FiveseveN Mk II Failure to Extract

Post by Kiran04 » 17 Dec 2016, 23:03

Welp, my Mk II is giving me an occasional FTE, even with factory ammo. It only ever happens on the first round of a full magazine. Doesn't happen all the time. It's like the slide is cycling far enough back. The gun fires, but the spent casing is still in the chamber afterwards. Manually cycle to clear and away she goes again, but I can't have it failing this often. Thoughts?

.02

Bottom line: Slide is NOT cycling back far enough during failure.

___

Cold bore shot; the components/materials that need to be warmed up are not warm enough.

Spring is too heavy for the relatively weaker factory ammunition you are shooting.

Magazine spring's upward force on the rounds and the subsequent upward force from the next round is too high upon the bottom of the slide for the slide to cycle reliably with the relatively weaker load/imparted force/slide inertia vs the heavier-than-necessary-for-that-ammunition spring.

Recoil spring+additional input falls just barely outside the function window for the ammunition you are shooting.

All of the above factors, or select ones, combined, are causing your failure.

Bottom line: if you shoot hot-enough ammunition for all the detractors for the slide's inertia to be overcome/defeated, your gun will cycle more reliably.

It's really late and I have not had much sleep and I have been outdoors all day, so, take that into account in regards to my grammar and explanation process.

How many rounds are through your gun, and have you ever given the chamber a good scrub with a 9/40 cal brush with carb (not brake) cleaner?

I have scrubbed the chamber, but I haven't shot since then. Hopefully it turns out to be that easy. It's got mb 750-1000 rounds through it. The magazine is not hard to insert into the gun fully loaded, so I find the magazine spring pressure theory a bit far fetched. Normally when there's too much pressure there, the magazine is hella hard to lock in.

Have you used CC clean in your chamber?

Gun solvents and parts cleaners DO NOT remove Lacquer.

I have not. Can you recommend one to me? Should I use it in conjunction with the brush? Was is the risk to the chrome lining?

Carb cleaner won't hurt the chrome.

Just go to the local Walmart and get the walmart brand. Also don't soak the chamber in it, just use a q-tip and brush in the chamber. Getting carb cleaner into the area where the barrel threads into the holder will break up the thread locker they use.

Bingo, 9mm bore brush and patches.

Walyworld house brand. We get it by the case.
It's ok to soak the chamber just don't get it on the outside where the barrel shroud threads on. 9mm brush with a patch on it soaked in CC works great.

Also don't be surprised if you pull out a small section of case neck.

A similar problem happened with M16s. Chamber cleaning is key.

Also round count is not a marker to go off of.

I have seen FNH coated cases that are impervious to anything and cases that most of the coating comes off in the chamber the first time you shoot that round.

Scrubbed the chamber with a 9mm brush and some carb cleaner. No broken case neck pieces. I'll take it out this weekend and just fire rounds off the top with a full magazine 5-10 times, see if she chokes.

Alright, so I think I've found the problem and it's the reddot + mount. Looks like the slide is just a hair too heavy to fully actuate with a full mag + red dot. I took the mount and red dot off, put the old rear sight back on and away she went. I even had a full 20 round mag in with 1 in the pipe and she still fired and lobbed the spent casing into the next state. Welp, I was planning on taking the red dot off anyways. Jay, how does your HD recoil spring affect the guns reliability and cycling? I'm interested in getting one, but I want to make sure I don't just repeat the problem I had with the red dot. Also, do you recommend getting one for just the regular FiveSeveN barrel? Mine isn't threaded so no suppressor... yet. Will it still cycle reliably with SS197SR and SS195LF?

My HD spring will run just fine with all rounds. It will reduce the neck movement, increase FPS, and REDUCE to about 8 feet how fare the brass gets thrown.

Spring installed. I'll get her out to the range this week. I just used a set if needle nose pliers and got the nose in the space and expanded them. Simple. I also just locked the slide back with the gun to access the ring. Then I was just very careful when taking the gun apart.

Looks like everything is functioning fine on my FSN. Brass does drop a little closer, but still about 10 feet away. Not too bad.
