now offering aftermarket magazines for the FiveseveN.

CMMG (mentioned elsewhere) also produced +10 round extenders for the FiveseveN

Several different manufacturers have produced conversion plates for 30 round PS90 magazines, to bring them up to full capacity. Any of them should work well enough, although some sellers seem to think that ABS is pricier than silver or gold. A hacksaw works as well.

AMMUNITION

Is currently produced in bulk by FN ( http://www.fnhusa.com/le/products/firearms/ammo.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) and Fiocci ( http://www.fiocchiusa.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

Elite Ammunition ( http://www.eliteammunition.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) has products that offer significant performance improvements over every comparable factory offering. They also offer products that the factory does not.

RELOADING

Dies are available from C-H, Hornady, Lee, Lyman, RCBS, and Redding.

Don Hume ( http://www.donhume.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produced several holsters for the FsN, When searching by weapon, select "Herstal 5.7" or "Herstal USG Model".

Fobus ( http://www.fobusholster.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produces light weight and high tech belt and paddle holsters for the FsN.

Galco Gunleather ( http://www.usgalco.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) has a few holsters for the USG. Mag carriers are also available.

Some have made from scratch or modified other "will fit" holsters. Take all possible caution (and assume any/all risks) with this approach, but it can be done.

CARBINE/PDW MAGAZINE POUCHES

Flecktarn ( http://www.flecktarn.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Blackhawk ( http://www.blackhawk.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Most/all Airsoft P90 magazine pouches will fit. You probably get what you pay for, though.

SLINGS

FN Factory Sling ( )
Blackhawk ( http://www.blackhawk.com/product_det...duct_id=2764&d=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Urban ERT ( http://www.uertslings.com/index1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

GUNSMITHING

Elite Ammunition ( http://www.eliteammunition.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) has some very nice combat sights.
Tooltech is another option: ( http://tooltechgunsight.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

Elite Ammunition ( http://www.eliteammunition.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) also offers a full accurizing work-over, including trigger job.

HDPS ( http://www.hdps.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) has a clean PS90 barrel removal process. They also perform ATFE compliant engraving, and will dye your stock.

Tornado Technologies ( http://www.tornado-technologies.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) also offers barrel shortening services.

Gemtech ( http://www.gem-tech.com/store/pc/viewco ... dpage=7#70" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) will also cut and thread a PS90 barrel

I've collected some gunsmithing tips and howtos on WikiHow ( http://www.wikihow.com/Gunsmith-the-FN-P90/PS90" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

GUNSMITHING TOOLS

For build-it-yourself types, reamers are available from Clymer ( http://www.clymertool.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

4D Reamer Rentals ( http://www.4-dproducts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) now stocks the 5.7x28mm reamer.

P90/PS90 barrel change requires some special tools.

Robert Burrows work is also appealing: http://www.rbgungraphics.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

PATENTS

P90 Magazine
What the P90 might have been...
AR57
CMMG's P90 .22LR Conversion

ADMINISTRIVIA

This is just a start. I'll try to keep this post reasonably up-to date as others PM me or post their own findings and recommendations. I'll say it again: None of the above should be construed as an endorsement for a particular product, or service, or vendor, or technique. Use your head, and check your facts.

DELETIA - Things get out of date. This is where they'll wind up.

Halo Manufacturing ( http://www.halomfg.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produced side rail sets, a tri-rail system, an "A" marked semi-auto safety-selector switch replacement, and was going to make butt stock extensions for the PS90. They also planned on producing a bridge-mount system for the Five-seveN if demand warrants it, and have hinted that fake suppressors will be made by them.

Monolith Arms ( http://www.monolith-arms.com/servlet/th ... Categories" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) was formed by former HaloMfg employees (and still has a good working relationship w/ Halo.) Current products include PS90/P90 buttstock extensions, the Halo Tri-Rail, and the REM "T3" reticule Enhancement Module.

C&S produces "Grip Bands" which should work ( http://www.candsweapons.com/noname5.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

Cooper ( http://www.cooperfirearms.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) was rumored to have a bolt-gun chambered in 5.7x28mm in the works.

Ironwood Designs ( http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) has had a P90-styled bullpup conversion in the works for the Ruger 10/22 for quite some time, but is not yet marketing it.

The rumor that Wolf ( http://www.wolfammo.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) would also produce bulk ammo never materialized.

Starline is rumored to be gearing up to produce virgin 5.7x28mm brass.

Esteves,

Great stuff, this was the kind of information that was lost from the old forum and you've really condensed it with this one post. You the man!

Thanks for the kudos, guys. :)

I thought that I'd removed reference to the blog before the crash. The version seen here was recovered from a 2006 cached copy. (Thanks, Lisa!)

I haven't kept the blog up to date, and it began getting cluttered with other stuff (some of which is personal), so I locked it away from public view.

If you're a frequent poster here, and you can see "the cage", and your posts generally benefit the community here, and you pass my personality filter - then PM me your email address and I'll consider inviting you to view the blog. Not to make a big deal of it, but how many people would you want reading your notes/journal?

Couple things I wanna let you know/I'm testing for the FiveseveN pistol:

Holsters:Any nylon holster made for a 4.5-5.0 LARGE automatic pistol will fit the 57,basic thing to keep in mind-if it'll fit a Glock 21 it'll fit a 57.

Mag pouches:this has been driving me a little bats, there has to be a mag pouch that fits this thing and doesn't cost an arm and a leg~also I kept staring at my 57 mag and thinking "dammit this bloody thing looks familiar" (size-wise) then it hit me! the mag is,I swear, almost the same size as a Desert Eagal mag! sooo I'm gonna hunt up some DE mag pouches to see if it fits if it does I'll report back.

The .50AE magazine pouches will probably work. Others have had success along those lines.

I did have a note about "will fit" holsters, but that was well before the selection improved. (The number of choices today is drastically better than it was four years ago.)

Thanks for the post... I had been looking for a belt carry holster that would fit my 5.7 with a tac light, & I see there are at least 3 suppliers right now... none of which I had found before going through the links you published...

Thanks Esteves.

I am pretty sure Lee is now offering the 5.7 x 28 dies over the phone. Components - (dieset parts) are listed in their 'products.txt' on their website.

The dieset is:
90603,V_LTD_2_DIE_5.7X28,41.98,1020,0
So little time, so much to do and hopefully while it's still legal...

Halo Manufacturing ( http://www.halomfg.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) produces side rail sets, a tri-rail system, an "A" marked semi-auto safety-selector switch replacement, and (soon) butt stock extensions for the PS90. They may (eventually) be producing a bridge-mount system for the Five-seveN if demand warrants it, and have hinted that fake suppressors will be made by them.

Bridge mount? What's a bridge mount (as I cringe...)?

It fits a MACE cannister or a 30rnd FsN mag well.

Superb post Estaves!!! Many thanks and Merry Christmas to you and yours as well as to everyone here.

I cannot successfully navigate the link you listed and cannot find Pachmayer slipons at the Lyman Products site, but I'm anxious to give one a test drive on my Five-Seven.

Is Pachmayr Grip Glove Slip-On Grip Sleeve Glock 17, 22 Rubber Black # 5164 the proper grip selection for the Five Seven?

If I recall correctly you will want the size 1 (smooth) or size 2 (grooved). http://www.pachmayr.com/slip-on-grips.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I know for certain that a Hogue Handall will fit as well. http://www.hoguestore.com/index.php?mai ... &cPath=114" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hope this helps.
