5.4 versus 6 versus 7 inch barrels

Post by SarasotaFN » 16 Aug 2016, 14:06

I am going to ask this here in case anyone else wanted to know. (Instead of PM to Jay) and others.

Is there much bullet performance difference between the different barrels? Faster muzzle velocity/more bullet energy and therefore flatter trajectory farther? Is the difference that great between each one? I spoke with EFK and they mentioned more target guys went for the 6 and 7 inch barrels, but had no info to back up any ballistic claims.

Also, on Elite Ammunitions website, if you look at the 7 inch barrel pics, I see what looks like some sort of muzzle break. Is that more to hide the barrel, or is it functional? How does it affect shooting the gun if so. Looks like on the 7 inch barrel that there would not be that much after the end of the barrel to help. Maybe it helps more on the 6 inch barrel? It looked cool and if the benefit of the 7 inch barrel was that great, I might go that route versus a suppressor.

Thanks to Jay and anyone else that chimes in!

Yes the 7 is for speed. You can get at least 60 to 80 fps per inch.

Do you mean the shroud? Talked about here? http://www.fivesevenforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16403" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe. The one I saw was all black on a grey/black camo gun. It was circular and seemed to have ports on the side and an irregular shaped front end. Not the extension piece that matches the gun that just makes it look like a longer regular gun. As far as ballistics go, are you saying that if I fired an ss197 round out of the factory barrel and then out of the 7 inch barrel, (since the 7 inch barrel is about 1.6 inches longer) that I should see 100-150 ft/sec total increase over the stock gun? Or more like 400-500ft/sec increase?

Is that on the 5.4 barrel? or the 6" barrel or 7" barrel? Thanks!

That pic is the 5.4. If it was the 6.0 there would be a larger gap between the adapter and the slide face.

Not to go to far off topic, but I have been toying around and started making and trying custom FSN thread protectors as I like to call them.

PREEEEETY cool that you've taken up so much initiative with this platform...

speaking of which... I think I've had the last set of rounds I'm supposed to test for you for about a year now...

I have to take my own initiative? hahaha....

What would be cool if you could make one that would thread onto a 7" barrel about a third of the way down so that it could still be a muzzle break but would also close the gap between the barrel and the slide. So one could use the 7inch barrel and have it look like just a longer flash compensator on the end.

That way you would have the cool factor as well as the longer barrel for speed increase! :D :clap:

I could easily do that. It just would require a 7" barrel to use as a template. With the different barrel lengths, the ones in the picture were designed for the shorter new style barrel to be flush with the slide.

Guess somebody better order up a long ass barrel and send it over to Grimm for prototyping. I like how those ones you made have a scaled down diameter more in tune with the FsN barrel.

let me pay for my trijicon rmr sight and streamlight tactical light and ammo from PSA and the mounting plate for said sight.....and I will try to be the 7" barrel donor at that time. Need the cash first.... :D :thumb:
